I think I would do the same, I used to sing, and during non singing moments, one feels awkward just standing in front of everyone. Some vocalists, use that time to headbang, and or look engaged in the music. But one can only act that way for so long, in prog where there will be 6 minutes of instrumentals mid song.. or you have songs of twenty minutes that are entirely instrumental... better to just dissappear, lmao.

Since Prog Metal is quite intricate, you should not call it a Nutshell. You should call it a PROG METAL PERFECTLY ENCLOSED IN A HOLLOW SPHERE WHOSE SURFACE AREA IS 4πR². EDIT: Did a small correction to the grammar. Earlier it was PROG METAL IN A PERFECTLY ENCLOSED and now it's PROG METAL PERFECTLY ENCLOSED IN A… . Thanks to Michael Bauer for pointing that out. Pff... true gigantic prog brains would know that such a statement would immediately out you as a plebian. Why mention the surface area as though that's not already implied directly by specifying the shape to be a perfect sphere? Given a sphere's equal curvature in every region via identical derivatives along all (linear) coordinate-axes no matter the orientation, an area of exactly 4πR² is strictly implied (for a fully-connected 3-space with a standard euclidean norm and its induced metric). ...Furthermore, it's not the hollow sphere that is enclosed - henceforth that statement doesn't even make grammatical sense. (Just my contribution to a little game of trying to out-snob each other in celebration of the spirit of prog 😄)

Man this is perfect! I hate when I’m really vibing with a prog song and it takes you to this really great place then gets derailed by all this show offy stuff, Yes and Dream Theater are prime examples. They’re both full of amazing high level musicians who obviously know music theory out the yin/yang, and can construct really unique, beautiful songs but then suddenly in the middle of a song it will sound like (at least to my small brain) they’re playing a completely different song! And these new sections can go on forever...
@yallgottaunderstand
@yallgottaunderstand 2 жыл бұрын
I would say Dream Theater is much more egregious with this than Yes (though I enjoy both). Yes, at least on those first five alblums, were very good at keeping a song cohesive while taking it to unexpected places. Even if a song took a 180, it felt like it definitely belonged in the broader context, at least to my ears. Only from Tales of Topographic Oceans did the wankiness and meandering start to show itself (only my opinion). Otherwise, if you just don't like any extended passages that deviate from the core structure of the song, I'm sorry to say, but that subversion of expectations is like the main appeal of progressive music

Well to be fair, prog rock, even from the 70's, has been mainly mostly appreciated by musicians. Musicians musicians if you will. Singers in a prog rock bands have always been an afterthought or actually played an instrument anyway, because they knew it to be so. But it DOES depend on what an individual considers to be prog rock I suppose, we all have our own thoughts on this. Take Focus for instance, or Yes or Tangerine Dream, better still more recent Ozric Tentacles, they are not same ilk as today's prog rockers e.g. Dream Theater.

Well, James LaBrie has been putting a lot of stress on his own voice and sounds awful live so it's understandable that the very long instrumental sections are there for him to drink lots of water and go to the bathroom before he has to sing again.

@@jxjxofficial in my opinion music has been so influential over the course of time for example look what Woodstock did for our country regarding the music to me it is important to be able to be able to think and process what you're listening to and let the music set your mind to where it should be instead of just listening to noise which is fine sometimes but there are many times especially nowadays in the world where people need to just sit down relax and think about where their lives are going and how they can make a difference for the better for themselves and others
