I think you nailed it (as you typically do). I would add the Strawbs’, Hero and Heroine to this list, as it balances pretentious tendencies with exquisite melodies. Who would think that a band that introduced Sandy Denny to the world would be making a “prog” album ten years later. Thank you for your great videos. Informative and enjoyable.

I love that “irritating” Moog synth part at the end of Lucky Man! It adds to this hauntingly beautiful song! I do have that KK A Perfect Pair and I dig it too! That overture tune from ELO was one of my favorite songs when I was in 6th grade Man I was a weird kid but it was the flip side to Evil Woman on the 45. First Psych/Prog record I ever owned was that Moody Blues record Days of Future Passed and I can still spin it regularly today and enjoy the hell out of it! Maybe some not UK/US bands/albums?! I'd pick Italian Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Premiata Forneria Marconi and maybe Museo Rozenbach. Flamborough Head from the Netherlands, another choice not to mention Chilean Congreso that mixes "progg" with frigging il-condor-pasa-flutes and while in S America, Argentinan Crucis. And Marillion from UK ( love the "new" Marillion) and maybe Arena and a MUST - Renaissance!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent video, Mazzy. I am a long time prog fan, and I have most of the albums you showcased in my collection. I actually listened to the debut Yes and ELP albums last month. I do have a soft spot for them! I mean, once in a while I have to hear about the Three Fates (Clotho, Lachesis and don't forget Atropos)!! Now I can enjoy some Phil Collins-based Genesis (Duke, Trick of the Tail) - those are still prog-like. Invisible Touch, not so much... Yes, Procol Harum is excellent, especially Grand Hotel. My wife bought me an excellent box set of theirs a few Christmases ago - "Still There'll be More, An Anthology 1967-2017". If you don't know that one, check it out. Listened to some Chick Corea last week, and Return to Forever (album and band), though fusion, is kind of prog to me. So is a lot of Pat Metheny music. Music often played on the long-term NPR Radio program "Hearts of Space" bridges into the prog spectrum very easily. Though I didn't lose my virginity to "Echoes" (and did it really take 23 whole minutes to do so??), I do recall making out (in a car) with my girlfriend (now wife) to the extent of Echoes maybe back around 1984. Amazing some radio station even then played the whole piece!

There is a place in any 70-80s record collection for Prog Rock. Though I'm not heavy on Yes. Before I had 'Lucky Man', I had Procol Harum Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. You gotta remember that we were listening to it a year or so after Concert for Bangladesh (is the Phil Spector production on Wah-Wah prog?). Procol Harum Live still holds up. We had a local band, called itself Tarsus, that played our high school gym twice (I brought them back). They did an amazing rendition of Lucky Man. And seeing them work the synthesizers taught me everything I needed to know to listen to Prog. ELO is prog. Of course it is. A New World Record/Out of the Blue were out in time for my senior years in high school. 'The Beatles Fading on Hey Jude' validated the whole idea of still listening to the Fab Four back catalogue. Days of Future Past-an amazing record-more or less set the stage for the whole thing. I also really like their double album, This Is The Moody Blues (1974). It cuts out the crap and delivers the good songs. It's a 'flipper' album. My copy is on very heavy vinyl. You'll listen to 3 sides for sure. Calling Occupants-yup! (brilliant choice). There are so many songs that Karen Carpenter could have lent her pipes to that just weren't to be. She could have done Badfinger, Delaney & Bonnie, and any/many of these prog hits. I can imagine her singing 'Year of the Cat'. Al Stewart, Supertramp, Alan Parsons Project, Roxy Music and Gerry Rafferty's City to City (I'd even throw Steeler's Wheel in there)-all prog-along with Night at the Opera. Man, I couldn't believe that record when I heard it. Kate Bush, sure. But I rather put her in a category that maybe holds David Bowie's Low. Spacey as hell atmospheric, hypnotic. Maybe with Peter Gabriel, Genesis, etc., as 'post-prog'. They just had too much control over the the production. Prog is edgier than that. Sometimes a good prog track will make you think about where they were setting up the mics. If you hate prog, you gotta lighten up a notch. There are some wonderful orchestral stuff coming out of the speakers recorded just at the moment every body had 16 tracks, but maybe not 126. Dark Side - Wish You Were Here probably come close to closing the door on the whole prog show for me. Until Year of the Cat pushed it open again strumming acoustic guitars (Al Stewart's Indian Summer is a wonderful sounding track in the same vein, recorded a few years later).

1. Wow, you're only the third person I've seen mention Miraculous Hump. It got a great write-up in Stereo Review when it came out, and about 5 years later a co-worker friend mentioned it as one of his favorite sleeper albums. So glad to see that you like this record too. 2. I'd include Benefit along with Stand Up in the Jethro Tull positives. 3. The prog album I listen to most is Free Hand by Gentle Giant. Enjoy much of your list, especially Procol Harum. My list would also include: Strawbs "Grave New World" great concept piece, no extended instrumentals. The Neon Philharmonic "The Moth Confesses" - great orchestral piece (w/ some Chet Atkins and synth mixed in), one top forty song (Morning Girl) and a story line. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown....side one may contend w/ Procol Harum's "In Held 'Twas in I" as very first extended concept piece, both being about a journey through hell. Van Dyke Parks "Song Cycle" as prog(ressive) as they get. I would also add Procol Harum's "Home" which at times reminds me of reading Hesse "Narcissus and Goldmund" travelling through plague-ridden Europe (what did happen to Jenny Dru..what town was sacked, what tower robbed?). Renaissance "Sheherezade" - musical version of 1,001 Nights.

I’m not a big fan of Tales from Topographic Oceans , but there are some beautiful passages of music within it , that are among the best that Yes has created . The absolute nicest group of people you could ever want to spend three days with...the artists certainly as well! It's general!y a very, very nice community. I should add that prog is not all endless jamming. That is a notion held only by those who have a limited exposure to the huge and ongoing prog catalog out there. Much of it involves very well crafted songs and suites which are in no way indulgent of ego. It is a much misunderstood , misrepresented and maligned genre. By the way those Klattu records are all excellent.

Poor old Phil Collins - still catching grief. Maybe "Trick of the Tail" can stay in the house.......? Wondering if you've come across Steven Wilson (and his earlier band, Porcupine Tree). I love his stuff. Of his PT albums I would recommend especially In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet. Of his solo albums I would most enthusiastically recommend "Grace for Drowning" and "The Raven that Refused to sing" (how's that for a Prog album titles?!). He is a restless musician, whose style and preoccupations are constantly evolving. "Grace...." is heavily influenced by King Crimson, with lots of plangent mellotron. I do urge you to investigate. A one-off album that lands somewhere between prog, flower-power and electronica is 2002's "The Isness" by the Future Sound of London under the name Amorphous Androgynous. I think it is gorgeous. Far out, man!

I loved Yes until I bought Relayer. It made me laugh because it seemed so silly. I hear it now and love it. Steve Howe is Jimmy Page without the heroin. (But maybe he was on drugs too. I don't know)

I recall seeing Brain Salad Surgery in the record store when I was a kid, and it scared me. I figured this is gonna be so over my head. Better stay away. Listened to it years later as an adult, and, boy howdy, does it suck. Not my bag of weed. Altho, compared to Love Beach, it's a masterpiece.

There is 90s-oughts genre called "Math Rock," so named because if its use of ridiculously complicated, Brufordian time changes.

Outstanding video. I know Prog is a very divisive subject for music lovers. Everything that you showed is highly listenable and not too daunting for a neophyte. I was excited for you to show the Miraculous Hump LP. Absolutely one of my favorite records in 50 years of collecting. Love your videos. Keep the vinyl spinning.

Even though I was going for the cheap prog shots, it seems I actually showed some pretty great records this time . Who'd a thunk??

"Too much Bill Bruford..." LMAO! However, I think that the early Genesis-Records with P. Collins as singer are cool, f.e. the livealbum "Second's out" or "A Trick of the Tail". If you have an original pressing of these two albums, Mazzy, pls gimme a call before you throw them out of your window.

Prog is a very late 80s or 90s term. It was called Progressive Rock and still is. I'd be happy to see the late abbreviation "prog" die off like the dinosaurs.

Swedish prog is ONLY about politics and back then (Swedish) lovers of Swedish progg (two Gs) didn't like the prog-prog music (mostly British). A collegue and I came to the conclusion that prog was about playing the most complicated riffs between two chords (whereas jazz was about playing the most unnecessary riffs between two chords). And I love prog!

I have a candidate for you, a classical album, by that I mean considered “classical music” anyway it’s prog to me The Planets by Holst. Smoke it if you got it, turn the volume up and for good measure put the headphones on! Very satisfying.

Hi Mazzy, It's Mark Anthony K from Projekt Gemineye. When I saw this video...I was immediately interested...being that I love prog music and have my own prog metal band. Interesting opinions on what you feel prog music is about..I'm not here to argue your comments..even though I could. ..but I'll say this..not all prog albums have stupid stories that no one cares about. .if you truly believe that then you know little about prog and the people who listen to it. And Yessongs is a true live classic. ..which literally put Yes on the map. By the way The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway sucks...Genesis were much better off without Gabriel...Trick of the Tail proved that. Hope you and the family are doing well. Looking forward to your next video. Mark Anthony K Projekt Gemineye

I haven't seen a youtube video about progressive music by a guy who knows less about progressive music. You win the prize Norman. No one should take your advice - and you'd agree - why - because it's quite clear you don't like prog. As a guy your age - we couldn't be further apart in our tastes/appreciation/admiration for music that tries to create/explore/captivate its' listeners. Enjoy your videos but I'm sure you'd defend my right to majorly disagree on just about everything you said in this video - and even more on the the things you didn't say. I'd make suggestions to enhance or provide you greater prog insight - but why bother - you don't want to like prog - your mind is made up. Rock on Norman - I'll see you on your next video - a video that I'm sure you'll have a greater grasp on then what you've shown here.

Actually I like and enjoy a lot of prog music. I have way more records in the genre than these I showcased here, most of which might be prog lite (thus the videos title). But yes you and others probably know way more about artists in the genre. I saw countless many live shows when these bands came through the city in the early to mid 70s and then stopped as I was getting bored with some of the excess. It got to be a parody of itself and it can be easily mocked like my riff on it here. The video is a joke but I learned the lack of a sense of humor by many prog freaks. More than other genres I’ve experienced.

Right Maz, Proressive Rock is simply exactly what the title suggests. Music of different styles or it could be different time signatures or done with non-traditional instruments even or even stange lyrics...Or it could be a mixture of some or all of those things "proggressing" from symple traditional forms...and Yes !.. Bruford doesn't Have to be the drummer! 🤣

Your listening skills are too basic to enjoy prog. "The Three Fates" followed by "Tank" is ELP spilling genius right before your ears. Nobody in rock composed at the level of melodic invention capable from Keith Emerson! And am I going to complain if Palmer solos like freakin' Buddy Rich? Nope. I want more of it. Look at Melody Maker's readers polls in the early 1970s and you'll see Emerson and Palmer at the very top of those lists. They were also admired by the readers of Playboy magazine-- a group of notorious music snobs that loved complex music! They also placed well in Down Beat polls, being put right up against jazz musicians. Topographic Oceans is Steve Howe's guitar composing masterpiece. Why do you think he and Anderson won Best Composers in Melody Maker the year after this album was released? And why did he win Best Overall Guitarist from Guitar Player Magazine five years in a row? Because he played too complex? He could play so many styles it was jaw dropping. Definitely one of the most revered guitarist of the 1970s. I'm not sure how can you possibly be a jazz fan and then complain about prog solos as "wankering." The strength of prog musicians overall was in ARRANGEMENT. But if they put their minds to it they could do a good extended solo as well. But it's false to say that was a constant of the genre. The constant was superb and courageous albeit challenging arranging. But prog fans enjoyed a good challenge. One of my favorite moments of the genre was Todd Rundgren's Utopia's 30 minute "The Ikon," (lots of soloing in that album-- Todd recently said that most of the band was in the jazz fusion camp) and Todd's 36 minute "A Treatise on Cosmic Fire," the most courageous electronic composition of the decade.

It’s weird that you think Laurie Anderson’s five LP live set from 1983 is a “prog masterpiece” but Yessongs from ten years earlier is “overbearing” because it contains three live LPs.
