@Grim Looters "When you've formed your own philosophy of life, death and morality, it can be easy and sit back and call the historic religions immoral" WRONG. It's only easy to call this cult immoral because I can point out the abundance of obviously immoral things in it. It's also easy because I don't have to lie to myself and pretend those immoral things aren't immoral, desperately defending it, desperately trying to find excuses. Like you.

As a Christian myself, I believe what the Bible teaches is for my own life to follow not make everybody else follow the rules of the Bible when they haven't even made that commitment themselves. The Bible also says not to be Hypocrites which most of the Christians today that are getting political and wanting to force others to do what they feel is right instead of what that person feels is right is radicalizing Christianity as a whole and that's a very sad thing. Religion should be a personal commitment between you and your God and nothing more. Christians are supposed to be examples of the way that they believe God wants them to live their lives. That alone is supposed to make others want to be like them. But if all you're doing is persecuting others by using the Bible that does nothing but Chase others away from God in Christ and religion in general.

And how any decent human being of any persuasion could demand that an 11yo rape victim be forced to carry her pregnancy to viability simply shows how heartless they are, how uncaring of the pregnant girl/female and how non krischun. Life begins at first breath (not conception l) 3. Abortions should by provided at church, by the clergy at a special alter. I can provide the specifics if anyone is interested. Also, the "true bible" doesn't speak against homosexuality, that was a mistranslation from the 1940's. It actually speaks against pedophilia, but we've seen how the Christian church doesn't care about that.

Much like adultery doesn't require actual sexual acts, just your MIND; that is where the sin is. @Joseph_Knight
@Joseph_Knight Жыл бұрын
Christian Leftist here, and after carefully studying the scriptures I have found that life officially begins for an individual at the point of birth when God breathes life into that person. And there are multiple verses to justify this. 1st when looking into the issue you can start in Genesis 2:7 ; "Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being" So here we clearly see that a man was formed, and then God breathed life into him which gave him life. So he's not alive until man is breathing the life of God. Other versus confirm this like Job 33:4 ;“The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life." And in Ezekiel 37:5 "Thus says the Lord God to these bones, ‘Behold, I will cause breath to enter you that you may come to life" And many others. Next in Exodus we see a more clear depiction of the difference between a fetus and an actual living breathing person in versus 21 : 22-25 ; "And if men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no [further] injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him; and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any [further] injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise" here we see clearly that if the child was a life of its own, then a life for a life would have been prescribed for the penalty, but its only a fine. So we can see the Bible clearly makes a distinction in the fetus and the living breathing human being. I believe that the child in the mothers womb can be considered "alive" but it, according to the Word, is not considered its own life. For it depends on the life of the mother, so its not a person of its own, yet. Now, I don't believe its necessarily Gods will for women to just abort babies left and right just because you can, but I think this decision should be between the mother and the family and the family doctor. Each person should work out this decision with their own faith and what is best for their situation.

A fetus is treated like a woman's property in the law of Moses. “When men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined, according as the woman’s husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." (Exodus 21:22-25 RSV)
@tarag7292
@tarag7292 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. And this is one of the scriptures I talk about when people talk about how life begins at conception and that the fetus has just as much value or more than the woman's. The Bible is pretty explicit in many topics, but abortion ain't one of them, and they were happening in biblical times too. The Bible is completely neutral on the topic. As a matter of fact, someone read the Bible cover to cover and couldn't find one explicit passage against abortion (and though shalt not kill doesn't count). So people really need to stop using the Bible to hinge their stance against abortions.

Well said! The only time abortion is mentioned in the Old Testament like you said, is to provide instructions for one. In addition, I believe when it is mentioned in the New Testament it is in reference to the punishment for committing the crime of forcing a pregnant woman to miscarry. It is treated as a property crime not murder. So clearly, neither the old or new testament value a fetus as a life. The life of the mother is always more important.

I fall into that category of Christian or a similar one. If God let Adam and Eve choose I believe we should let women choose. As far as I can see that is the biblical perspective on any kind of choice one might decide to make. If you want to do something God will not stop you even if the consequences are catastrophic like the history of Adam and Eve teaches us about God and the human will and the consequences of misusing human will. On that basis I call the anti choice crowd into question. If you're against abortion don't have an abortion and leave it at that. You can't choose for other people. It is improper to do that. That's a preposterous proposition, isn't it? I don't know why Christians just can't follow God's example and let people make their own choices. If it was good enough for God to do what could possibly be improper in simply behaving like God?

I really like what this caller had to say. My biggest problem with organized religion is a that many people are hypocrites. My ex mother in law used to tell me that she didn’t car which church I went to as long as I attended. I named a couple different faiths and she literally told me that they should be shot; they all think they’re right. I may not attend church but I practice the golden rule. I do my best to treat people with respect, kindness, and mind my own business; the way that I want to be treated. If you believe in God and the teachings of Jesus, you wouldn’t be participating in hate speech, bigotry, and racism.

Never heard of “Progressive Christian”. I am a Bible believing Christian, who believes life begins at conception. I love that you asked the caller about scripture and verse and noticed he couldn’t answer. He just gave his personal view. True Christianity is based in the Bible, even when we don’t like it or agree with what it says.
@tansiian
@tansiian Жыл бұрын
Well now you have. But who are you to determine what True Christianity is? Christ himself did not mention homosexuality or abortion. And if you want to revert to the Old Testament, I'm almost certain you wear polyester, eat shellfish, disagree with stoning people, and don't think 12y/o girls should be sold into marriage. And that would make you not a "True" Bible believing Christian.
@tarag7292
@tarag7292 Жыл бұрын
@@tansiian I agree. The old testament doesn't even condemn abortion. The closest thing you get in the Bible is that life begins at first breath, and that is in Genesis. For a while the church wasn't even against abortion because it wasn't in the Bible. This whole anti abortion movement is relatively new and something that Catholic church made up. Just like they say that drinking is a sin. Well tell that to the savior who turned water into wine. It's a lie.

This is one very good contribution to the DP show. People tend to forget that there are progressive Christrians - actually spreading the love and care that Jesus taught instead of hatred - since, well, they're not in the spotlight that much. Kudos to this caller. Fun fact: the Bible mentions nothing about homosexual _relationships_ . Nothing at all! The caller can be fully at peace with his brother's marriage.

I am a "Mormon" Christian and I believe in behaving as Christ would have us behave. That is with love, caring and understanding. I was raised to accept people how they are. That includes race, color, religion and preferences in life style. Let everyone live their life and we all have consequences for our actions and Heavenly Father will be the judge. We have the right to free agency. We don't know what someone is going through, we don't have the right to judge someone for their actions. Heavenly Father loves all of us. I think hewill judge us all for the hate that is on our country. To me the abortion issue is a free agency thing.

However we live in Australia where more than 1/3 of the population doesn't identify with any religion, and the religious right are far less prominent in general society (though just like in the USA, they have quite deliberately concentrated on making inroads into certain conservative political parties so that they might get a chance to legislate their views).

And finally Psalm 139: 13 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. Adoption is a great solution which avoids killing that wonderful human being made in the likeness of God!

The caller that kicked off this thread has a well thought out Christian approach to human existence. However, I really have difficulty with the idea of "progressive" Christians. For me, Christianity itself already includes the ideas currently attributed to "progressive" Christians. The so called "Christian Nationalists" misuse the label "Christian" in their actions, speech, and behaviour. Their ideas are a contradiction of the Christian faith. However, to see this for what it is one needs to be capable of rational thought. There appears to be many humans that have difficulty with philosophical guidelines and need a few simple rules to work with. For centuries some elements of the church (of whatever religion) has manipulated the "keep it simple" crowd by dumbing down religious thinking to chanting and ranting. For the last few centuries politicians have wrapped themselves in church banners and used chanting and ranting similar to that of parts of the church to manipulate voters and restrict the acquired rights of parts of the general population. When it's so easy these days to fact check the spouting of politicians, how can anyone be persuaded by the distorted revisions of Christian thinking present in much of Republican outpourings in the last few years. Snake oil salesmen have long been recognized for what they are, what's so difficult about the Christian Nationalists?

I am an Evangelical Christian and personally pro life. But I also want our country to remain a constitutional democratic republic. So by necessity I have to be politically pro choice because that's where the majority of our country falls. That said, our country has never had a serious debate about the rights of the unborn. I think we need to honestly and vigorously debate that subject and let the country decide what we believe. To other Christians: if we want our culture to adopt Christian values we need to demonstrate why those values create a better society. Right now we mostly don't demonstrate those values in public much less compelling reasons people who aren't Christians would benefit from adopting them. We need to accurately judge ourselves by our own values or the rest of the world will do that job for us.

It is unconditional at all times.

I know three progressive Christians in the U.S. and I live in Denmark, so yeah, they are out there. I have more trouble with the concept ‘progressive’ than I have with the concept ‘Christian’, anyway. Quite a few people claim to be progressives without that having much influence on their political ideas. Even more claim to be Christians without the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth seeming to have a real impact on their views of life or other humans. I’m a pagan anarchist, and I’m good with that.
