Dude, love your passion for Yes. So interesting to have Drama as number 2, but I totally understand. My personal number one is Going For the One. What an amazing work of art! I saw them live in ‘79. Best concert of my life. It was a sold out Pittsburgh Civic arena, all the way around, because it was “in the round”. Also saw them in ‘80 for the Drama tour. This also was a spectacular show. But the Pittsburgh Civic arena was half empty. Many could not accept the absence of Jon Anderson, but the 1980 lineup was tight, and smokin hot. Cheers from across the pond.

Just want to say that I loved this and thanks. I was lucky to see them 3 times. Tales tour and much later 90125, Big Generator. As I play keyboards, a shout out to Tony Kaye and as you pointed out Patrick. But with Wakeman, Yes changed music, took it further, what creativity and talent.

Really cool ranking here. I have to respect anyone with the passion to make it through Yes’ entire studio discography, which I haven’t even been able to do yet. I had been going in release order until a few years ago when I was too put off by Open Your Eyes to keep going. I did listen to The Quest when it came out, though, since it was their newest album after I became a fan. Anyways, here’s my ranking of everything I’ve heard so far. 15. The Quest - “The Ice Bridge” is a cool song. Too bad it’s not a totally original composition. Aside from that, I like “Leave Well Alone” quite a bit. The rest of the album sucks. By far my least favorite album so far 14. Union - Bloated and way too long. Not really bad so much as I find it boring 13. Big Generator - Meh. A couple good songs on it. I love “Love Will Find a Way,” but I don’t care for most of the other songs 12. Talk - I like it. Maybe not one of Yes’ best works, but for 90s Yes, I’d say it’s pretty solid 11. Tales from Topographic Oceans - It’s decent. I feel like most of the songs don’t need to be as long as they are and they’re not as musically interesting as most songs on the other albums 10. Tormato - It’s a good album. Flawed for sure, but there’s enough solid material on it for me to revisit it every once in a while 9. Relayer - It’s good, but I think the album takes its time too much. I do love the chaotic nature of “Sound Chaser,” though 8. Yes - A very strong album with some great songs indicative of what would be heard on their later albums 7. Going for the One - I love almost everything on this. The only thing holding it back is “Turn of the Century,” which I find to be a boring slog that doesn’t fit with the rest of the album 6. 90125 - A fun pop album that still retains Yes’ Prog stylings of the albums before it 5. Fragile - I love the bigger songs written by the whole band. As for the others, well “The Fish” and “Mood for a Day” are great 4. Time and a Word - I really love the simple sound of this album. It’s one of my go-to albums for a pleasant but still musically interesting listen 3. Drama - By far their most underrated album. Happy to see it getting a lot of love here 2. Close to the Edge - Probably their definitive best album, but I just prefer one album over it for nostalgia reasons 1. The Yes Album - It was my first Yes album so I associate most of the songs on it with my experience getting into the band

Having grown up with 70's Yes, I couldn't take the Trevor Rabin version and nothing after Drama is essential although there is some stuff I like. The Peter Banks albums are okay but they sound too 60's to me. 1. Relayer 2. Close to the Edge 3. Going for the One 4. Tales 5. The Yes Album 6. Drama 7. Fragile 8. Tormato 9. Keystudio I was excited when I heard "Homeworld" but the rest of The Ladder didn't measure up. I don't hate "Open Your Eyes" as much as some do but I consider it more a Squire/Sherwood Conspiracy album than a Yes album. All the remaining albums I have only listened to samples of and they left me cold.

There was prog Yes which created Yes fanatics like myself. Then came new wave Yes (drama) which had the chops and was fun but to me, just wasn't Yes. Then came MTV Yes which really turned me off. There was too much new stuff from other artists like Radiohead and Tool, etc. that had the adventurous feel that drew me in to Yes. Still, there was a song here and there that I liked. I too liked Hearts. Final Eyes was nice. Trevor Rabin put a monstrous effort into Talk and was mecilously hammered by critics for his effort. But Talk was really the last thing from Yes that held any kind of interest for me. Still, there is always the classic stuff from the 70s. Time hasn't diminished that at all. They were unique and talented.

Drama for me is just horrible. Terrible concert at the LA Sports arena. Downes just cannot play what Wakeman plays on the classic tracks. Trevor's vocal not on spot on the classics as well. In the radio broadcast of the MSG show it his vocal is just not up to snuff. Downes again the same. Though I did see Downes a couple years later with Asia at Santa Monica Civic and he kicked ass. GREAT show!!

Some of Yes's greatest albums are the most hated or most overlooked, and some of their most loved are garbage. I actually loved Union all the way through and Drama for being one of the tighter sounding albums with more accessible prog rock. Everybody also forgets about their first two albums featuring Peter Banks for some dumb reason. Going for the One and Relayer have to be the worst sounding albums, mix wise. They are a mess and only have a few good songs. But the definitive Yes will always be The Yes Album and Fragile. Those albums are clean, complex, and catchy enough for one not accustomed to their lengthier songs.

Pity they had such a weak lead singer. Imagine Yes with a Peter Gabriel or, well, me for eff’s sake. Seriously. Jon’s not all bad but he def the weak link. And I wuz kidding about my voice - I don’t have the top end and few bands have a true baritone/bass as the lead.

Drama is probably one of the most important albums in Yes' catalog... Trevor Horn joined on Drama and returned to produce 90125 as a result. "Fly From Here" originated from demos in this time period, resulting in the later "Fly From Here" release(s). Geoff Downes worked with Steve Howe on this album, resulting in the group ASIA and more than a dozen studio albums. If Jon Anderson hadn't left Yes, we wouldn't have the Jon and Vangelis albums or his fabulous solo albums Song of Seven and Animation.

Great video, thank you! I think I can't really pick a favourite Yes album, probably the big 4 (for about 9 out of 10 Yes fans) is Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Relayer, Going for the One (Fragile almost making it for me, but solid 5th place nevertheless). This is why Yes is such a magical band: every album could be number 1 for a day: Going for the One with its overall positiveness, Relayer with its gothic and mysterious atmoshpere, Tales having an ancient religious mood, and Close to the Edge with high emotions and a natural feel to it. PS.: Do you consider doing a "Worst to Best" of Jethro Tull or Genesis? The "A" album in the background made me wonder...

I am so glad you gave every era it’s due. They grow and change, like all of us, and for them to have been stuck in the 70’s style would have meant the end of Yes in the 80’s. I must say I LOVE DRAMA!!!! It keeps going up my rankings of Yes albums. You are right. It is fucking flawless. My number one is a tie, I just can’t pick a winner and that is The Yes Album and Fragile. I love the Fish, I can’t listen to Long Distance Runaround without it. But the rest of the solo stuff is a bit of a distraction. Let me be clear, I am not the Wakeman disciple like every other Yes fan. The Yes Album is flawless, not a bad moment on it. Of course Drama is next! Those three albums are some of my favorites of all time, not just Yes.

@@211arangeoftones Oddly enough the part that actually lives up to what I thought might be the content was the intro to The Ancient and that's the part most people who have an opinion on this record don't care for. Ah well.

Interesting ranking. I would personally have Fly From Here a lot lower, but it’s decent. Close To The Edge is probably my favorite. Although I wouldn’t put it MUCH higher than Fragile, The Yes Album, and Going For The One. Which are some of their other best albums. What are your thoughts on the latest one, The Quest?

Hey Zach. I think you named their best work right there! I love Fragile but I just think the flow of it suffers from each of their solo songs. Gives a bit of a stop start feel to it. I do enjoy Fly From Here a lot more as I listen to it. Feels naturally good! To be honest, I could barely get through The Quest. I hear people say it gets better as a grower but man o man it's boring the shite out of me at the moment!

I feel like Jon did a lot to ruin '80s yes. Instead of referencing his source material in abstract and poetic ways, he began hitting us over the head with his philosophy directly and it made a lot of his songs seem exactly the same. 90125 was as good as it was because the lyrics were largely written before he came on board, whereas Big Generator was a lot more blunt.

I have a soft spot for 90125 - in the mid 80s I was mainly liking fairly normal straightforward rock/metal and pop so this was an excellent bridge or gateway to appreciating Yes who I had dismissed as kind of crap. 90125 is very inventive for a pop rock album. Of course having listened to most of their albums now some of Yes' output has been kind of crap Drama, Tales From Topographic Oceans but theres also great stuff like Close To The Edge, Fragile and Going For The One

You’ve all achieved something I couldn’t - or wouldn’t... Can’t see the point in ranking the albums... for mine it’s akin to choosing which of your children you most prefer. I can find reasons in every individual album/section/song why I’m moved in ways that no other band or music can. I’d never give away, or underplay any of the Yes catalogue... they’re all a precious gift to me and are cherished! Still, to see yours and everyone’s enthusiasm for the albums and your preferences is really cool... I appreciate and value your comments!

Most of what came after Talk did not stick, so many i‘ve listened to and almost instantly forgot. Magnification is an exception, saw them on tour, live the Album is really good. I prefer to listen to the classics in their live versions, on Yessongs and Yesshows, thats why i don‘t really rank the Original albums, Gates of Delirium or Close to the Edge or And You and I has much more power live. Drama i would rank very very low, good songs, unlistenable cause of the horrible vocals. If i had to rate: 1.Close to the Edge 2.Going for the One 3.Fragile 4.Relayer 5.Tales from Topographic Oceans 1. 90125 2.Talk 3.Big Generator It’s too different to rate it all in one List.

This can only be personal opinion. My choices would very likely be very different to yours but, I say this. The last two would be the worst two . I.e. Heaven and Earth and The Quest. There you go - that was easy.

Great work bro. It’s very difficult to rank a discography this big but you did it! I do have one question though, why is it that every prog reviewer I ever see has like 100s of CDs, but very little vinyl. I always thought that it was consensus that vinyl was superior, but yet like every prog reviewer I see on KZbin is always showing CDs instead of LPs

Very tough task to rank YES albums. That’s a very good job you’ve done here but I suppose my list might be a little bit different. I will be going to see them when they bring their Relayer tour to Dublin. Hoping they do some of The Quest too. I’ve been trying to get my hands on Fly From Here (I have Return Trip) with Benoit David but it’s very hard to find that one here in Ireland. Looking forward to your Genesis & Jethro Tull rankings 👍
