"If you want a backseat, that kinda sucks, but who cares about the back seat?" As much as I chuckled? He's absolutely right if you're this far into a AE86 build.

This is a great video for anyone that is working on any rear live axle RWD car. Been developing my 1960s Alfa Romeo with homemade mods and fitted a watts linkage on the rear axle and am now looking into anti squat and anti dive. Your explanations are awesome! Great to hear other people talking about these subjects to broaden our personal understanding. Thank you!

Same here! I'm updating my rear watts link on my 87 alfa romeo milano. Interesting to see similarities with the 86. Funny enough I actually think like the milano looks a a lot like an 86 (the Levin) in the way that it looks from the front. Funny parallel

The only thing I would change for my needs. The majority of the time on the street with my kids. Would be poly ends. At least poly ends on the body side. Also, yes I am enjoying this content!!! Can’t wait to watch how you decide to reinforce the chassis! I’m taking notes over here!

Cool ass setup but kinda takes some of the fab fun out lol but I will definitely have to remember this video!!!!!! Not sure if that power assist is the same company that was making them around 15 20 years ago but me and a buddy put one in a old Camero or firebird can't remember he had took the old power out to put a track steering set up in but realized it wasn't good for street use in slow driving I found a setup like that on line and it worked great dint have the adjustment but made it so much easier to drive when you have to go slow lol

Sort of needs some difficult fab to put those upper mounts in correctly.

I'm really curious to see how the electric power steering turns out. Those extended rear trailing arms seem like a massive improvement, but damn I really like the look of my full interior. Mike's really about to make me gut the rear of my car just so I can pull off one long drift out of turn 9 at laguna. Either way, loving the build, this is a lot of good insight about the 86 suspension kinematics, keep it up!

I would love to se Mike explaining how to calculate size of spherical bearings, he keeps saying they oversized, but how the hell calculate what is a correct size for given loads/weight? As always great video and great little car to have.
@motoiq5 күн бұрын
It is not easy but you can estimate the given load by adding all the force vectors on it, multiplying it by the lever arm on it, and adding a 2x factor of safety in case your math sucks. I don't recommend you even try unless you are good at math and physics. If you are not, look at other successful proven designs and copy them. I don't want to sound disrespectful but if you have to ask, you shouldn't try.

Mike, what are the chances you guys do a walkaround of the projects in the garage? The jade R35 is obviously interesting, but we want to see the RX7, 240z and everything else you guys have hiding in the background.

Those are not our cars so the owners might not want their stuff shown. Or we are only doing part of the build and we don't approve of the rest of the car.

Now would be a great time to build a mumford linkage setup in the rear!
@motoiq5 күн бұрын
I mean a watts linkage does the same thing with less parts, the only advantage is a Mumford linkage has better ground clearance so maybe you could set the roll center lower but why would you want to get it even lower than a watts can? I prefer a panhard rod anyway. Less parts and you can place the roll center about where you would want it. The only disadvantage is a slight migration in lateral location if the pahard geometry is correct.

I wish you could do this kind of video for a Mk1 MR2 but grip instead of drift mods. Sadly, it's not as acclaimed as the AE86. 😢 However, this is very useful info. Thanks for that.

Great video Mike, learning a lot every video, thanks! I have a 70's car that has unequal length 4link + a panhard bar. Your comments about the rear suspension helped me a lot to understand why I am getting wheel hop. Got most of the upgrades in the video with the exception of sway bars, still using the stock ones. Got mid-corner understeer, how would you try to fix that one? Upgrade sway bars?
@motoiq4 күн бұрын
Try to get the most grip out of the front first, like making sure you have enough front negative camber, your front bar isnt binding, you have the right tire pressure, your shocks are adjusted right, if the front is working well, then add more rear roll stiffness.

Hi Mike, generally how do you prefer to balance roll stiffness between springs and anti roll bars? For a rally application would it make sense forego anti roll bars for the extra suspension articulation?
@motoiq5 күн бұрын
In rally you still want bars, just not big ones.
@XX-nw1xg5 күн бұрын
@ generally what spring to bar balance do you target? Do you keep the bars for balance tuning purposes?
@motoiq5 күн бұрын
It depends. Most cars have a greater percentage of roll resistance in the bars, even from the factory.
