Weather you realize it or not, you have proven that your worthy of many talents, your not lazy, frugal yes but that justifies the need for a brewski after a long trec to labor so hard on something most would deem imposible from the start. I myself am happy to see you turn on the thinking cap and find the reasons that the fluid didn't pass this time or what ever it be as you work fast there or lose what you had to rust. I would think that in the twenty first century we could figure a way to stop a rust molecule from ever starting in the first place. While the two of you get on the organ and find the sounds, deviate from that and find what stops rust and by all means be very proud

Max I know this comment is a bit late but here it is: don't look to the finished item but focus on each task, then it doesn't seem so large, as they say round here" steady away". They idea is to prevent the project from stalling by just doing a bit every week, this is from my personal experience not some far out twaddle, cheers

Always remove the battery negative cable first and always fit it back last........... that way if your spanner touches ground while removing the positive it wont go bang lol............. and can always insulate the spanner with some electrical tape and keep as "battery spanner" in tool box. good vids as always max!

You sir are a great problem solver and you remind me of my brother, I have watched all you videos over a period of time and this Zil project comes a close first , the Zil and the Daf engine are truly a AWESOME match. I drove artics for 30yrs and twice I slipped on the cab steps whilst getting out of the cab and twice I broke my ankle , when I saw you slip I was waiting for the crack but thankfully it didn't happen . Take care Max and looking forward to your next video , what ever it may be of.

It could be that the full ankle support from those high boots helped. There's been a few times work boots like that have saved me from snapping myself off at the ankles. They've got zip sided ones now that are easy to get on and off (lace up to fit, then zip to get them off).

It's nice how you can almost walk under the truck, remain on your haunches and do what needs done underneath. As for the project, it's difficult to see the end when everywhere you look there are things to do, but one step at a time and you will be surprised how quickly it does come together and you'll start to think of improvements.

Grand to see the ZIL on the move again. May I make a suggestion on the batteries? When you rebuild the step, fab up a slide out tray for the batteries, so hooking up the leads and maintenance/charging etc can be done with plenty of space.

Real glad nothing went wrong with the batteries during install. Otherwise I you might need more than just a new spanner... worst case some new eyes and a hand? I have seen the shoe of a man who dropped a spanner from a ladder onto a battery bank. It was ... chrome 'plated' _eeeek_ I have no space, no money to spare and no skills, so I am living vicariously through you - I love your engineering and your explanation. Long may it run!

Great to see another video on Project Awesome. I started watching these at the beginning of the year and since lockdown have caught up on all your videos, loved them all. Particularly liked your book reviews. However, the best I watched has to be your Q & A session during your testing of Ironthumper Ale (fellow viewers please watch if you haven't done so). It has to rate as one of the most entertaining things I have watched during lockdown; laugh out loud and weeping. Thanks to you and Mark for that.

The temp probe for the fans should go in the outlet for the rad. The rad cools the engine, the fans cool the rad when it can't loose enough heat. This way engine comes up to operating temp as quickly as possible and doesn't over cool and is running as efficiently as possible.

One random mid-vid thought, the ZIL looks like it still has the Choke control fitted on the dash for the old V8 guzzler, maybe you could use that as a manual throttle to raise the revs to build up air in the tanks? That way you don't need to sit there hoofing the throttle to get things to wake up... :)
