Take it from an electronics engineer. The Capacitor you chose is probably a film type cap (polypropylene or polystyrene). They're the absolute best for this application. Moreover, they're exactly what the original cap was in that can, but with 30-50 years of progress in material science. Also, the capacitor in this application is to form sort of an LC resonant circuit in the primary of the Iggie Coil, which, in turn, massively increases the output voltage. Cheers!
@willgrime26 күн бұрын
I’d really appreciate some advice on practical upgrades for capacitors. Modern reproductions of older (50s) capacitors seem to be totally useless. Is there a simple practical upgrade a non-electronics-expert can use?
@GearAcquisitionSyndrome26 күн бұрын

Really good to watch someone who has an understanding of ignition systems. The capacitor is hugely overlooked as a potential for problems. Had multiple people tell me it was purely to stop radio interference. Turns out that’s why my vehicle was frying ignition modules in less than 1000kms.

I know we joke about the reliability of Land Rover but my 1994 200tdi was one of the most reliable vehicles I ever had she didn’t need much to get her going on cold mornings, she was regularly serviced between 8000-10,000 miles. She went for nine years in my ownership and the only thing that stopped her working twice was a busted thermostat and a sheer pin in the hi lo selector box otherwise in 9 years she kept going strong. Loved her so,d her as she wasn’t getting used as much

It’s interesting to see how these rover v8s are put together, I have a 62 Buick special that is equipped with the 3.5 liter aluminum v8 that became the rover engine after the design was sold in the mid 60s. There’s a remarkable amount of design features that remained unchanged, it’s amazing how long these motors were in service all over the world

Another exemplary video Croker. You set a terrific example for all youtubers by FOLLOWING THE FACTORY WORKSHOP MANUAL. If you do this you will generally end up with a good result. I am sorry to learn of your coolant loss issue after all the work you have put in to the vehicle. Most of that crap in a bottle ends up blocking the radiator. Working on motorcars is brutal, good intentions count for NOTHING. Expect to see a 25% improvement in fuel economy by having a functioning vacuum advance unit, as opposed to a malfunctioning one, alone. Thank you for posting your fine content.

Excellent content as always! If you ever decide to tackle the head gaskets, you might need to get everything chemical flushed to remove the remnants of that stop-leak stuff. However, 'while you're in there' you could replace those injectors with modern equivalents with better spray pattern. Hopefully will help a little with the (dreadful) economy? As another comment said, check/replace the camshaft too - if oil changes was not a priority with previous owners, you may have a couple of round bits instead of lumpy bits. If the engine is gutless down low and wakes up when you get up to and beyond 3.5 - 4k RPMs then that's a sign of camshaft wear.
