@emmettjones51659 ай бұрын
This is some of the finest content on KZbin. The doc on the Voyagers is especially visually stunning, hauntingly beautiful, and expertly narrated and edited. All of the Homemade Documentaries fit this description as well. I have cried real tears watching our struggles in space during Gemini, our trials and achievements during Apollo, awed to near submission at the grandeur of the images of just our solar system from Voyager, Cassini, and Huygens. I lived through most of these events and times, and I stand on the belief that Homemade Documentaries has covered all of these things in the most accomplished, professional and accurate manner as I have ever seen.

I met a gentleman a few years ago who worked at Johnson Space Center in the 60s. He described the engineers there as so brilliant that they didn't have common sense. Many would get lost in the building regularly and frequently forget where they parked. Complex equations and proving theoretical physics, no problem. Working a water fountain... complex issue. It is amazing to think of how many minds it took to make this happen.

I've worked with actuaries and a lot of them were the same. They couldn't park their cars, working the Dell laptops was hazardous, but their mathematical abilities were phenomenal and complex equations that I'd never, ever be able to understand were the work of seconds. And that's what gets me about this - the level of understanding that the scientists had of subjects I know nothing of is amazing, and the pilots' ability to execute the fruits of that and to keep a clear head in hazardous situations merits nothing other than awe.

It is September 2024. After pretty much exactly 58 years, Gemini 11's record Earth orbit apogee has been surpassed by a commercial space flight, Polaris Dawn, which also set a record for the farthest distance that women has traveled away from Earth and the farthest distance that humans have gone into space since 1972 (Apollo 17). While Polaris Dawn's records will (hopefully) not stand the test of time, this documentary certainly will. Thank you for this monumental and award-worthy effort to summarize this often overlooked, but most important space program that molded most of the NASA personnel that made Apollo such a resounding success!

Our family friend and flight director Glynn Lunney who you mentioned here in part 2, often remarked in later years that the Gemini Program was a vital intermediate step in the process during which so many problems and challenges were both discovered and overcome regarding the vital elements required to get to the moon and back. Just when I think that I know almost all of the historical elements of any of these early space programs, your documentary and research work always sheds new light. I was but a young NASA brat living in the Johnson Space Center area at the time of all of this, and though I don't personally remember a lot of details, I definitely remember the energy and focus towards the goal of the moon. Rather, each production is researched and professionally projected to a level I can only attribute to Andrew Chaikin before you. I never knew how long Gemini 8 actually struggled with their thruster. It was also chilling, but at the same time reaffirming, to listen in on Stafford's remarks during the GT-9A struggle. Stafford was a real commander, and obviously ready for his upcoming challenge on Apollo X. May he rest in peace. Again, thank you. I can only hope you continue your doc ventures into STS. There are lots of interesting flights to cover, both manned and unmanned. I am sure you already know of this, but Wayne Hale's blog might give you some interesting back stories. All the best /E
