This video really could be expanded into a series. Perhaps a walled city eventually could be made. With gates, towers-big and small, walls, walls with a stream opening, ruined walls, This really, really looks good.!!

Allowing for the extra space to remove the gates... ...clutch. That is the level of detail that makes your stuff so friggin' clever and elevates it from being just being amazing looking. Well played.

You could always create modular doors that can be placed against the towers with maybe a thin piece that tucks under the tower itself to steady it. Then you could have different styles available if you wanted for different scenarios. Really love this build, its setting my imagination on fire.

That was kind of my plan, and to do some steps that could lead to higher doors. I just never ended up doing it and have moved on to other projects.

Here's an idea - you can make the tower pieces stackable. That way you can make high impressive towers or split them into shorter watch posts and it's one more way to turn the lack of doors into a big advantage.

the door handles are probably what are called 'jump rings', which are used in jewelry making. Another option, and most likely cheaper, would be to get some wire and wrap it around a round object of the size you are looking for, and then snip them apart with fine wire cutters. The same technique is used for making chain mail links, albeit with heavier gauge wire. Great model! Love your stuff.

So for those of us who don't have a foam wire cutter, if you're looking to make thin strips like that, you can cut the strip out and then use a razor knife to very carefully cut it in half along the plane, but it works significantly better with a thin strip than it does with a thicker strip. It's how I make my wall shelves actually. I leave the paper on to give it a bit more rigidity making it easier to cut, and then carefully remove the paper after. Good video man, love the build, it's super cool.

Yup, I definitely used this technique before I had a hotwire table....but I gotta say, if you are really into building with foam the cost of a Proxxon table is absolutely worth the investment.

Absolutely LOVE your builds! I am inspired to make some terrain, if only I had somewhere to store it. I had a thought about your door hinges - you could insert a small bead into the foam above the door for the hinge dowel/toothpick to swivel in, so changing out your doors wouldn't wear on the top hole.

Great stuff. There are so many things I love about this piece. This build has given me other ideas of incorporating foam core and other insulation foam in future builds. Fantastic stonework and timber supports. The lanterns are great with the chains. Best of all is the flexibility in the overall build. If you are afraid of rambling too much, then I would suggest breaking up the explanation of techniques in separate videos. I actually enjoyed the walk through from the towers to the gate. One way to make a modular door and or ladder is make them be stand alone pieces. What I mean is have them on card stock and put them on the edge of the card stock so it can slide under your structure and the door or ladder will butt up against your structure. Use the structure that are going to butt up against and put a sheet of wax paper on it then build the door/ladder onto the wax paper this way the glue doesn't attach to your structure and comes away from the wax paper with ease. Then you can have the towers with or without the door and or ladder. This technic can also be used for any other modular building you make. You can do something like this for stained glass windows as well. Just make the windows and have one or more points that can be stuck into your buildings between the stones/bricks. I know this can be a little hard with more then one point if you do a random placement of stone/bricks and I would recommend a single point that you can stick in between the stone/bricks.

What I heard when you mentioned how many hours it took : "Yeah, so I can't remember how much hours I've sink into this. I was able to watch the entirety of Hankerin's vid on youtube." XD Awesome build! I like how you state how much usefulness it gets you (fort/town/gate/whatnot). I also find that multipurpose is always a top priority when I build stuff. Very specific build is cool, but if I take 5 hours building a thing I'll only ever use once... it's not really effective crafting to me.

Really fantastic job on this build and the video! I appreciate that you did the video covering each part, and it was an appropriate length. The painting is very nice overall, but especially on the brickwork. I saw the columns you did, but although I like the color variance, I'm not a fan of the stark contrast on those. These walls however are much more realistic looking, and I'd love to see a video on how you did the subtle blending. All the extra detail you applied to the walls, wood, supports, etc. really makes this a favorite of mine. Again thanks for your contributions to the crafting community, and I look forward to more. Oh, and thanks for the heads up about the scroll table...I was about to purchase one. A link to the proxxon one would be helpful. Cheers!

So 4 minutes in and I can see how this build could be made more modable, first would be to make to top bits of the two towers removable so they can be used as shacks or buildings, next one is to make a panel that can slot into the gate that covers the woodwork and looks like the brickwork, and this last one is a bit fiddly so stick a magnet to the inside of the walls of the towers at about a inch off the ground then make up a door shape with a connecting magnet in it and it should hold in place to be moved about but also easily removed. This last idea is also cool for stuff like secret doors or passages ways as to look at it’s just a wall until you stick a door to it.

I'm going to try to build this, but make it even MORE modular. I'll try to have the wooden parts detachable, so that stone parts can be put in their place interchangeably, and I like the idea of a detachable roof on top of each tower.

If you dont want a permanent door you could make a door in the usual method and mount a magnet in it and embed a magnet in the foam of the Tower that way the door would be removable and you can just slap it on whenever you want, you could do the same setup with a ladder.

@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
The way I did the door already is removable and non permanent
@theloafness
@theloafness 7 жыл бұрын
Black Magic Craft, excuse me, what i meant to say was, when you mentioned that you use either of the towers as a stand alone piece, and you had to tell the players to imagine there was a door or a ladder on one of the guard towers, if you wanted to add a removeable non functioning door to either of the towers, you could build a silhouette of a door and magnetically hold it to the side of the tower with a small magnet inside of the tower and simply remove it from the tower when you joined it back with the other two pieces. That way you have the realisim of the door being there and no confusion on which wall the door is actually on when you use the towers separately from the gate. And you can just yank it off with no real modifications to the either of the towers when join back with the gate. P.S. I've been binge watching your crafting videos, and you, Sir, craft well. These buildings look phenominal. This is some very inspirational work.

Another one knocked out of the ballpark! And per everyone else's comments, those lanterns rocked! I thought they were actually lit up as well. One question tho, when you say you coat everything in a couple of coats of modpodge, is that before or after you paint it?
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
thanks! this is usually my process....coat modpodge, second coat modpodge with black paint mixed in, paint, washes, last dry light dry brushing, miniwax polyurethane......on less elaborate projects I'll often skip either some of the mod podge depending on the build, elaborate stuff usually gets all of them. Sometimes I skip the miniwax if it is winter and too cold to go outside and spray. The mod podge I can always do indoors which is nice.

I know the insulation foam can be tough to get in some places, but foam core should be available everywhere. If you don't have Dollar Tree you may not be able to get the easy peel stuff, but you can certainly get the regular stuff that is actually better quality just harder to remove paper. There are lots of vids online describing methods for removing paper on those thougher brands. Are you in Australia? Because the insulation foam is available there through one of you big box builder stores. I researched it before. It is just a different colour. The price per board foot ended up being very similar to the price I pay once currency conversions were taken into account.

Hey man, been watching your videos as well as DMG and DMSCotty for a long time now but I think this is the first time I've ever commented on any video...ever. Anyway, just want to say that I think your stuff is absolutely amazing and your attention to detail really does take it that extra mile and really stand out. Your foam buildings are EXACTLY what I want to do for my own crafts but I have been stumped for so long on one very major thing...how do you cut down the thickness of the 1" thick pink insulation foam to get it to 1/2"? This is literally the only thing keeping me from making multiple buildings. I have plenty of craft tools and also have Foam Factory's hot wire scroll table (the regular one, not the 3D one). I know this is a long comment but I've been lurking through all these videos and stuff for too long to not ask how you make your 1/2" insulation foam sheets. I'm not a contractor or carpenter or anything like that but I do love learning this stuff. Maybe a short tutorial video of how you do it would suffice or just a simple, explanatory response would also be fine too (as long as my non-carpenter/non-handy man mind can understand it lol). One last thing, how do you make those foam "sticks" as you call them? Would love the explanation to them as well. Hopefully you read this and reply when you can. Thank you very, very much in advance and again, AWESOME stuff and keep up with this excellent work!
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The big secret to making 1/2" insulation foam is....wait for it....BUYING 1/2" insulation foam. I buy 2'x8'x1/2" thick boards from Home Depot. It's not available in some cities though, or at least not off the shelf. I do however custom cut many other thicknesses myself, like 10mm. I do this the same way I do the "sticks", I rip everything down on a hotwire table. The bad news is that you own the hotwire foam factory one....which I do as well, and have found pretty much useless for this task as the wire is too thick and it does not get nearly hot enough. It also has a pretty wonky fence. I eventually caved and bought the Proxxon table which lets me cut through foam even 6" thick like butter, and accurately and cleanly. If you are serious about building with foam, the Proxxon table is a MUST have and absolutely worth the cost. It's not even that much more expensive than the HFF one, which is annoying for people like us that paid for those first. Good luck!
@chrisl.4930
@chrisl.4930 8 жыл бұрын
Ah ha! Guess I should have mentioned that they don't sell 1/2" insulation foam in my area unfortunately. The closest I can get to that is 3/4" which is still a bit too thick for my liking. Oh darn! Well at least I can say I'm not the only one who bought the foam factory one and can't get all the usage they want out of it. Ugh, yeah that fence is a pain. Seems no matter how much I tighten it down so that it doesn't move (in theory), I can still nudge it a bit and as I'm sure you know, is not acceptable. Hmm, I will have to check out this Proxxon table you speak so highly of. I mean that's pretty impressive that it can cut foam that thick and as accurate and clean as you say. Definitely gonna look this up. Thank you for the reply, definitely helps and I will definitely be around to watch more of your awesome work!

Hey! I love your videos, they've been very helpful. I have bought some of that pink craft foam but it's far too thick to be used for anything conveniantly. How do you cut it down to a more workable size thickness, like you mentioned previously?
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
Honestly the only way to mill down material to different thickness, and do it well, is to use a hotwire table. And I will tell you that the one by Proxxon is the one you want. It is worth every penny. I first owned the entry level one by hotwire foam factory, which cost about 1/3 of the price of the proxxon and it was a big waste of money.
@zecron8
@zecron8 8 жыл бұрын
What makes the Proxxon one so much better? The hot wire foam factory one is within my price range a bit more, and I'd prefer to save my wallet if I can. That being said, I can shell out a bit more money if it's absolutely not worth buying compared to the Proxxon one.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
The hotwire foam factory one is a waste of money...it literally can NOT make most of the cuts the proxxon one can, and when it can make the cut it does so very slowly and poorly. The HWFF one has a wire that is way too thick and does not get nearly hot enough. The proxxon one has an incredibly fine wire and a variable temperature that can get the wire red glowing hot and can cut through 6" foam like butter....the HWFF one struggles to cut through 1/2" material. It's almost useless. Not to mention the fact that the proxxon actually has usable fence and slide for cross cuts, and can cut bevels, and comes with like 100' of wire on a spool...HWFF is one length of wire that if it breaks you have to order replacements. Buying the HWFF one is throwing away good money for nothing, you are better off waiting until you can get the proxxon one...trust me, I really wish I didn't wast money on my first one. I'm planning on doing a side by side comparison of the two, it will blow your mind.

This is amazing! I was wondering. You were talking about maybe build some more walls or other parts for this, would you be able to get the paint job in the same way? That is my problem, to recreate stuff.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
To be honest that is part of the reason I havnt gotten around to doing more, I'm not sure I can get them the same. If I do make them and they don't match I would probably do a quick repaint of the original if I had to.

Yea, I've done a lot of LED lighting effects using bits from dollar store stuff, but I'm really looking to do some finer work with smaller and more efficient parts, it will allow me to conceal stuff in much smaller spaces, and more cleanly.

I'm looking to actually build this myself. I've got the foam and such. I can 'guess' at the dimensions of it by how you built it. But I don't know the height of the faces of the tower. I figured one pair would be 9.5 cm, the other pair would be 7.6cm due to trying to get it to fit around a 3 inch by 3 inch base. Maybe 6 or 8 inches tall?

Hey. Bloody love your work! It's probably already detailed somewhere but Could I get details for the paint job on those bricks? Mine always look too uniform and these are amazing!! Plus in Australia I can't find the cheap foam core and I can't peel the good stuff. Any cheap online recommendations? Thanks ☺

I know you don't like to do insides of buildings but did you consider making the top floors removable at all to make the tower bits stackable? Like you mentioned the modular-ness of the piece for say a wizards tower. Did you just not think of it at the time or was there something you saw as being a problem later in either production, usage, stability etc?
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
The inside of those towers would be so small it would be totally pointless to have them playable. It may be worth removing the top part simply so you could stack them and make a higher tower if you wanted though.
@brianmccarthyjr2551
@brianmccarthyjr2551 4 жыл бұрын
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial yeah. that's more what I meant. I totally agree with your input about inside rooms. Any type of extra detail you put in there like furniture or what not would fill it entirely. I was askin about the stackin.

Hmm, just one minor thing I've noticed, on the technical side. Your hands appear very overexposed. The light is probably close to the piece and your skin is reflecting a lot of light to the camera, which makes it a 'lil bit hard to see what you're doing/pointing at. Dunno if moving the light away would make the whole thing too dark though, because appart from that, the lightning seems perfect on the build itself, mostly because foam is a very absorbing material.

yea....im just using a webcam, so it has it's limitations and I usually prefer the piece to look good/accurate than anything else....maybe I should wear some black gloves XD

honestly, i don't know.....there are always one or two, no matter what. would be nice if they could actually comment with some feedback. i think some people are just miserable and enjoy hitting dislike on things, because sometimes it happens minutes after an upload, before they could possibly have actually watched the whole video. oh well.
