The early mustangs don't have a vin on the dash. They have it in 3 spots on the inner fenders.

Yes, there are a lot of mustangs running around with no vins due to inner fender replacement. Think I'll talk to some friends I have at the sheriffs office and seek clarification on this 🤔

I've seen this done in collision repair jobs. We called it " clipping ". Sometimes it was the best way to save a car, weld on and entire new /used front or rear.

I did the same thing to my 70 road runner. You could walk through the center of the car. I used a rust free donor clip for the front and rear.

It may be a lot to ask, but can you do a close up of the area that you removed and also when it goes back. I will be doing a 66 coupe that was wrecked in the front end. I bought all the parts to make the back half a fastback. I also will be changing out the front end to stock or close. Believe it or not it was cheaper than finding a rusted fastback and fix it back. Watch all the time thanks.

Such a huge job. This is definitely one of those jobs where, if you have to ask, you can't afford it... I love building cars. I like the fab work, the paint and building engines, but I can't do upholstery, but I can honestly say that I'm glad I'm not doing that car.. 30 years ago I would have jumped right into it, but not anymore.

Thats how its done. I think its going to be like grandads old axe that lasted 3 generations and only had 3 new handles and 2 new heads. As the body shell moves around are you going to anchor it to the ground somehow to hold it while you line it up when fitting all the new parts? Cheers Ian

I have it on stands now and it's been leveled on the rockers side to side and front to back. Everything mounts off that baseline.

Kiwi - If you're so inclined, as you do the installation of the front clip please spend some time explaining how you ensure everything is square and true. It is something (as a "shade tree" mechanic) I have thought about. I would imagine being off by a tenth of an inch could make the car drive poorly?

Looks to me like the real trick and the real skill is keeping it in shape without the factory jigs and fixtures as you disassemble it. You do so many mustangs it might be worth your time to slap together some form of chassis alignment jig or even some plywood templates.

Just sayin . Replacement Boss 429 shock towers gives you the option of installing most Ford engines even the 427 SOHC . I don't know what the big deal is about going with a rack instead of a newer power steering gearbox ?

There's a bit more to it than just the rack and pinion. Front steer being rack or box is accepted as having better geometry than rear steer like the stock mustang. You also get double A arm suspension with anti dive built in, another big improvement. As well as no shock towers, big plus! 😎👍

This question has been raised by several people. I decided to go through the sherif and DMV to get clarification from them on how to do this correctly and legally. There are more than a few opinions being offered up but I'm going to go with what the actual authorities tell me. You guys will be the first to know when I have the real word.

It's easy to be wise after the event, but it has become obvious that what you should have done is the following: 1. Done a complete restoration on this car, with a new floorpan and chassis rails, upper and lower cowl, etc -- retaining the original VIN. 2. Built a separate new car with new body panels and the Mustangs To Fear front end. 3. Constructed a proper jig for 2, which you could have then lent out or hired out when you weren't using it.

@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 I still think that this is a "I wouldn't have started from here" situation. A 65 Mustang could legally be rebuilt from the part that you have just cut off! An inspector visiting your workshop and viewing the wreckage would identify that as representing the car.
