Never break the window of a car in the front driver seat, because there is where you most likely spend most of the time, and it's good to have it protected, i always break the passenger seat and move to the driver seat. Also i always sleep in the back seats if needed, so the zeds don't break the window in the driver seat if they get closer during the night

@@3y3aTaP If youre just looking to move the car farther than youre willing to push it, it doesnt matter which window you break. Or if youre using cars as a barricade (you can turn the zombies ability to crawl under the cars off if you want), you can just park the car with the broken window facing inward. If you plan on using the car more often, then yeah, its best to break the passenger side and find a replacement window asap.

1. The car hood works like the trunk lid, They can be repaired or replaced. 2. Tires found in buildings like mechanic shops or gas stations are usually 100% but they're deflated, make sure you have a tire pump to inflate the tires or it would just fall off when you start driving. (This confused the hell out of me because the tires just keep popping off)

A nice thing to keep in mind; often when there is a car in a driveway, you can find the key to the car in the kitchen of the house.

You can exploit this by luring zombies into that house and killing them. They should gain the house and vehicle keys in their loot pool.

@@Althairs it is a one time thing, quick way to test it is to attract hundred of zombies next to a car and kill them, tell me if you find 2 car keys for the same car

One big correction to make: You said that you don' gain exp anymore from the more remedial tasks once you level up. You still gain exp, but since the more basic tasks give only a little and the amount needed to level goes up exponentially with each level, it only seems like you don't gain exp. If you check the exp needed to next level(by hovering over the skill progress bar), before and after, you will see the gains. Also, they put a once per day per vehicle exp cap on each part, so if i have one lightbulb I can install it in a car slot and gain exp, but if i do it again and a day has not passed, then I wont gain exp. You can get around it by saving up a lot of lightbulbs and then you can walk up to a car and pick a headlight/taillight slot and install and remove all of the individual lightbulbs into that slot until you've done them all. Then go to a different car and repeat. I leveled Mechanical from 4 to 5 that way on a run with just a big stack of around 20 lightbulbs and the correct learning book. (the same exp trick works for removing and installing radios, but they are heavier so you cant carry as many, and they are car-type-specific. Standard car type cars are everywhere and you can easily build up a stack of radios to get exp from.) But having a screwdriver and cycling through a stack of lightbulbs and radios can easily get you from mechanical 0 to 2, which is most people's goal for the hotwiring.(and once you have mechanical level 2 you can use the screwdriver to disassemble all those radios to help get Electrical level 1 if you don't already have it by then.

I use the same strat. You can also go back to the main menu to reset that 1 day timer so you can level quickly with a bunch of light bulbs a car and mechanics books.

@@bobjohnson1096 EDIT: yes you can repair engines in vanilla. engine repair is unlocked at mechanics level 5, but you have to gather engine parts from other cars to get parts to do the repairs which destroys their engines down to 0%.

Tip: collect as many white lightbulbs as possible. Each lightbulb can be installed and uninstalled on a given vehicle once for mechanics xp. After that, reinstalling has no xp gain though. If you collect enough light bulbs you can keep installing/uninstalling them on multiple cars for an easy way to grind mechanics

A pretty advanced tip I just learned after 300h: you can open any door of a vehicle (if unlocked or you have the key, obviously) from the V menu and access the items in the seat from outside the vehicle. This a pretty advanced tip to hide some loot in the back seat of a random shitty car in the city in plain sight. Your welcome.

If you uninstall the locked door and then reinstall it, it's no longer locked. Have to do this all the time to gain access to trunks and the back of vans I liberate from the wilderness.

leaving a door open can also help you decrease "getting into vehicle" interaction time. which might be useful when preparing a gateway vehicle

Always hold a weapon or tool when smashing a car window or your guy will jam their elbow in there and possibly cause a major injury!

I kind of feel they should change the loudness of the vehicle to mostly the muffler, since thats what the muffler does. Muffles the sound of the engine. I also feel the with a high enough mechanic skill you should be able to install more parts. Like, TWO mufflers. That would make the car so quiet you literally couldnt tell it was on, which is very beneficial in a zomboid apocalypse.

Great video and fantastic info/tips! One that I would add is regarding smashing out windows to gain access: If you can't replace the broken window right away, it is best to smash out the passenger-side window. The reason for this is in the event you have zombies coming up to your vehicle, they can reach in through the window and hit you if the driver window is smashed out (or open), whereas I think they either cannot entirely from the passenger side or it takes longer for them to reach you.

❗ January 2022, build 41. My Mechanics skill is 4 and I still get XP from low-level activities like changing light-bulbs, removing/reinstalling batteries and radios, and also removing/reinstalling tires.

Just one note to add: Batteries doesn't necessaraly need to be replaced if you've got a battery charger and the condition of it is ok.

You can fix a battery by charging it with the battery charger

Note there's an in-game difference between battery charge and battery condition. You can see this in vehicle mechanics window by selecting the battery and looking at the info at the top of the window. You can charge a battery, but you can not repair it's condition. On the main mechanics window, the percentage shown by the battery in the list of parts is it's condition percentage and not it's charge percentage.

Quick question about the heater and the glove box, lets say you've found your new favorite vehicle, you nearly have it 100% but the heater and the glove box are the only things that aren't 100% how do you fix those/change them? Or are you just going to have to live with the fact that you will have to use your fav vehicle with those at a lower quality? And if you can't do anything with them are there mods that allow you to fix/change those two?

The answer is actually very simple. Use tailoring alongside having plenty of clothing layers. The easiest way to level tailoring is to rip up all of the clothing you can find, clean all the scraps and use the ripped sheets and thread to put patches on all your clothes. One of the best early game setups for an aspiring tailor is just to have a pair of jeans and a hoodie. That way you can stitch up the arms of the hoodie along with a long sleeve formal shirt and the actual hood of the hoodie to get early game head protection. Remember, the most common injuries to your character will always be your legs, arms, and hands. Protect the neck as much as you can however as bleeding out swiftly fro ma jugular bite can absolutely screw you. As Aluzky said though, 100% protection is possible easily but the insulation problem does become an issue. This is why the early game hoodie and jeans combo works, but don't be afraid to wear a leather jacket covered in leather strips temporarily. Because remember, being hot for a little bit and consuming more water is less deadly than a zombie bite.

Where the hell you seeing 4000 horses at? Most ive seen in a vehicle in game is 600 and those are usually modded sport or muscle cars, like the 429 mustangs, transam, chevelle, dodge chargers.

There's durability as well but it is labeled as a percentage, not hit points, but it says outright Hp: 300-600 in the vehicle mechanic menu, referencing horsepower. The comment likewise mentions diesels or whatever being powerful in the last sentence so it makes it seem like horsepower is what they are talking about.

I have a suggestion for a mini series. "How to breach the xyz." Or something like that. Top suggestions would be the Mall, the Military Base and the Country Club. Can contain topics like the benefits of taking the site, optimal entry points, equipment needed to enter and fortify the location, reasons to breach them and their overall difficulty etc.

@@SouthernN0mad No more of a zombie trap than any of the small communities TBH but it is pretty deceptive containing buildings with lots of blind corners and with odd distributions rather than the usual rural concentrations. I would compare it to the warehouses southwest of muldraugh. As for loot, mostly food and booze with some sporting goods and a lot of lockers. When cleared though it is very defensible with endless water sources and plenty of land (including a basketball court with indestructible fences around the perimeter).

Zombie hordes are separated, you usually see 20-40 zombies in one horde at most, so just kite a few out and kill them, keep doing this for few ingame days, no rush just keep clearing and thats it.

You can also find a car you don't want with you for the long run and slowly reverse drive over the zombies. It will obliterate the trunk but it's a relatively fast and safe way to deal with hordes. Just make sure your can isn't too badly damaged so you can drive away if things go south

only if it happens to be unlocked. you can replace the window if you want to keep the car. If you have high mechanic skill you might be able to remove a door, but i'm pretty sure that mechanic option is one of them that requires either the key or for you to have it hotwired.
