I think you missed the good weapons at thr survivor's house(barricaded house) at the beginning: There was a sledgrhammer(top long blunt weapon) and axe(decent axe-type weapon), which both are good melee weapon. Don't ignore any weapons & check the items thoroughly. You don't want to miss out the good stuffs from judging by the looks.
