Good job, keep it up. looking forward to seeing your test flights. Little tip: For putting servos in foam board, I like to print a sticker with the outline of the servo, apply it to the model, then cutout the outline through the sticker with a hobby knife before inserting the servo. It makes neat holes and reinforces the surface.

The biggest problem with canards is at high speed they easily become dynamically unstable
@darkmann123 жыл бұрын
thought you said canada
@JoeOvercoat3 жыл бұрын
Canard designs are inherently unstable across the speed range. Also, intentionally stalling the canard before the main wing stalls can lead to some interesting flight characteristics.
@OzAndyify3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I would have gone for a slightly longer delta and no canard. I'd also ditch the wingtip verticals and either have one larger one vertical on the fuselage, or two at about 40 degrees. I *reckon* this would be faster and better, but it ain't my camel and this guy's designs do seem to work. My experience with EDF deltas may not apply to friggin rocket planes!
@JoeOvercoat3 жыл бұрын
@@OzAndyify Yes - delta wings want vortices to align with the leading edge of high angles of attack to keep the flow attached to achieve that high angle of attack before stalling. Arguably the wing tip verticals foil that flow, no pun intended.
@OzAndyify3 жыл бұрын
@@JoeOvercoat Yeah, but tip winglets are tricky buggers to optimize at the best of times. Airliners only use them due to wingspan restrictions. Highly swept, low-aspect deltas have more spanwise stuff going on than "normal" wings, with the relative wind angle increasing towards the tips. The Leading Edge vortex effect, which only works for highly swept deltas with sharp LE, allows surprising high AOA by generating a stable vortex that effectively increases camber. It's almost a virtual top surface...similar to turbulators on STOL planes. (see Facetmobile for extreme delta lift.) They are rather gnarly to control at slow speeds and have dangerous "corners" if low, slow and underpowered. Having said that, I don't think he is aiming for minimum drag, especially on landing approach, where high AOA is likely. Looking a little bit cooler and being more draggy is probably better for this project.

Little tip to keep your hands warm, and be able to do fiddly things - Fingerless gloves, preferably 3m Thinsulate ones, I used them on the outdoor markets for years handling cash and doing small repair jobs. You will not be disappointed- they are excellent. Your hands are covered and your fingers free to work without getting cold.

Gotta say, that was a very clever pivot from using a carbon tube as the body of the rocket itself, to using a carbon tube as internal support to a wood & paper rocket body.
@_PixelVoid3 жыл бұрын
When using fibreglass or carbon fibre for strengthening. You should apply the resin first, lay down the fibre layer and then gently push the resin up through the layer. This reduces the damage to the stitching, thus making the layer stronger, and also reducing inclusions and other defects caused when adhering these layers. Doing this method over the method you used can greatly increase the strength of the fuselage. Hope this helps in future 😁
@ayrtonthompson7503 жыл бұрын
Apply a coat of resin before you lay the cloth, it makes it easier to saturate the cloth and should require less resin

It's a very heavy way of reinforcing, maybe some carbon stringers would be better? Glass is normally used with polyester resin rather than epoxy. Maybe you could consider Diolin instead of grp? It doesn't shatter. Am I the only person who thinks it looks like Fireball XL5?

Nice project! Most canard planes have zero or very little elevator mix into the ailerons/elevons, I suggest you to reduce the mix to 10% elevator and 90% aileron. As for CoG, you should aim for slightly higher wing area load for the canard than for the main wing. You no NOT want the main wing to stall before the canard wing.
@melcrose3 жыл бұрын
canards are INCREDIBLY twitchy. IF (IF IF IF IF IF IF IF) you actually nail the initial setup (it would have to be spot-on-perfect) the second you introduce movement that plane is going to do flips.

Keep building and crashing! Every crash means another build, and RC and FPV components *usually* survive for the next one. The worst thing to do IMO is to build so pretty that flying becomes stressful. "If you live, you will die, if you fly RC, you will crash" - such is life.

hey I'm a certified autobody tech in Canada, A tip for painting yellow is start with a grey/green base coat yellows pigments tend to have poor coverage and is extremely expensive when mixing your own paint so i would save some green and and it to a dark grey shade primer, it cuts the coats needed of the yellow in half. just for future and same goes for orange for your next time.

Just an FYI hot glue is generally frowned upon when you get to high powered rocketry. It's less of an issue the farther from the motor you are, but we generally prefer epoxy, 5 minute or 30 minute if you have the patience and are flying up to level 2 motors (J-L). The fiberglass helps a lot, but you might not even need it with the right adhesive.
