I was 14 in 1966 and remember both the '66 and '67 LeMans 24 hour races covered by ABC's Wide World of Sports. ABC did a 2 hour special in 1967 that I have never seen since then. At the end of 1967 Leo Levine came out with the epic "Ford, The Dust and the Glory, a Racing History". I bought that book as it went into great detail about each of the 4 years Ford had a factory effort. When Ford vs. Ferrari came out, the reviews said that Leo Beebe was cast as a villain. Nothing could have been farther from the truth. For this reason, I have refused to go see the movie.

Im sorry but, with all the respects for the majestic P4, I think that the most beautiful racing car ever made (by Ferrari as well) was the unlucky original 1969 312 P Berlinetta before the rear lip was added at the center and one at each side in '70 by NART. A prototype just forged by wind, a simple yet breathtaking line, like a red marble sculpture of speed itself.

The 330 P4 is arguably one of the best Ferrari prototypes ever built. The stories of Ford & Ferrari at Le Mans in the 60's always underestimate how magical the P4 truly was as a race car since Ford always won.

I liken it to Dodge's decision to cram superchargers in their Challengers and Chargers. It sent a jolt throughout the automotive industry, shocking them out of their complacency and revolutionized just about every manufacturer, into not just producing more and more powerful muscle cars, but performance vehicles are virtually every stripe you can imagine. Could cars like the modern Supra, the C8 Corvette and the current incarnation of the Nissan Z have existed today without the Hellcat? Perhaps, but I doubt there would be the same level of urgency, the same need to beat the hellcats without it.

That might be so, but Ford should not have let Ferrari trounce them so convincingly on home soil in 1967. Daytona was no backwater race, it had prestige and WSC status, and one of very few 24H races. I remember this from '67. I've never been so happy as I was then to see Ferrari putting not one, but three over the US 'just throw money at it' philosophy. Remember at the previous year's Le Mans, it took 7 litres of Ford to defeat a mere 4 of Ferrari. Ferrari - artistry; Ford - brute force. FORZA FERRARI.

The true story is tha Ford, after their triumph in 1966 managed to win Le Mans (the greatest race of them all) in 1967, 1968 and 1969 despite the fact that the Europeans banned Fords mighty FE427R

You win some, you lose some. Ford’s winning of the La Mans in 66 is a great story as well as their many additional successes, but ultimately Ford had to prove itself against Ferrari. It goes without saying that Ferrari has a proud tradition of victory in motorsports. They have nothing to prove.

MrKnoxguy101, Ford set out to beat Ferrari at their own game and did it.
