I bought the Honda many years back when it was the EU2000.....it lasted 4 years. Then the valve got stuck in the valve guide, Fixed that then the wires all fried. Bought the predator after that....after 4 years still running. only had to replace the pull cord. stull running almost 8 years later. IDK it was cheaper and worked almost the same. Also the predictor ran equipment the honda would not run. so I think the Predator is a much better value I would never waste my precious money on a Honda again.

Love this channel! You've saved me from making some bad purchase decisions over the last couple of years. Also, as a vibration analyst, it's nice to see that you're testing and reporting on vibration levels on many types of equipment. Just a suggestion, but consider integrating the overall acceleration levels to overall RMS velocity. It's a better gauge of human-sensed vibration because velocity is not dependent on frequency. Acceleration measurements are amplified in the high frequency range, but velocity doesn't suffer from this limitation. It's a better model for human perception of vibration levels. Keep up the amazing work!

Could you explain what the dirty electricity means? Is it just not a proper polarity change within the certain frequency?
@alfredotovar8984 Жыл бұрын
I too would like to know 🤔
@IronArmPanda Жыл бұрын
@@alfredotovar8984 It means the frequency is either too high or too low and the voltage has too much variation. I'm guessing the cheapies are using cheap components and less than stellar invertor circuits. There's also probably missing filtering circuits like what the Honda has. Alot of newer electronics will not have a fun time on a generator with too much variation under load.
@ryanjay6241 Жыл бұрын
@@IronArmPanda Actually, it's quite the opposite. Most "newer electronics" are the ones that will suffer least from bad sine waves. Anything with an SMPS (computers, phone chargers, etc) have no problems operating at anything between 40-80hz and really don't care how clean the power source is. "Older" electronics or things like amplifier that often still have linear supplies will be more heavily affected. Most likely anything with a motor as well.
@Bassguitarist1985 Жыл бұрын
@@imkaneforever dirty electricity means two things. Here in the USA we have 60 Hertz and 120/240 volts. The first aspect of dirty electricity is called total harmonic distortion. This basically means there are voltages present at the higher harmonics so we can have 30 volts at 120 Hz or 15 volts at 240HZ. These voltages are basically not doing anything to power the load but instead create waste heat which can shorten the life of electronics. The utility grid states that you will never see anything beyond 5% harmonic distortion. That's considered very clean. Portable generators non-inverter type can have harmonic distortion as much as 20%!!! Most low-power switch mode power supplies are tolerant of high THD because they are overbuilt to handle the excess heat. Make no mistake though over time high THD will cause these devices to fail. The second aspect of dirty electricity is RFI. This is especially present on inverter type generators. It's basically the same as harmonic distortion but at a much smaller voltage at a much higher frequency somewhere in the 20k to 50khz region typically. The noise comes from the transistors turning on and off very quickly in order to approximate the sine wave that we would normally find in our house outlets from the grid. This on/off action creates the RFI noise. Normally there are filtering components added at the inverter output to keep the level of this interference noise below certain established industry limits called FCC 15. Sometimes this could cause problems with some electronics. There is always going to be some of this RFI on inverter generators even with proper filtering and can be heard with high quality audio devices. There are filters that you can buy however to make this noise go away pretty much.

Been in the Water Blaster industry for a few years... Flow rate is negligible in a hose... the important things is that the ends have not been over crimped (and even then that often doesn't affect output flow/pressure, but will increase pressure of the hose at low pressures (like when using a large "soaper" nozzle to use the detergent venturi (often built in with a cheap machine. The venturi requires a high pressure on the pump side and a lower pressure on the output side (to create a vacuum on the output side that sucks the detergent in through a non return valve at the end of the plastic pickup hose... restrictions in the hose can act like a nozzle which can increase the pressure in the hose enough that the venturi ends up with the same pressure on either side.. so no vacuum, no soap. (This is why you have to use the "black" nozzle on QC nozzle units to get soap... and thin hose (usually 1/4" (measured in ID not OD) hose) does effect the low pressure)... 3/8th (industrial standard) can run up to about 30m long before pushing all that water through ends up leveling out that pressure either side of the venturi again... I personally hate venturi's. Spray and walk away.. then pressure wash later!)

The 2000i actually DOES have an hour meter. It tells you, in code, by flashing lights when you first start it (on the panel). Count the number of flashes, and that's how many hundred hours it has run. This is a little known trick that can help you find a smoking deal on a used 2000i with low hours. Also, learn which model numbers are made in Japan (another thing the average person doesn't know how to find) I got one with 200 hours for $400.

900+ hours on a Predator 3500 inverter generator and still running like a top. Been used a lot and the there are some tricks I've learned to get it this far. 1. Most important there is a air vent tube right at the top of the fuel tank. Make sure to not fill fuel above that intake or it will drain into the charcoal filter and stall out. 2. Make sure to add a vent to fuel cap or back off when tightened a half turn while in use. So it does not create a vacuum and starve the engine for fuel. 3. Change oil every 40 hours with a top off at 20-30 hours. Use good oil. 4. Change the spark plug to a high quality one. In all honesty 1 and 2 will be your most common issues. Hopefully this helps someone out there.

A note on the fuel efficiency tests - the Honda was producing a higher voltage than the other two, so while it ran out of gas earlier in some of the tests, it may have actually produced more energy (a resistive load, like the space heater or halogen lamp, will use more energy when operated at a higher voltage). You may want to consider using the kill-a-watt meter kwh output to compare energy efficiency in future tests. Thank you for all the great work you publish.

126.5V seen on the Honda is surprisingly high, I would be concerned if the public utility was supplying their power at that level as they normally come in at 119, much closer to the 120V. I would have expected better regulation from the Honda but maybe that's the reason they are more able to start high inrush current devices, because they go overvoltage on the output regulation. I'd prefer regulation to the same voltage from the mains instead of the boosted value all the time, as that's the design voltage for the appliances.

I prefer fuel shut off valves separate from the run switch, as opposed to those integrated ones that only allow them to be on or off together. Use has ranged from outdoor projects like building cedar fence using a variety of power tools, to whole house backup during multi-day power outages. (Safely doing the latter involves turning off the breaker mains, and then turning on critical lines and watching the current draw). It has never failed to start within two pulls, has yet to require a repair, and looked new this fall after I washed the unit. Especially for this kind of tool, how long your own use-life expectation is a major factor. Our unit has certainly exceeded our expectations, and I suspect the Honda will out live me!

Someone else has said it already. But for me personally I would like to see duel fuel generators that can run on propane as well as gasoline. I have a Honda 2000 EU generator that I've owned for many years. It's been an excellent machine. Never let's me down. Back then it cost around $900, but I believe it was worth the money.

EU2000i. I have one of those and paid around that so we likely got them at a similar time. It really came in handy for The Great Texas Freeze in 2021. We don’t as yet have a whole home generator. I only thought I’d need a generator for hurricanes. I knew I could run a refrigerator, a freezer, or a coffee pot with it. What blew my mind was it ran our large Breville toaster oven. It was wonderful having hot home made pizza while freezing our butts off. When you really need it to deliver, the Honda does.

@@kevingray8616 -- A word of advice, install a wood heating stove!! Maybe even a wood cooking stove. I have both including an outdoor rock fire pit with implements and cast iron for cooking. If the power goes out here, and it has, I'm warm and can cook, boil water, etc. Oh, a good supply of beeswax candles, candle lanterns, and kerosene lanterns are a good idea as well. I'm not a "prepper" in the normal terms, but I don't trust what's going and I don't trust utility companies. Besides, I live remote and always take precautions..........

@@ironcladranchandforge7292 My house doesn’t lend itself to that. I do have a propane lit wood fireplace and we used that to stay somewhat warm. The problem is that we have an open floor plan with soaring ceiling. Normally it is amazing. Just too much area to heat using a fireplace. Since the freeze I do keep 30 gallons of water in stackable containers. (in addition to some bottled water) That came in handy when the well pump failed on a weekend. I also have propane and some propane cookers; not to mention charcoal and a kamado grill. Like my neighbors I hope to put in a generator one day.

Have a Honda 3000 for the last 20 years. Has run the whole house (no a/c of course) on multiple occasions, really showed it's value for two days during hurricane Helene recently. Only issue is keep a spare spark plug handy. Fantastic equipment that starts on the first pull every time.. Cheers

I think you should have also compared the weight and size of each generator (dry and wet) as well and compared their full tank endurance. The Honda also has a significantly larger displacement engine (125cc vs 80cc on the other two), which could explain why it did better with heavier loads. Also a little more subjective of a test, but comparing replacement part availability and pricing could be interesting. Nice video!

As always, an excellent and informative comparison. I was glad to see the noise comparisons. Especially important is the distance from the meter. A flat dB rating is meaningless without an associated distance. Every doubling of the distance results in a 6dB drop in the sound level. Regarding the muffler, the size measurements taken were only in length and width, without the depth being measured. While shape and internal baffles can make a difference, the internal volume can make a huge difference in noise attenuation. But a large contributor can also be mechanical noise once the muffler becomes very effective, and that is why the quieter generators usually have a full enclosure and soft engine mounts. The oil analysis results were an eye opener! I thought maybe it would be good to flush the crankcase and do a second run, just in case some of the aluminum and/or iron were the result of a normal break in, or even left over manufacturing artifacts. Keep up the good work!!

Years ago we did brushes on starter generators on business jets and after sanding the brushes to match the shaft we would run them in a cage for 12 hours to set them. I doubt any company takes the time these days. Do the run in on the first flight!

Great video as always. One important item that is impossible to check is that cheaply made items have very poor quality control when they are built. A cheap generator can preform adequately for a short time until it starts vibrating apart. I have used a few junk items that just fall apart, usually on the inside and suddenly don't work at all.

I'd like to see a longer term test on these generators. Especially the Genmax and Pred. Maybe at hour markers 250, 500 and 1,000. The oil test comments suggested not much to worry about as the wear metals tend to show up during break in hours. At $350 or so the Genmax seems a huge deal on price.

I've owned one of the older version Honda EU2000i generators, and it's been flawless. IMO, besides the generator putting out clean electric is parts availability. Other than Honda, most of the knock-off generators are here today, gone tomorrow, so when it breaks, toss it and get another one. Your neighbors must love it when you have a yard sale. You've got the coolest stuff that's always being upgraded. Well done.

Thank you very much for this informative comparison! Since I live in an area where power outages are more common than I'd like, the only thing I need to keep powered are my refrigerator and standalone freezer and the water pump to pump water through my house (all these devices together should pull under 1800W max), so I went with the Genmax GM2200i because use will be occasional at best and although the Honda is nice, the Genmax is better from a price-to-performance ratio, and that's my best takeaway from this awesome comparison.
