Not surprised the POR-15 ran away with this one, it's legendary among us old-car enthusiasts. Rust never sleeps! Love your testing methodology, too. As a metallurgical engineer, I've done some work with the SAE J2334 cyclic corrosion test. You might take a look at it and incorporate some element of wet/dry cycles if you ever do longer term corrosion tests in the future.

@ProjectFarm so if using on a car say I get the por 15. I would still need to use a primer over top, and then paint of course and finally clear coat to be used on painted surfaces is this correct? I see many people saying need to sand down and use bondo and sometimes metal filler. But on my car the rust isn't that severe. The paint is only beginning to bubble and very slightly crack in small spots. So I feel sanding would be a bad option

Last fall I "restored" my 2008 F-250 instead of buying a new truck. Essentially I removed the bed, cut out and replaced bed rails, cut out rot on the wheel wheels and replaced that, cut out and replaced cab corners and parts of the inner rockers and then repainted the truck. After doing this I sprayed the underside of the cab with Chassis Saver which is a product very similar to POR15 and then sprayed fluid film. I sprayed the entire underside of the cab in fluid film over the Chassis Saver paint and the underside still looks great after a salt filled Northern winter. I used fluid film because it is only like $30 a gallon. I used the gun too so I could spray all inside the rockers and through the bed rails. Obviously as you know nothing will totally stop rust. I am basically trying to get my truck to last another 5-7 years before buying a new one. Frequent coats of fluid film over the chassis saver is what I am trying and so far it seems good. I will be putting another coat of fluid film on in fall before the winter again. Once the coat is on it looks like cosmoline is coating the entire underside. It never really dries and is more like a light grease than anything.

Testing of the products (especially shop items) is great. Oils, paints, welders, tools ... Probably the high quality brands like Rust Oleum do test their products. In the past I worked for a large chemical company, and they did extensive testing of paints and coatings in lab. They even had an outdoor testing area. They would put samples out there for years at a time like in a matrix of panels. You are reproducing that kind of testing on a practical level, its very useful for consumers.

I Used Por 15 on a light duty dump truck dump bed with great, awesome results. All did was use a powered wire wheel to remove light rust, cleaned the bed with compressed air and then wiped down with a degreaser, cleaner and allowed to dry well. I spread the Por 15 very thin with a brush and roller and shockingly it held up very well to loads of Class five rock, gravel bing dumped on it. I will be doing the same project afain with another dump truck next week using Por 15 again. If POR 15 gets on your skin its almost impossible to remove, trust me..

Thanks for the great videos! Moved into my house in 2000. House had steel Bilco doors into basement (12 year old house). Bilco's had original primer but had never been painted. They were rusted bad enough to where I looked into replacing them. Decided to paint with POR-15 and topcoat with Rustoleum paint. It's now been 23 years since I POR-15'd them and they are in great condition. I do repaint them every 6 or 7 years. The POR-15 just locked up the rust and they look better now then they did 23 years ago. Good Product! I also used it to treat the bottom of my Toyota Sequoia, Toyota's are rust bombs if you live in the snow belt.

Yeah, I am somewhat concerned by that. It is almost like we are not understanding the point of these rust converters and are testing them against criteria that is unfair. I am not saying I THINK that is the case, just wondering if people with more wisdom than me could posit a test that would have left the paint at the bottom.

Or... the fact is whatever coating the rust is "converted into" is just poor and there is no fixing a poor material coating. Which makes me think that POR-15 just adds something like plastic truck bed liner as a protectent.
@carlfesser6673
@carlfesser6673 3 жыл бұрын
Paint is a great sealer. This test was more about preventing future rust, less about converting existing, so you're right that it didn't necessarily test the intent of the products. A test that showed the performance of a paint that says all rust must be removed prior to application would have better shown whether the products actually neutralized the existing rust.

I did the bottom of my 90 Cavalier Z24 with that back around 2005. Red rusty metal primer with black enamel after a fairly complete sandblast ( on my back masked up the ugly way.). Undercoat sprayed after . By the next winter it was ugly with rust worse than before. I’d used rust oleum for many years prior to their taking the lead out of it with great results. Nowadays I annually spray the base and tape door drains let soak with 2” deep mix of used ATF / bar n chain oil and cheap petroleum jelly. It’s messy but seems to stop rust in its tracks as well as can be expected even in areas that can’t be gotten at . Beyond that all you can do is move south because the rust always wins in the end

As others have mentioned, the can of POR 15 will cover a lot of area. A lot of the weight in the spray products is propellant, so I would bet there is much less total coverage for any of the spray products. Perhaps weighing the cans before and after application would provide useful comparative data about the cost per application, or an estimate on total area that can be covered with each product.

I've used POR-15 a number of times, it's basically liquid plastic. Using it on the frame of my truck here in NY I guess it's worked as well or better as anything. When it finally starts to let go and peel it peels off in thick, heavy flexible pieces. It probably is the best of the bunch, but years later when rust starts showing again and you go to recoat, you're going to have your work cut out for you trying to get the old stuff off.

There's no stopping, only slowing. One thing that has to be made more apparent with all rust control products is that coating it with something will NEVER be a 100% solution. The only real fix is to media blast it down to bare metal and coat it fresh.

There is a product available in quart cans called “Ensign 335A Metal Preservative”. Once when at an auto parts store I was going to buy a POR product, but then I saw this stuff sitting next to it, and it was way cheaper so I tried it. It is a very thick sticky liquid that I would imagine is best put on with a brush. I believe it originated as a paint for steel-bottom watercraft. I think it may be creosote-based, e.g. coal tar. I have used it on numerous projects, but what comes to mind is a wheel barrel and the bottom of lawn tractor mower decks. I only removed loose rust first as surface prep. I cannot remember using a primer. I must have painted these items 20 years ago, and still use them extensively. The wheelbarrow sits out in the rain uncovered everyday (upside-down, but I painted the bottom, too.) Nothing I’ve painted with this product has ever developed any rust, or chipped off. This stuff is unbelievable. If you 😊get it on your hands and fail to use solvent to remove it, or it will have to wear off. You really should try this stuff along the other brands of rust preventatives the next time you test again. Thank you for the excellent content. Always the best.

Berkley has videos on knot strength. Basically, if you're using a braid you use a palomar or modified palomar knot, and every one of them will exceed the test rating. If you're using a mono or flourocarbon, use a trilene knot and you'll exceed the test rating. I have used many, many lines. I've had some I loved for their strength and abrasion resistance, but they wind knotted and were a pain when trying to cast on windy days. Mono that worked amazing for a few months, then took a set and turned into a big ball of shit trying to go through the guides. I have it narrowed down to just a few that stay in the boat now. Sensation in 6,8,10 lb for various size spinning reels and leader. Basic standard fireline in 6 and 10 lb for various size reels. 30lb braid for the baitcasters that I'll be using to flip and drop in trees and heavy weeds. And lastly 10-12lb flourocarbon for leader material if you need that weightless plastic worm to jig slower, or you can't get away from those slimey pike.

The coating eventually breaks down and allows rust to form after a 2-3 years.

Impressive. This is one of the few videos where the most expensive product is in fact also the best at its job. And what a difference it is, POR-15 was actually fantastic in every test. They managed to back up their claims. Though some of the other brands did an admirable job, and make for a really good alternative if budgets must.

I’ve only ever used Rustoleum before, like 20 years ago. It was the high temp version for a grill. Think it was $6 back then. It did a great job overall. Always appreciate these videos and the information they provide.

I've been using POR15 on the bottom of my cars for a few years now and it's holding up very well to the Wisconsin winters and salt.

I used Rust-Oleum on a jeep hatch that was rusted out after patching it up and using bondo to smooth it out. Still no rust 1 year later and I'm pretty impressed because it was just a budget fix to try and slow it down atleast. For the price it really is awesome stuff. Love your videos by the way. Thanks for all your hard work!

I used Sems Rust Seal (not Rust Mort) which converts rust and provides a permanent seal which can be primed over or left uncovered on a pretty rusty Datsun Roadster. That was 30+ years ago and it has never come back... amazing.

Most people don’t realize the importance of hawthorns: Rust-Oleum's headquarters are at 11 Hawthorn Pkwy.,in Vernon Hills, IL, the Beach Boys grew up in Hawthorne CA, and the Wright Brothers lived on Hawhorn Street in Dayton OH. and later moved to Hawthorn Hill in Oakwood.

I've been looking forward to this test! I use POR15 for many automotive applications, from coating a gas tank to floor pans and the back side of panels. POR15 gas tank treatment requires removing loose rust, washing (their special solution) followed by etching (POR15 product) and finally the POR15 gas tank coating. It's amazing stuff - very durable and does a great job protecting. I've seen the results when people use other products. POR15 works the best and even though it's on the expensive side, the protection it provides is worth every penny. Thanks for the video - I'm so glad to see the results.

Think it will work on fenders that keep starting to rust no matter how many times the body man keeps "fixing" it?
@gregkimura5906

@@jamesnm21 I'm in the auto industry and the only way to properly fix rust is to cut it out and weld new panels in. You can delay the inevitable by coating both the back and outside of the panel with a rust converter (POR 15). It'll definitely slow down the rust. If your body shop uses a quality part, which is galvanized on the back, then does a good job installing and painting, you should get years of use from the part. The key is to make sure there are no exposed places where the rust can start - most times this is on the back of the panel or at the edge or screw/bolt hole. I grew up in Chicago and boy do I remember how quickly cars rusted. In fact, a couple years ago, I was on a cross country drive and I saw the rust damage to cars in Ohio and Indiana - very bad! Good luck and let us know how POR 15 works for you.

Nothing will stop rust permanently. I've had good luck with a 3 step process. After removing loose rust then washing, rinsing and allowing to dry I apply 2 coats of rust converter. Next day I apply 2 coats of por 15. Next day I add 2 coats of rustoleum paint. I live in an area where winters can be harsh and a lot of salt gets sprayed on the roads. I try to hit the car wash fairly regularly in the winter. Every other year I add another 2 coats of por 15 then another 2 coats of rustoleum paint to the areas I've already worked on. I've been doing that for 12 years and my old vehicle has held up pretty well.

THANK YOU!!! Because of your extensive testing, I bought the complete kit from POR-15 that includes their degreaser ( to be used first for greasy/dirty surfaces ), metal prep solution ( to be applied after the degreaser, this 2nd treatment literally etches the surface of bare metal, painted and/or rusty surfaces, to prep the surface even better for the final POR-15 coating ), and finally: the POR-15 of course. This kit is enough to do the entire frame under my 2000 Tacoma 4x4. I ordered this 3-step kit directly from POR-15, and after applying their discount coupon code that knocked off $15.29, my grand total shipped was $98.91. I'd say this is a fair price to pay to treat & coat my entire truck frame, and judging by your extensive testing in this video, I can be assured this will indeed be "PERMANENT". Thanks again!!!
