Will Annual Oil Change Damage Your Car? Let's find out!

Does waiting a full year to change motor oil damage your car if it has not yet reached the oil change interval for miles or hours? Do you need to change oil sooner than a year if your car has not yet reached the recommended miles for an oil change? Two engines with oil over one year in the crankcase tested to determine if the oil was still good or if it had become corrosive. Oil tested by Project Farm and by an independent oil testing lab for moisture content, total base number, contamination, acidity, and overall condition. The oil in both engines had not yet reached the oil change interval for miles/hours. Recommend following the manufacturers oil change interval guidelines for miles and length of time for your car.

You should still change it every 3,000 miles if it is conventional oil, or 5,000 if synthetic, but you don’t need to change it every 3-6 months. Still change it based on operating miles. Dealerships will tell you more miles, but more than about 5,000 can cause damage, longer term.

I do agree on determining the oil change based on the driven miles. The only thing more accurate would be to have an hour meter! I think that the 1 year thing is probably a fairly good estimate on the milage on a regular daily driver in a year being close to the 5000km mark. Just guessing at stuff!

jenny I am a mechanic, it will not hurt your car to do it at 3,000 but if it is a newer car it is wasteful cars, like people need more care as they age, an average car will be ok with 7,000 miles until you hit about 70,000 miles then you should shorten it, over 100,000, 3,000 miles will keep it going, also the more miles you have, go up on the viscosity

This is plain uninformed. In short, some engines are "dirty" and some "clean". Any mechanic worth his salt can come up with some horrible examples. Frequent oil changes are cheap insurance given what a rebuild costs nowadays. Also, the constant hammering the oil suffers shortens the oil molecules and makes it less capable to resist high pressures in particular between the cams and the followers. I enjoyed a lot of interesting and well carried tests on this channel. But this is not one of those....

Do a Blackstone oil test. It's cheap. The report comes back with advice about if going longer is better. You might find that 2-year changes are safe. Someone actually analyzed a collection of anonymized Blackstone data and found that frequent oil changes actually produced more wear than than infrequent (until you reach the point the oil is so degraded that it begins to cause wear). The person doing this analysis wasn't sure why that pattern of new-oil wear was in the data. It could have been new oil dislodging contaminants which caused wear before being trapped in the filter? It was interesting that "more" isn't better that way. Changing every 3 months (which some "severe" schedules call for even when low miles) was worse than going a full year. A car's warranty is one thing to keep in mind. If it calls short-trip driving "severe," and you find through your own oil analysis that you can go 12-18 months between changes without any signs of degradation... you could find yourself in a tough spot if you have a warranty claim. You'd think the analysis reports would stand as proof. But, some car makers will use anything to get out of a claim. So, saving a little on oil changes might not be worth the fight, and voiding a warranty.

Fun story. I work as a parts salesman and an old timer would make the trip to the store every 6 months or so to pick up parts and a lot of oil for his shop and haul it back up north in his late 90s f150. He overheard us talking about needing an oil change and mentioned that hes never changed his oil in his truck for the last 15 years. I asked him to elaborate and he said that he drills small holes in the bottom of the oil filter to slowly drain out oil and he tops it up every few days so he always has fresh oil. I laughed thinking it was a joke and the other guy working with me has known the older gentleman for 30+ years assured me that hes telling the truth. So after the old guy pays up and left i took a look where he was parked and sure enough there was a little bit of fresh oil on the ground. seems crazy to me but that truck has made thousands of kilometers in terrible northern road conditions and weather without ever changing the filter or oil.

This was such good news to hear about oils being good after 12 months. My fiancé drives a 2004 Toyota Camry only about 3000 miles every year. It is driven at least once or twice a month so the oil gets up to temp periodically. We keep the battery charged with a CTEK charger as well. I didn't do the oil change for nearly 21 months when we hit 5000 miles and the maintenance required light came on. This tells me the oil will be good for the time that we drive between oil changes. Changing your oil only once per year is okay if you don't drive a vehicle. For those of us who do, please don't let what this person thinks dictate your oil change schedule. You change it when the oil is spent. You can see by the color, viscosity and texture. Dark brown, non-see through, slight smell. Change it. Don't need to look at the odometer. That oil will stay tan and see through for a few decades if left in the garage, so the amount of time matters little. Each engine is different. Oil types are different. Some have older seals that allow blow by and burning of oil will require more frequent oil changes due to the amount of particulate in the oil. Once that particulate count gets too high, the viscosity decreases, and that same amount of oil is not as effective. It's easy to tell in 2 steps. 1. Find oil dipstick 2. if oil is black, change it.

Billy Darley I doubt pennies on the dollar, employees, robots & real estate aren't cheap, add in electricity, packaging and loading time, unloading of material time, Sales, Billing and Distribution cost. There's ( a lot ) more to it than most realize. The more employees you have the more liability you have and more management is needed. To run and sustain a successful business ( long term ) is a very fine balance. Build the business too big and too fast you run into other problems as-in Flooding the market & artificial demand. Artificial demand creates other problems as-in, too much invested in inventory to meet demand and the Real Estate to house it all. Too much inventory is never a good thing.

I am a retired Heavy Mechanic, Used to work for Greyhound Bus lines in The Calgary Alberta shop [500 buses] we began testing synthetic oils on Select Buses in 1978, the wintertime in Calgary would require the Buses to be running 24hours a day, even when parked, due to extreme freezing temps., as you can imagine, these buses would go through Extreme duty most of their service life. What we found through much testing and Laboratory back up, The Oil did not break down at service intervals. The Filtration was the Issue. We found that Changing the filters [oil and Air} on a more frequent basis, e.g. Skip every other oil change but change out Filters, was giving Satisfactory results. Whether it was Natural or Synthetic did not matter. End result: Change your filters more often, and don't worry about the Oil as much, since filtration is the key. I have always run my vehicles on this method ever since and have never suffered any negative consequences. Kinda makes you think, Why the service manuals instruct us to change the oil every XXX Miles or Klms. So save your Money on Oil, and Change your Filters Often. Thanks for all your Vids, And i wish you and yours, the very best of the season. Al

Well, spark plugs actually wear, as In the power electrode and ground strap actually start to lose material and the spark gap increases causing the coil to work harder to jump the gap until it can no longer make the jump, then you will start to notice hard starting an missing. Age for a spark doesn't really make any difference unless corrosion starts to set in from it not being used.

You dont want a new truck. Today's diesels are so choked up they cant outlast a gasser anymore. That truck you have is one of the better ones. When you need the transmission rebuilt, have the "Transgo shift kit" installed at that time. That will bullet proof your transmission. Cat and Peterbilt got out of the OTR builds because the new epa requirements made it so their engines can no longer meet their reliability standards. The EPA has pretty much killed the light duty diesel. In time you will see. It's not here yet, but it's here. The new large gas 8.0 and 7.3 liter engine are being introduced should be some sort of indication of what's to come.

Basically pretty much every industrial, earthmoving, or heavy duty machinery has oil changes based on engine run time. Fleet vehicles (trucking, taxi, buses, etc) that see much more severe duty than personal vehicles ever will also have very different requirements because they'll actually test their oil. Only in consumer automobiles, specifically in the USA, do you find this huge oil change culture and an entire industry of quick-change oil chains pushing all this ridiculous nonsense. You don't see any of this in Europe or Asia (it exists to a lesser extent in Canada). "But it's cheap insurance. Uncle Joe changed his oil every 3,000 miles and his car lasted over xxx,xxx miles!" Yeah, and you can change your oil every 1,500 or 500 miles, and change your gear oil, regrease all your zerk fittings, swap out your radiator coolant, and flush our your brake fluid, all done every 2 months. That's even better insurance, using the argument of needless preventative maintenance. It's the same thinking that gets people to put 91/93 octane into their car because they think there's a premium fuel benefit and "cheap insurance" even if they drive a car that doesn't need the additional octane rating for knock protection on a lower compression engine.

@@rawbacon Did you just equate anecdotes with empirical evidence? The oil change industry is a uniquely American consumer automobile phenomena that exists nowhere else in the world. You can change it every 500 miles if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy. These intervals existed back when you had little files you pull out of the glove box to sharpen the points on your distributor, carburetors, chokes, bias ply tires, and no seatbelts. Anyone can send out an oil sample for analysis and get back a detailed report, so you know the level of of metals and contamination in the oil. Of course, you'll never hear an oil change chain or dealership suggest you actually do it.

You tested synthetic oil, but maybe mineral oil degrade faster over time ? I think that's where that "myth" come from. Where I live, every garage will put semi-synthetic oil, so just be aware of that. Personally I always put 100% synthetic oil. I asked myself the same question about oil degradation with intensive usage (with the bike that I use on track). A lot of track riders change their oil every 2 to 6 days of riding, I think that's overkill, but I'm not sure about it. I keep changing my oil every year even if I only do half the recommended distance by the manufacturer, but I don't know how track riding affect oil quality, it would be interesting to test my oil one day...

While the oil may have life in it, the danger is sludge buildup which can only be seen/measured by popping the valve covers. This is something that kills the Ford Triton 3valve motors. Even though you could be keeping under the mileage and oil analysis says its good, a removal of valve covers often reveals buildup that will kill modern engines due to their small oil passages

I, too, have worked for a lubricant oil factory, and it's pretty amazing how much the different oils are the same. Four different 5W-30s, but basically all of them identical. They might use one adative or the other, but the bases are the same. Speaking with the chemists there (QA chemists, not development chemists), they shrugged when I asked why I should choose the one oil over the other. All of the measured data were basically within each others' tolerances. They didn't want to say that they guarantee that they're the same, but they couldn't understand why an engine would suffer or last longer using the one 5W-30 over the other. OEM-labels were also fun. They didn't claim to do something different than the base-label, but they always used more "creative" language to upsell you on their oil.... that's exactly identical to the other.

It's funny for me as an European that Americans change their oil so frequently (3k miles). Either you have terrible engine manufacturing tolerances or it's a scam to make you buy more oil, or some of you are old enough to remember the good old days when oil needed changing so frequently. Modern cars in Europe have like 20k kilometers (12,5k miles?) or annually oil changing interval and are just fine after 20 years. Personally had a neglected 23 year old opel with 250k km (160k miles - it sat for like 5 years not being driven at all) on it with oil changes once a year (10-20k km depending on year ) and it didn't even burn oil, what killed it was rust. Had to scrap it last year, deemed to unsafe to drive.

Alot has to do with the fuel used. In a gas engine, the oil goes black in 500 miles due to hydrocarbon deposits (gasoline) winding up in the crankcase. Different countries run different blends of fuel. There are many other factors too, but that's for another day of discussion.

Todd, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this video today, because this is the question I asked you in the comments of a previous video! Thank you so much you made this video. This is Exactly like my case at the moment - my car oil is full synthetic at 1900 miles (3000 km) and is like yours - 17 months old. I change my oil myself because I find it satisfying experience and planned to change it in the spring when it is warmer. One day I spent a day researching the Internet whether I should change my oil around the one year mark but I could not find anything - everybody said that it should be changed once a year (for the synthetic) because it was written on the bottle... Also in the car forums was popular the opinion that the oil no longer has the lubrication properties, that it contains water/moisture, fuel and it is bad for the engine. However these were all peoples assumptions and absolutely zero tests, experiments, or facts, only opinions or writings from oil bottles. So knowing this rumors and legends I started to avoid driving my car because I false knew the engine oil is bad and I am going to damage the engine life. I drive the car couple of times a month and reaching operating temperature every time. Yes, I knew that the engine oil is not good as new, that the oil condition depends whether is city or highway driven and on other conditions. However until now I haven't seen any tests to show whether such low mile oil will ruin the engine if passed the annual change mark. So thank you so much Todd, that you myth busted this the one year mark for a low miles oil and brought light to this topic! Back in 1995 my neighbour, a little old lady, asked me to take a look at her car because it just wasn't running right and had no power. It was a 1990 civic. I took it for a quick run around the block and I agreed it had no power. Literally, you had to put the gas to the floor to get moving from a dead stop. I told her something was definitely wrong and she should take it to the shop to have it inspected. She came back a few hours later and told me the shop was trying to scam her and told her that she needed a new engine. The car had just over 45000kms on it but was past the warranty date so she would be on the hook for it. They told her it was totally worn out as though it had 10 times the miles on it. I asked her how often she changed the oil and she replied "I put oil in every time the light comes on". No kidding. For over 5 years she had NEVER had an oil change done and was STILL on the original filter. When I pulled the dipstick out to check it the bottom was so caked with sludge that it plugged the dipstick tube while being pulled out. I had to use engine degreaser to clean it to enough to even see the "add" mark. I pulled the drain plug and absolutely nothing came out. I slid the dipstick up into the pan through the drain hole until I felt it tap the crankshaft and then pulled it back out. A few drops of oil came out but the sludge was so thick and heavy it re-sealed itself. I told her she has 2 options; new car or new engine. She asked me to talk with her mechanic since she knew nothing and I asked him to put in a good used engine as it was the cheaper option. In went an engine with 50000km (5000km more than her original) and it ran like a dream. Car felt as good as new. He showed me the original and the sludge was so thick in the pan that the crankshaft had literally scrubbed a path in the sludge. Think of what it looks like when you scoop ice cream out of the carton...that's what her oil looked like. When she got home I told her that from now on she MUST take her car in every March, August and November (based on how much she drove), to have the oil changed if she didn't want to do this again. She began to complain that $20 for a lube/oil/filter 3 times a year was WAY too expensive to which I replied "Or you can spend another $2500 to replace your engine again". She remained convinced that the mechanics were scamming everyone and there is now way oil can go bad that quickly. Some people cannot learn their lesson.

I don't think it has anything to do with women being different from men as much as a cultural thing. If a woman is brought up to believe she can't do it and just isn't smart enough that has nothing to do with her natural abilities. I have 3 daughters and one of them absolutely has the mind and interest to succeed in STEM. In my job I deal with old people all the time who have convinced themselves that they "can't do it". It has nothing to do with an innate inability but that they have convinced themselves that they can't and so they stop even trying. I know some women who are amazing engineers and some men who can't even figure out how to use scissors. It's all about the individual. Now, with that said this was one woman who was definitely NOT suited for anything scientific or mechanical. :)

I still do not believe it is due to genetics but rather cultural teachings. Girls are taught right from day one that they have a specific role to play and their experiences are all based on teaching them how to be girls. Similarly for boys. I do believe that it is innate that girls are generally interested in people while boys are interested in things and this primarily stemmed from the roles each had to play in primitive societies. Girls would stay in the camp and take care of the babies and elderly and so would have to be more acutely aware of the people around them and their needs. Whereas boys would often be out hunting and having to find ways to be more effective and efficient and so would look for technological means to help achieve this. As people settled into these roles their brains changed and they settled into their specialities. From the beginning I included my girls in my "mans work" activities and while my oldest is still very "girly" she is also just as happy to go elbow deep into an engine and has had to wipe old motor oil from her armpit on multiple occasions. No complaining. If you teach someone from birth "this is what you are and what you get to do" you will limit their internal investigative processes. But if you leave the world wide open and allow them to experiment and see what they like you will find that they almost universally cross the lines between "mans work" and "womans work". My neighbour was the classic June Cleaver type housewife. She never had a job in her life. Got married right out of high school and stayed at home to raise babies and keep her house clean because she was taught this is what she existed to do. She was taught to be helpless and that there was no need to think because there was always a man who would do it for her.. yes, we ARE generally different but we are FAR more similar than most people will admit to...or even feel comfortable in thinking about. People do NOT like having their core beliefs challenged and will most will defend them to their death. not because they are correct but because to question them is to question their own existence. Wow...who would have thought that a video like this would spark such a deeply thoughtful conversation? lol Finally. The internet does something good. :)

I understand what you're saying here. I'm not set in my ways and I am in fact a very flexible person. I just work with my own experiences and observations. Show me where I am wrong and I will happily agree and thank you. but I need concrete evidence rather than feeling based opinions. As it has been said "feelings are not facts". To be honest I don't put much stock in studies as most of them are flawed from the beginning and usually are very biased. This is not something that can truly be explained or decided by studies as there really is no way to truly make the situation unbiased. I see it as no different than all the studies that tell us that eating lots of carbs and little fat is the healthy way to eat. Since the studies (mostly observational) have become prevalent diabetes and heart disease have become rampant. I trust what I see and experience for myself, not what some random "scientist" tells me is fact. My 3 girls have all had the same exposure and encouragement and all 3 have gone their own way. This is where the inherent differences you speak of come into play. But it would have been so incredibly easy to limit their options and direct them to think and feel the way that I wanted rather than to let them become the people they are and enjoy and do what they want to. Yes, girls will seem to naturally play with dolls to simulate the mothering instinct but boys do the same thing. They are just called action figures. They play with the toys to simulate and practice the roles they have observed they are "supposed" to take on. It is a complex issue and I don't believe there is a true, universal answer. Best to give people options and allow them to figure out what is best for them on their own. Tell a child their whole lives that they are ugly and stupid and that is what they will tend to believe. Tell them that "this is the best you can do" and you will generally find that is the limit they will go for. Remove the walls, boundaries and limits and let them find their own and you will be shocked at what you will see. The inflexible mind is such an incredible waste and when that in turn leads to anther's mind being clamped down it becomes a vicious cycle that leads to stagnation. Once you are convinced that "this is the best I can do" you're not going to try to do better.
