Lost or stolen... I've replaced a few items for the newer ones with better grips. It's a good problem to have but their shorter items can bite and apply so much torque that they can really hurt your hands.

I wish. I bought some used 12 inch ones. They've been welded on, so I assume the tool hardening is gone, and the teeth are completely smoothed over. If you take care of your tools, you "should" never need to replace them.

Most native native german speakers pronounce the word like "Cnippex" - the emphasis goes not on the "i" but on the "p", while the company itself emphases the "i". I like this idea, but only see acetone being a problem. As far as the metal handles, only alcohol could lead to rust of all the things you mentioned. The rubber bits are only for branding, everyone who knows anything knows that crap is useless if you are not working on electronics. Rubber = blisters

I have (2) sets of Knipex channel locks, that came with 3 each. They’ve been in daily use (especially the 10” & 12”) in our shop since 2017 and no issues with the grips from various chemicals/petroleums.

I have owned the Knipex Cobra presented here for about 40 years and have still not been able to break it. All the other Knipex pliers I own - there are many of them - have also never let me down. My oldest Knipex was given to me by my grandfather and it has served well for a good 100 years.

Very informative! I can't say I was surprised, though. There's a reason why every pliers type tool in my bag is a Knipex from wire cutters to diagonals to linemans to Cobras, all the way down to my newest favorites, the 7-1/4-in pliers wrench. As a tool geek (and a fan of Knipex...) I admit I was sitting forward in my chair and cheering as though I was watching the Olympics :D

Bought a smooth jaw Knipex after watching a different KZbinr recommended the brand. The only complaint was that you need both hands to set the jaw opening. Bought a 2-pack of Irwin (serrated jaw) at Lowe's for HALF the price of the Knipex. I like the ratcheting adjustment of the Irwin more, lets me set the size one-handed.

oh man, those pliers wrenchs are amazing! I never knew thats what they are called, I always call them parallel grippers lol. I don't use them too often, but for one very specific task, they are hands down the absolute best (and sometimes only) tool for it. the only downside is they are a little hard to adjust. For normal stuff the quick adjust of the irwin is my favorite as well.

I've been a fan of Knipex for nearly 15 years. There's a reason everyone copied their design. 8-10 years ago, they were the only pliers that looked like that. (Edit: in the USA, anyway) Great review, as always!

As a hopeless nostalgic and a proud Pennsylvanian, I LOVE Channellock Tools. But. I am seriously impressed with the Knipex and Gedore pliers, and saddened that the Channellocks didn't perform better. At least they held up well and aren't expensive. I still love them, and I'll keep owning and using them, but I'm fixing to add some Knipex and Gedore to the roster... Great video as always!

Irwin is a really decent tool brand for middle of cost, middle of quality tool range. It's kind of difficult to argue more expensive tools to them in some tool market segments in terms of cost/quality ratio. Especially with the way the tool industry is this day and age, with 99% of all tools being made in S.E.A. and China, even when legalease can allow some countries to say that "Made in" is made in their country, when it's not.

@@JosephArata Irwin seems to be the equivalent to our UK brand that is Draper. Not the most expensive but shockingly good for the money. I've got a 1/2" Draper ratchet that's about 17 years old and after releasing anything from trim bolts to head bolts and driveshaft nuts (which you really shouldn't do with a ratchet) it's still going strong.

10 years in industry tells me this is an accurate set of tests. The Knipex pliers are the best hand tool you can buy, in my opinion/experience. The results of the Irwin are equally telling....they start strong but do not last. Save your money and get something better. The Doyle brand does seem like a nice budget alternative.

This definitely reflects my own experience with knipex vs irwin vs channellock pliers. I started with a pair of channellocks because all the old guys used them, saw the knipex at menards one day and decided to try them out, and they worked fantastic, replaced all my channellocks with them. Then I saw the irwins and decided to give them a go, and within two months of daily use the teeth were all rounded out and didn't grab shit anymore. The knipex are still going strong ~6 years later

I've seen many tool reviews. Yours are the best. SUGGESTION: Oscillating multitools. There is a lot of heat here, but very little light. I've watched at least a half dozen reviews on these, but they range from "RAH, RAH! Brand Z Fanboy!" To non-systematic efforts, which, though they try, just are not what you do. Nobody appears to test them systematically as to longevity, usability, cutting ability, ease of handling, value for price, etc. You would. So. A request.

Im a Hikoki fan myself, but my multitool of choice is a Fein. Went for the Hikoki, but the dealer advised my the Fein. Held them side by side, and the feeling of the Fein won me over in an instant. Much less vibration from the Fein. So comfort wise the Fein easily wins over Hikoki, and with the danger of vibration damage to muscle/tissue/fingers and hands I do think that a test would be hard to do, and maybe should be focused on comfort/vibration and maybe not outright performance.

You might want to check out the Irwin as well. The ratcheting mechanism is SUPER nice when you need to adjust the size and hold the wrench with the same hand. That's my only complaint of my Knipex, I need 2 hands to adjust the jaws. I got 2 of the Irwin (small/large) at Lowe's for half the price of my 1 Knipex (which I still love).

@@ProjectFarm On the subject of graphs. A summary table would be great. Tool across the top, category down the side. Each score is listed, then a weighted score is shown at the bottom. For each category, you could color code each score in Red, yellow, green to show if it is the upper, middle, or bottom of it's range . So cleary the ones with more green would stand out. Weighting would help amplify or diminish the effect of a category.

Another suggestion I can give is for flashlights, all with a specific battery size. Using the best rechargeable batteries for instance. I have a few Maglites, but there are so many brands (Streamlight, Olight, Nite core to name a few) to test which might make it difficult.

I generally don't buy the super fancy, expensive LED flashlights but I have a number of different flashlights, usually around $10 to $12, a few at $20, And the Achilles heel of almost all of them seems to be electrical connections that that are press fit or loosely crimped, which oxidize a little and fail intermittently. The Springs in the battery holders or battery compartment are usually crimped very loosely to little metal plittle metal plates and even if they appear to be gold plated the contact at those points is invariably a little bit loose. I solder the springs to the metal plates (It is much easier to do this before you experience any battery leakage no matter how minor) and eliminate the intermittent connections. Ditto for the cylindrical 3 battery holders, solder the springs to the contact plates for fewer problems.

@@somethingsomeonesaid6455 , the Achilles heel of most flashlights that use AA or AAA cells is battery leakage, and intermittent mechanical connections *by design* (even before leakage ocurs). First of all, one famous " copper top" brand is absolute crap nowadays. Secondly, batteries wired in series tend to leak when one battery is slightly different than the others (slightly used, slightly older, different batch, differing brands); It appears that the one battery with different characteristics or slightly lower voltage or different chemical makeup or at an increased stage of age-related degradation ends up functioning kind of like a resistor and overheats from the current of the other batteries passing through it. This phenomena is probably worse than anit is probably worse in any flashlight that has multiple modes such as high low and flashing because such flashlights are never truly off and invariably are passing a small amount of current through an integrated circuit's integrated circuit at all times which is how they remember what mode they were in when last switched on. This phenomena is probably worse than anit is probably worse in any flashlight that has multiple modes such as high low and flashing because such flashlights are never truly off and invariably are passing a small amount of current through an integrated circuit's integrated circuit at all times, which is how they remember what mode they were in when last switched on (and typically switch to the next mode in line, which is annoying). A flashlight with a true mechanical on/off switch and is off switch and just one single mode of operation, or where it has a separate switch to select mode's, might not draw a current all the time and perhaps the batteries will be less prone to leaking. Any review or evaluation of a flashlight should include how easy it is to get inside of it to clean corrosion from battery leakage. The little slide-in plastic cylinders that hold 3 batteries are definitely more convenient in this regard. Note that the springs in those battery holders, and indeed the springs in almost all flashlights, are often loosely crimped in place and have a mechanical contact at that point which will oxidize and become intermittent, especially if there is any battery leakage. Soldering the springs to the thrust plates will usually eliminate this problem, and even if the flashlight undergoes battery leakage later on you will find it much easier to clean the springs and contacts and get the device functional again. (White vinegar will foam away the visible corrosion but a pencil eraser or fiberglass bristle "scratch brush" may be necessary to polish the contacts). Anyway, do not mix battery brands or batches, and don't leave them inside a flashlight that is used only occasionally. If you have a good quality small soldering iron and good soldering skills, solder those springs! Clean the metal first,and the solder should flow more easily without you overheating and melting adjacent plastic.

I have used a set of Knipex slip joint pliers for 33 years. There is some slight wear from things I shouldn't have tried with them. They hold up extremely well. No corrosion issues with them either, and they've seen a lot of rain and grey water. If they still make them as well as they did back then, I'd highly recommend them.

I prefer Knipex, but Bahco are often good also. I also always want to have a cheap option of every tool available, for those time when they will be abused. Don't want to accidentally weld something to a pair of Knipex. Edit: Generally prefer Kamasa-Tools over Bahco, but not sure if they are available globally. At work we use many small Lindström pliers, their flush cutting side cutters are amazing, but has a tendency to shatter if abused.

Simple physics is why the Irwin brand was able to do the best job gripping with threaded rod, it failed with the very hard metals because they are cost-priced with materials. The others are slim because they are trying to conform to a relatively loose industry standard. Looks like the most common sizes are ~1/4-3/8" standard, ~7-10mm metric with Irwin being the only one close to 1/2" or almost 12.5mm.

I refuse to work with those tongue and groove pliers like the channel lock one. With very little force they already skip and become very painfull. The type used by Klein tools is a bit better, but skips quite easily (mostly annoying when trying to use in hard to reach places. Can't remember getting injured by the Gedore and Knipex. Latest one to the collection is a Wiha automatic for ease of use, but not yet put it to hard labor.

I haven't had very good luck with Gedore pliers unfortunately. These water pump pliers are fine although the teeth obviously don't last as long as the Knipex, but I've also had side cutters and combination pliers from them and they had issues both with the hardness of the steel and the joint coming loose. Could be ok for occasional use, but not for a professional.

Do an adjustable wrench test. I swapped to an 8" Bahco from a 10" Crescent and/or visegrip brand 2 years ago, and they are amazing! Wide opening jaws. Narrow jaw thickness for hard to reach spots. Comfortable and ergonomic polymer grip. The 10" Bahco fits larger Hydraulic Din fittings with ease.

I'm not a fanboy of any particular brand, but after years and use and thousands of dollars spent on various tools for the trades, Knipex is the only one that hasn't let me down even once. Just don't make the mistake of cutting ascr with the real nice shears that aren't rated for it. The crater just makes you sick.

Knipex makes really great tools for bolts and hardware etc. I build communication towers and Knipex is my favourite for that sort of thing, but for lineman pliers, and copper loppers, and other cutting tools I lean more towards Klein as my favourite...18 years in and my feelings on some tools have changed over the years, but that's where I stand at the moment.

I second this. I've been a Klein guy, but after really liking my knipex pliers I decided to try their diagonal cutters. Total junk. They broke within 2 months while I was cutting something that my kleins have no problem with. I went back to those kleins and have been abusing them daily for 5+ years and they still work great.

Yep, totally agree. Inside wireman for twenty years, and all my tools are Klein except for the Knipex pliers. They are very well made and grip hard on everything.

What stood out to me, and made me wonder about some of the tests, is that the angle was not always held constant. I don't know if changing the angle between the item being grasped and the pliers would make it grip better or worse, but I did see it varying alarmingly.

In America they are always called Channel locks, because that’s the company that invented them. Once you smash your fingers when they slip off of something though, everyone swaps to Knipex ones

Amazing with the Knipex. In Canada I haven't seen Gedore. One of the best parts of this video will be informing that it's "K-nipex" not the reasonably assumed English silent K. I have Klein as an elecchicken, but mine aren't the fancy new fandangled version like yours, all sculpted out. I have this Irwin quick adjust for home use and they are impressive.

....and here in the USA "Gedore" has become the generic name for cheap, crude, Indian made combination(spanner) wrenches...I actually didn't know until recently that Gedore was a well-respected German tool manufacturer...Knipex, Hazet, Stahlwille, Wiha,Wera, and to a lesser extent, Heyco, are all well-known top-tier tool brands here...

The best bang for the buck is made in Taiwan tool from Harbor Freight which is not surprising at all. Btw, I moved to Knipex pliers a few years ago because I wanted to have the best pliers. Thanks for sharing the impressive review. So much done in 14 minutes is just incredible.

Great video. Surprised to see Channel-Lock, the main starter of this slip joints stype do near the worst. The quality has went way down I've noticed. The Knipex Cobra are my go to for sure. 5" carry, 10" in backpack, and 2x 12" pairs in my box. Klein and Robogrip I have as well, both do ok, but barely get used anymore.

I already knew Knipex was gonna be the best, but I was a little surprised (pleasantly) that Doyle did so well. I like that line of pliers for the house and was considering getting a pair for my grandpa. He still uses the slip joint style.

Pretty impressive that Doyle was able to at least stay in the same ballpark of performance as Knipex for literally half the price! Knipex is def one of the best tool makers in the world though. The consistency of high quality and performance excellence across all different types of tools is what really impresses me about them. I try my best to choose my tools based on meritocracy more than anything else (which is why I always watch Project Farm!) and Knipex almost always seems to have the best performing stuff

Suggestion: best 5” random orbit sander, we use them all day at work and we can’t find one that lasts for more than a couple months oddly enough we’ve found the ryobi to be the most reliable

I’ve put Knipex to the test over the last 15 years or so, doing millwright and heavy mechanic work both offshore and in pipeline work. Knipex products for the win!

Suggestion: network wire testers. I know it's a little niche, but your methodology is perfect for this. There are wire testers that claim to tell the length of a wire, distance to faults, rated speed, etc.

Very informative! Whether by a simple set-up, or complex, your tests seem to cut straight to the heart of the information that a person using the tested object as a work-day tool really needs, providing non-biased and extremally useful data as to which tool will serve the best. Something that the manufacturer's boasting almost never does. Thanks again for all your efforts.

You should do a pipe on the handle test to see how much pressure they can take while tightening a bolt before failure,my knipnex I use use a pipe over handles sometimes for leverage , really helps it tightening or break a nut loose

Nice to see a bunch of German tools in the mix lately! Surprised to see the Gedore :) By the way, your first jig... The only thing missing was a standardised distance of where you apply the clamping pressure measuring from the pivot point. Remember Archimedes, give me a lever and I can move the earth, so yeah not all pressure was equal in that test.

The clamping pressure needs to be where one's hand will apply it with the same force. So I would say it was a real world test.

I do agree with you, but I also feel like I agree with PFs method too, cause it's like the same guy gripping the pliers in the same way during each test. He's even mentioned in a previous video how one of the tools was a bit longer, so they did achieve a type of mechanical advantage, but I think it works for how he's testing.

I love my Knipex Cobra’s. My first pair I found on the side of the road and I thought they were some cheap brand. It wasn’t until about 2 years later, after I had put them through the ringer, that a friend told me what they were. I then realized that’s how the jaw’s had held up so well. Just bought the 3pc set a few weeks ago and they are doing just as well as I had hoped. Great video as always!

Found tools are the best! I can spot a socket lying on the side of the road at 75 mph. I'll hang a U-turn at the next safe spot and go back and get it every time. Around here, the oil field guys just throw their tools on the back of their flatbeds and they fly off all the time.

Who makes the best chemical paint stripper? Everyone used to use "Aircraft Stripper" before the EPA made them remove Methylene Chloride, but no one really knows the best chemical stripper anymore.
