"Project Hiu was simple in my mind, we would stop these men fishing sharks if we could provide them with an alternative source of income, employ them in tourism. Everyone has a family they are trying to feed. So how do you end generations of fishing sharks? You don’t. You replace it. So that's what I did, convincing my first fisherman to join me which lead to six boats joining me. They make double what they would fishing sharks in tourism and don't have to leave their families. What if we improve life below, by improving life above. It took me more than a year to know these fishermen. To eat with them, travel with them, meet their families, work with them. It took time and patience and a lot of trust. Some of us are of conservationists because we can afford to be, and some of us are shark fishermen because we can’t afford not to be. To be effective sometimes you have to put aside your how things make you feel, you have to see the bigger picture which serves no person purpose or gain to ones own emotions, but can eventually lead to what the world needs, effective change and collaboration with our so called enemies to inflict that change.
