suppose in a projectile (which ends at diff height) we are asked to find the time taken to reach max height and also the time taken to reach the ground. If we use 'S' as positive while calculating time for max height then do we need to use 'S' as negative while calculating time taken to reach ground.

When the ball is the rising up and falling down in both the cases the gravity is acting down then why is the sign negative when the ball is rising up 2:49
@ThatPhysicsGuy2 ай бұрын
In 2:49, i have taken any upward velocity as negative and downward velocity as positive. In that case, the downward pull of gravity will also be positive. But when we calculate moving up and then down, then we use acceleration as negative.

Bro can we cross out the two "t" in the last equation. [4:18] . And we'll just left with (s= v-u) but that wouldn't be correct 😢 I think you missed out something. I guess it might be the number 2 at the denominator in place of "t" 🥺. But overall, this is the best video I have come across. 😊❤

THE GOAT
@shadowscythes2 ай бұрын
Thanks for being the only person I found who explained that you have to use negative acceleration when the projectile is going both up and down, that was confusing the heck out of me cause I didn't know whether to make it positive or negative when the entire motion was considered. The only thing I'm still not 100% understanding is, why are the positive and negative accelerations multiplied by each other? Where does that come from? edit: also what happens if you have a projectile launched from a lower down point which then lands on a point that's higher, I'm assuming the overall gravitational acceleration will still be negative?
@ThatPhysicsGuy2 ай бұрын
1. The negative and positive value for acceleration comes from the fact that they are first moving up and then down. So as they are moving in different directions they SHOULD have different signs, roght? that's why 2. Multiplying them was a visual way of showing why when we have two signs overall we take the negative. it's not explained well in the book 3. if we start from a lower point and end at a higher point we will follow the same formulas as the opposite. anything else?
@shadowscythes2 ай бұрын
@@ThatPhysicsGuy Wow thanks for the quick reply, wasn't expecting one so soon 😂I think I understand it now, much appreciated My textbook and professor were both messing me up with how they were seemingly interchanging the positive/negative numbers for acceleration instead of setting down as positive, so your explanation in the video helped a lot
