in vectors, we use something called i and j notation, i is horizontal and j is vertical, thats why he put 20 in for vetical

In the first example why is g a negative instead of positve

Cos you're working out the upwards motion (which you take as the positive direction) and gravity acts downwards (which you take as the negative direction). Hope this helps! :)
