Thank You for all of this wonderful information in one place. I'm still wondering some things about sleep studies and if there's any place that goes into more depth about how a sleep study is performed and the criteria that inform a diagnosis. Narcolepsy is often not predictable, so what if one doesn't present the necessary symptoms during the sleep study?

Ive never been diagnosed but ive had episodes when ive been extremely happy, and suddenly get weak. Like a sleep paralysis episode but being fully awake. Its so hard to explain. Ill lose all strength in my arms. And heres the other thing, sleep. Ive been tired all my life. I could sleep 20 hours a day. When i was a teenager my mom thought i had mono. My doctor said i was just a teenager. I was able to convince a doctor once that i couldnt sleep well. I was able to get on a sleep medication, lunesta. Even though i was sleeping like a darn lumberjack i was still tired all the time. Sometimes at work i have to do computer training. I fall alseep. Every. Single. Time. I have no idea whats wrong with me. I know my fiance says something isnt right beings i can sleep for hours and hours but be tired all the time.

Realizing this was a year ago but I have OSA and always thought my issue was related to my Sleep Apnea, however I found a great sleep study doctor who listened to my issues of sleep tested me for idiopathic hypersomnia and as it turned out I have been diagnosed with narcolepsy type 2. I lived my entire life thinking it was depression, then apnea…. No it was narcolepsy. So sad I’ve had to spend my whole life dealing with this and it took a 3rd sleep study doctor to run the appropriate tests to diagnose. So I’ve got both situations occurring, obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy. I am 51 and fit. Work a labor intensive job, and was constantly forced to believe it was depression and I had always said it can’t be. It’s crazy. I start my meds here soon to see how these might help. I’m hoping they do, cause it’s been a life long nightmare of sleep/exhaustion excessive day time sleepiness is an understatement. This has answered so many questions. What an eye opening moment.

Hi @scottlandb6579 It sounds like you're describing my exact situation. I am being treated for apnea after having several sleep studies, but am still constantly fatigued and sleepy. I think the specialists have missed diagnosing narcolepsy. Would you be willing to share what meds you've started and if they've been helpful? Many thanks for any info.

I have a close friend that is in denial about this sleeping disorder. I’m very concerned, he falls asleep anywhere!!!! NFL games, NBA games, NCAA basketball games that are sold out and loud, I legitimately mean anywhere! My wife caught him dozing off on a trip to an out of state air port, she said his eyes were closed on the Highway! He just told Me he got in trouble at work for falling asleep during a virtual 1 on 1 meeting with a super visor! Any advice?
