The performance by the Zagreb Ensemble of Prokofiev's first string quartet is outstanding to say the least (superbly sublime). In general the music by Prokofiev treads closely between the tonal-atonal and beautiful-grotesque boundaries. One either likes this musical composition style (as I do, since I find it rather intriguing) or completely rejects it.

Hm, I don't find much if any atonality in this piece. Polytonal, dissonant, grotesque, yes. But the persistent use of repeated notes would be verboten for the atonalists. Prokoviev liked to be iconoclastic, and following any deliberate scheme to avoid tonality doesn't seem as though it would be to his taste.
