Hi, I'm John F Willis, and I did the original drawing above. It is in fact a Warcraft Orc drawing titled, "Shaman on You". Everything that Stan said in this critique is absolutely, 100% true and I stand enlightened due to his spot on critique. I am both honored and privileged to have Stan critique my work. Thanks Stan!! -John

Hi John, I know this was 4 years ago and I don't know if you still look at KZbin... But I thought your drawing was good and even tho he was correct about the drawing .. did you get any better?.. I play World of Warcraft and would like to see the improved one if you have one.

John did a fantastic job. Two things I think he did much better then me 1. The expression. His is more intense and angry, caused by wings of nose being lifted higher and inner brows coming down lower. 2. Including the secondary elements like the hand, sword, shoulders, brings him to life and tells a story. Nice job, John :)

Regardless Joe Mad understands the fundamentals being taught in this video, which is why he can do what he does. The original drawing is full of mistakes, not purposeful exaggeration like what Joe Mad does. The whole point of this video is to teach, Proko isn't trying to simply outdo someone, he is trying to teach a specific skill, and if you read the top two comments you will see he has helped the original artist in this regard.

So many irrelevant comments on this video. Proko stated at the very beginning that he's not so creative at concepts. I also prefer the "feel" of the original drawing but that's beside the point. This is strictly a technical critique. It's clear that the original artist had a lot to improve on in his fundamentals. If you can't see the difference between deliberate deformation and a lack of skill, then you should learn more fundamentals yourself. It's not a choice between vision and technical correctness. It's best to have both, you know.

The original artist has my disease, I am obsessed with rendering everything in high detail I often forget/miss my building blocks. Several hours later I realize there's nothing that can be done to fix it, for all the detail I've already put in, and it gets scraped. Just did that, actually :/

I kinda of enjoyed that the original had asymmetrical eyes; it adds to the concept of the character for me. There are things in proko's picture that are done very well of course. However, the original's expression and gaze is wonderful. In regards to the neck beard, I've sense some Orc references with it. Both are excellent pictures the original look like a lot of time, thought, and passion was put into it. Lovely video thank you for sharing.

Stan, great idea to on a more advanced project. While I love the motion and flair of your revision, I disagree in part. I really like the student nose wrintkes, it is more tense and expressive. Student appears to going for an asymetrical "squint eye wide eye" effect. I think this could have been preserved/improved. Removing the hand is a clear compositional win.

Good vid, personally, I would've thought the original Ork was pretty amazing and drawn very well, but everything you explained and how to change and why seemed logical. Btw, the hair under the lower lip, I think, is supposed to be his (I guess, dunno if female Orks can have beards^^) beard ;) I like your, or should I say both of your versions, the unchanged one looked a bit like an oldish, a little more exhausted Ork warrior, while after the changes he's more like the 'normal', aggressive Ork^^

I'm aware of Joe Mad's technique. What I meant by "not right" is the way he plays with the body, deforming it the way he does. Once more: Proko's drawing is technical. That's it. That doesn't stop anyone from enjoying the art more than the technique. Which was what I said. He can be the technical genius of drawing, but it will still be dead in the aspect of art by the end of the day.

That's exactly my point. When I said "original is way better", I was talking about the Art. That, independs on technical prowess. Take my fav Comics artist for an instance: Joa Madureira; his drawings are not "right", but that doesn't matter, as it's art. Not meant to be technical, such as drawing a chair, or a car's engine. Also, if his artisctic side would improve, why can't I feel it like I do with the original piece? Again, I'm not saying he's not good at it. Just the style isn't for him.

I know he isn't and I never said that. Perhaps if I'd said: "The art feel on the original is a lot better." It would've been better. Or not. I'm glad the original artist could learn the technical implications in his art and hope that when he draw another fantasy character, his art will have improved as well!

You may like the style more, because Proko's is more "Dinsey-esche" but from a technical stance, Proko's is far superior. Had Proko made it more gritty style wise I'm pretty sure it would be a lot more obvious which one is superior.

You are right, your version is more realistic but it is not as hideous as the other one. Actually I would dare to say it is not hideous at all, it looks like a strange beast and not an Orc which I think he was drawing in the picture. So I say I like the first version better.
@AtenAkaAton1
@AtenAkaAton1 10 жыл бұрын
In this case I would say yes. This isn't about creating art so much as technique. Have you taken art classes at a college yet? I personally have found what is prettiest or coolest isn't usually the one that is 'right'. This is more about teaching how to do things right, not make pretty/cool art. Also when one has the techniques their art virtually always improves. I would want to see what it would look like now, done after his critique, I'm sure he would make an even better image.

yeah thats what i thought too, until he pointed out the teeth and then you cant unsee that, same with the nostrils, i think the original seems better because it has more details, and its pushed more, takes more liberties. to make it more interesting plus noone touches proko in working shadows

You can feel how you want, but that's not the point of this video. It's not about which picture you like better but which one is technically right. This is about learning how to do something, and it is that something they are learning how to do that should be the focus. See my prior statement again. PS Joe Mad's drawings are most definitely technically right

Well I like the second version more bc it feels like a real thing. And the original feels like copy from one of the blizzard orcs. I actually feel more life in Proko's drawing. Proko reminds me of Marshall. They are great tutors but have no vision. The original is far stronger than Stan's. Really, Stan applied his style to the character and explained why he made the choices he did. The original was quite intricate and well rendered. I love learning fundamentals and new ways of thinking critically from Stan and Marshall. However, I find their work exhausting and bland. Right now, across the internet and on forums, everyone is nitpicking people's fundamentals, their planes, forms, etc. But in all this analyzing, the soul of the work is being forgotten. Why is it that some of the strongest, most powerful work is distorted, blurred and breaks all the rules that folks like Stan and Marshall push. Granted, you need to learn the rules first before breaking them. But if you are going to draw all technical like this, you will end up teaching this stuff instead of living it.

It is true, the soul of the drawing is very important and is closely linked to the style, but Proko has already said that the rules are to learn to break them: www.stanprokopenko.com/blog/2009/04/style-fundamental -principles / Personally I like his style and although it is very conservative. Maybe you should see his works and paintings that are different from what is seen in the channel: www.stanprokopenko.com/portfolio.php

I don't think Stan was trying to do a better drawing...he was trying to point out flaws in the drawing's construction that would make the original stronger. So he drew examples of altering the wrinkles in the nose, improving the lighting on the teeth and fixing the construction of the mouth, etc. I didn't see it as "look how much better my drawing is" but rather "here are some areas you should think about reworking." I agree that the original is more exciting, but by paying attention to the flaws and reworking it, John could make it even stronger.

Perhaps proko should attain to other type of art then. He may have more techique on the side of sizes (proportions), but he can't capture the essence of the orc's fierce personality. Some arts are better with the feeling then with the technical aspect of it. Maybe he should draw cars or such.
