A lot of weird negative fanboy comments on here. You guys have to realize that having synths that sound drastically different from each other is a huge positive right? I think people get up in arms only because they want to justify their purchase...but putting down other synths doesn’t make your synth better nor does it remotely justify your purchase more than someone else’s. Owning both would be a smart move since they have a very different sound and set of abilities. Comparison vids are only valid when comparing clones to originals or something like that. That’s why this is called a “friendly comparison” compare doesn’t inherently mean which one is better, comparing and contrasting is super important when buying synths and building a studio but really anyone watching this should just know this it’s just simple critical thinking skills

Well stated. But fanboys will be fanboys, and sometimes it's good to hear the good vs. the bad contrasts as well as all the positive stuff. I almost bought the Prologue 16 when it was $1999 until I learned that it didn't have aftertouch or a sequencer. Now it's priced at $1499 but I still wouldn't buy it. If Korg eventually adds those missing features then I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I really pondered this before finally buying the Prologue. I love the Prophet and had a original 5 for many years, but after extended playing of both, the fat rich timbre of the Korg sold me on it. It's a wonderful synth, no regrets.
@ErraticFaith4 жыл бұрын
A little amusing, since the thin boring sound and lack of pretty much any timbre at all, as well as missing a huge amount of features even much older boards had natively - is one of the reasons it has been a complete failure for Korg and is being redesigned lol. Still. Each to his/her own.
@carloschafin14 жыл бұрын
@@ErraticFaith I'm curious what you would choice over the Prologue?
@ErraticFaith4 жыл бұрын
It's a fair enough question. To start with, my issue with Korg is mainly that they come up with ridiculous excuses to remove features that for other companies are usually native. It might be Aftertouch. It might be the claim that we all want '37 keys' as with the new wavestate, it might just be filters and lfo. Being told that a future product 'might' be made 'later' depending on feedback, for twice the price - just to include some basic features... well I find that astounding honestly. I found the Prologue sound to be fairly un-analogue at the time, thats not to say it lacked appeal in some ways (simplicity of approach) but it was a close call for many with the Rev2 (Don't personally care for DSI). I held back, in the hope that Korg would fix the mess of prologue but instead they have kept pretty quiet and it is less promoted than Kronos 2 (nearly a decade old). So I find that quite troubling too. Novation would be the choice now I think. With aftertouch and a wider feature set than the Korg - but with a better sound as well.
@carloschafin14 жыл бұрын
@@ErraticFaith Did you demo the 8 or 16 voice? The 16 sounds much richer. Also, the point about the Novation is well taken, it's very nice. One feature of a knobby synth like the Prologue is it's use with Omnisphere which I use frequently. The integration is excellent thanks to Spectrasonics. I use it in that configuration most of the time.

Your P6 is much louder in this video which is unfair. Prologue wins for me, not just based on this video but on having owned both. I used to like the Prophet 6 (vs my Rev 2) but never loved it like you do... I sold them both, don't miss them. Then I got OB-6 and wow! so much nicer than the Prophet 6. I used a Prologue 16 before buying one and it was every bit as musical and inspiring as the OB-6 and loved the 5 octaves and 16 voices. Slight correction, you can shape the waves on the Prologuie after flicking the waveform switch, it actually has MORE control than the P6 and I prefer the flick THEN shape method. Select a clear obvious waveform with a switch is how we used to do it on vintage, the shaping ability is a bonus. I Don't much care for the P6's filter either. I'm surprised you still love the Prophet 6 more than OB-6 or even Prologue as I found it stiff, overly brash/brassy and small sounding (without FX) vs the other 2. Aftertouch is nice but worth nowt without great sound.

With all features missing on the Prologue it feels like a very rushed product. And if velocity is hidden, its like a smart phone where they like allmost forgot that you should be able to make calls with it... I definitey get it. Im spoiled enough with other synths that the 'missing' features dont really bug me... the sound is so sweet that it really makes up for it in my use. Prophet 6 owner (and lover) here, got the Minilogue when it came out, the Prologue has the same tonality and I'm not a fan. The air, the rasp/buzz, it's not smooth and there's not enough of it, which makes the thing difficult to sit in a mix. The Prophet is utterly magical in that regard, I can always get sounds tucked beautifully into a mix with no eq, just set the filter right and bob's your uncle.

The Grandmother is definitely on my list though!

I found a few things. The 1st 500 are being sold at GC for the MoogFest 2018. They were sold out in minutes lol. They will have another shipment in June as well as Sweetwater which is where I shop since 2015. But yea, the color scheme is a tad goofy but has that late 70's garage built synth junky vibe. I say jump the gun on the Voyager even if you do have a Sub37. I still wish I purchased a standard size Voyager. Instead I waited so long the only thing left was the XL. Funny store I made a backorder purchase of $5000 for the XL & a few weeks later I panicked & canceled the order. Less than 6 months later (shortly before December 2017) it dropped to $4000. This was a deal of a life time for me & I took it. So if you add up store price of Voyager and the 2 CV patchbay modules, it would be well over $4000. I'm very happy to have the builtin patchbay on the XL but it is the heaviest synth on the market. About the same weight as my retired Korg Triton 88.

It really is the "holly grail" of all mono synths man. If I had a lottery ticket, it would be well spent on the Emerson modular lol. You can get a few well cared for used XL's on ebay and reverb.com under $4000 or just wait for Sweetwater to drop the price again. I was stewing on standard voyager & XL model for the longest time. Just recently I was stewing on PRS custom 22 & McCarty 594. I finally made the leap for McCarty 594. I use to have a custom 22 & traded off. Latest videos have my ears stuck on McCarty for sure. UnderBridge Rock funny you mentioned 3 oct keybed. For me, I never wanted to step away from 3.5 oct keybed after realizing & owning the Model D, that extra half oct was & still is very useful. At this moment, I figure 2.5 oct is better than 2 like a sub smally I think lol.There’s just something about having that extra half oct down low, that is, if it’s not a full 5 oct. when I owned a mininova, I felt I needed more keys down low but no more than half oct. On my prophet 6, I actually feel I need 1 more octave up top. This seams to be in some cases. Since I first owned prophet 6, I just wanted to use it as my main analog polly synth. Can’t really do this with 4 oct but you can actually get by. I do complain a lot less now anyways lol. As far as 3 oct keybed go, I wish 44 key was more popular than 37. I know of only four 44 key (3.5 oct) synths out now, model d, voyager, pro 2 & mopho x4. All this being said, you may find yourself to give in if you want the synth bad enough, that’s if you’re still young. A lot of older cats just can’t break old habits.

Also the digital engine and patch stacking makes things deeper in a different way than a mod matrix. Both cool synths. The prophet holds up to its name and cheers to korg for doing something original yet still classic feeling. (100% on the fingerprint problem with the korg, I embrace it but it really bugged me at first. Even a microfiber cloth takes some elbow grease to clean the thing up.)

I'd say the Prologue for me as well. It comes down to the combination of features, sound and price. Prologue sounds great, offers 16 voices instead of 6 and has a 5 octave keyboard for, well nowdays less than a thousand dollars which is crazy. 16 voice analogue for under a thousand dollars is really great value. If you buy new it's at $1700 now I think while the P6 trades at $3500 new. Kudos to Sequential they make great stuff but at these price point it is a bit hard to swallow. Both synths are fantastic and sound great but one of them is less than half the price and offers, well, more. And I think the P6 loses just on that alone.

Thanks for the thorough comparison. Have to say I was initially dismissive when the Prologue came out as well, but it can definitely crank out some decent sounds. Love the Prophet 6 despite what some consider limitations for a modern synth, so I expect I'd find plenty to like in the Prologue as well. What I don't have is a bunch of space left for yet ANOTHER big keyboard, so my P6 module wins for me until they module-ize the Proglogue. I've had the mini and the monologues and their workflow is exactly the same so it was super familiar right out of the box. I'm really happy with how easy everything is to access (except for velocity settings which I have forgiven). I'm gonna try to do some more comparison vids like this going into the future.... I just have no rhyme or reason to it so I start talking and kinda let it get away from me. A script would probably help but I'm too lazy for that. I think the lack of polish in the video is part of it's charm

prologue sounded much better to my ears. has a great weight to the sound. lovely midrange, mellow top, similar to fine vintage synths. i owned one of the first p~6's they shipped and couldn't wait to get rid of it just a couple months later. harsh and lacklustre, dsi attempting to cover it up with mediocre effects. not a fan of the dsi sound whatsoever. p~6 absolutely pales in comparison to p~5 (any rev... i know, not meant to replace it), just as ob-6 pales in comparison to ob-8/x/xa.

Haven't tried it but at the moment the REV2 is my first pick.
@MRTUNA6 жыл бұрын
Rev2 has complexity that blows both of these two out of the water. If you like building patches or intricate moving pads and evolving sounds Then the REV2 is a super sweet synth. Ive got the P12 and thats my go-deep synth, so I feel less obliged to get the REV2
@suffpapst6 жыл бұрын
Given the LP/HP filter the Prologue is not even in the same league as the Prophet 6. The digital osc has aliasing. P6 is maybe the only really cool instrument from DSI. The P6 sound is umatched.
@quarkyzarky6 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I've owned Rev 2 and Prophet 6, and I've played P12 and OB-6 and Prophet 6 *is* hands down the overall best synth DSI have put out. And the Korg? Give me a break, it's not even in the same league. Sounds bad and is lacking so much. OOOOh but it has 16 voices? Big deal, 16 crap sounding voices. Pass. Prophet 6 = KING of modern synths!

Ethan Edwards I don’t make a lot of money really- I work at a canoe and kayak shop and it’s a cool gig. But I only buy good deals and my cost of living is very very low as I have lived in a motor home for the last 3 years. Korg has made the great Z1 in the past. That synth can do very much more than just simple analog synthesis. It's a shame Korg didn't continue on the Z1, but maybe it was too complicated for the potential buyers.
@chieftp5 жыл бұрын
the Z1 didn't do analog at all. I had 2 of them. it was a decent VA for the time and the other sounds were decent, but the nicest thing was the shape and size was the same as the Trinity and had the same high quality keybed (if I remember correctly.)
@lesdewitt64305 жыл бұрын
It was a busy time for synths Z1 had plenty of competition from more knob laden alternatives - Virus, Supernova, AN1X....seemed like everyone owned a Lead 2. I had tried Z1 and liked it, but chose Waldorf Q as my “biggie”.

I am not a professional keyboardist so therefore I cannot justify spending 2 grand on a korg. I practise my keyboards everyday and tend to pick up bargain desktops like a Peak or Virus C. I did breakdown and picked up a mint an1x the other day, it was only $600. This is enough to keep me busy and the Gas away for quite a while. But awesome demo, appreciated.

I must not be hearing what you guys are hearing. The Prologue sounds thin and noisy compared to the Pro 6. I bought a Pro-2 mainly because I dont particularly like the sound of the Curtis Filters that DSI typically uses.

I played both at a music store the DSI was a far better value and sounded much better. Don’t buy the Korg, it’s a $800 synth not $2000

Just have been listening to more demos like this. Its helpfull because no shops near me will have one for me to get my hands on so in this case i have to rely on some youtube demos. I think it sounds pretty good from what I've heard, just the price point feels a bit high and want to see of the 3rd party developers deliver will deliver with the user-generated waves. That might push this thing to a level that makes the price tag worth it.

Prophet 6 all the way, seriously. It's not even close! Prologue doesn't even sound as good as many cheap DCO synths (or even VAs!) while Prophet 6 is hands down THE best modern analog poly we have, better than OB-6 too.

i can’t find a store that has them side by side with the prophet, better yet something like the jupiter or poly six to see how it compares with the best of the best. the prophet has more features than the old poly six, and being modern stays in tune better. but the POWER and grist of the original analogue synths of the early eighties just DOMINATES the prophet and sounds so much more life-like and ANALOGUE and genuine. the prophet almost feels like a virtual analogue in comparison... so i’m really reluctant to waste time on the prologue as, i suspect it uses similar tech? though that meter on the 16 voice seemed like it was designed to help give it that old-school oomph! one day i’ll get them all together!

@johnadams54895 жыл бұрын
Mr Tuna Korg recently dropped the price of the Prologue to $1700 MAP, I have seen them selling for $1500 on Reverb.com. The Prologue sounds different than the DSI synths. Saying one is "better" than the other doesn't work. What one person believes songs great, other people may not be as impressed. Price is not the common denominator, its about the sound, buy what you like.

That is how I got my M3...a Prologue demo at Sweetwater with a couple hundred off, is the best I have found. It is hard for me to tell about the Prologue since it has been such a long time since Korg has created an analog synth...looks like even the DSI stuff is losing value after a few years now that the market has opened up. Plus the P12 desktop etc are easily under $2k. peace.
@quarkyzarky6 жыл бұрын
The korg sounds like trash though? don't buy a synth just cos it's cheap. Get a proper synth if you want analog get one that actually SOUNDS analog or you may just as well stick with a VA/Soft synth.
@shutterfilms72766 жыл бұрын
Oh look, a "that's a digital synth disguised as an analog synth" conspiracy theorist! Seriously though, sound is subjective and a "proper synth" isn't definitive.
@BobIGomez6 жыл бұрын
yeah I think it would make an OK companion to the Pro6 but I am wondering if the Prologue is worth the price.
@mightyredstallion5 жыл бұрын
If you ignore everything but sound, you'll probably end up with a Korg. Remember those old Pepsi challenges? If money isn't an object, a Moog One will probably rip the throat out of any synth you can throw at it.
@FrankManhands6 жыл бұрын
Great review! The P-6 and OB-6 sound awsome but what kills me is the envelope behavior. The EG doesn’t reset to 0 when cycling through the voices so you always end up with a truncated attack phase. In other words if you have a sound with a slow attack it sounds like the attack is set to zero, which kills pad sounds or anything with a nuanced transient. Changing the envelope setting never worked for me, this is why I sold my PolyEvolver and Prophet 8. Have you Noticed this? I actually prefer the envelope behavior on the Minilogue/Prologue which many people dislike because it preserves the transient/attack phase since the envelopes reset when a voice is triggered.
@MRTUNA6 жыл бұрын
Frank Manhands I only was just coming to terms with that this afternoon after spending some serious time with the OB and The P6. I kind of like the way 6 voices interact with that eg behaviour, but it’s not always the best for the situation at hand. The Juno 106 works this way too but I’ve grown to appreciate it. Being a little spoiled with synths it’s not a maker breaker for me but I’m really going to be conscious of that aspect in the future.
@benhoughtonmusic6 жыл бұрын
have you tried setting the key assign mode on your P6 or OB6? There's a specific setting for envelope retrigger. Page 45 of the P6 manual, i just had a look
@FrankManhands6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I tried that setting and it had no effect. I think it’s a matter of understanding the envelope behavior and programming around it. DSI makes great synths and it wouldn’t stop me from buying another. I didn’t connect with the P8 or PE but the P12 , Rev 2 and P6 are much more refined, and I really enjoyed playing them.
