Proning = putting a patient "flat on their belly with their chest and face down, rather than on their back. Medically accepted position to improve SpO2(oxygen levels).
Lying on the chest and stomach position, or on the sides, is considered to help the body get air into all areas of the lungs rather than lying flat on the back.
As per a study published in the European Respiratory Journal, 2002, this technique has been proven to be an effective measure for a long time in the treatment of patients with acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS) and is considered “a simple and safe method to improve oxygenation”
The health ministry of India has recently issued a guideline on proning for self-care for Covid-19 patients at home.

When not to do proning
- Pregnancy
- Deep venous thrombosis (treated in less than 48 hours)
- Major cardiac conditions
- Unstable spine, femur or pelvic fractures.
ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR FIRST
Regular monitoring of SpO2 along with temperature, blood pressure and blood sugar is important during home isolation.
Timely proning and maintaining good ventilation could save many lives.
The prone method is a temporary substitute and not a replacement for hospitals or oxygen cylinders. If you notice your oxygen levels dipping considerably, contact a medical authority.
