"Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day!"

Thank you so much. My native language is a syllable timed language and the word stress is always on the first syllable. So I tend to sound robotic when speaking English. Your explanation is brilliant. I like that you also compare the right and a wrong sentence stress. It helps me a lot to realize what I usually do wrong.

Your lessons are first class. True. The surprising thing is that you present basic matters which are valuable at all levels of English. Those details are often omitted at the beginning then mistakes and bad habits stay in student's mind for "happily ever after". Thank you Emma.

Your talent explaining how to stress words in a sentence is amazing, it is easy to remember and the visual effect is fantastic, great idea. It looks very simple to me but it is the basic steps the more important ones. I am always looking for lessons about how to improve the pronunciation with the imitation and intonation as part of it. Please continue making more lesson on this particular topic, it is very useful, and you have a great talent to make it easy to understand it. Thanks

Hi ma'am! Why in "Take a left at the light" the word "take" is not stressed? It's a verb, so a content word, isn't it? Thank you!
@DawnPeacock
@DawnPeacock 3 жыл бұрын
@@santvi Hi Santi! This is an introductory overview of sentence level stress. It is really common in these kinds of presentations to hear that "content words are stressed." This is true...but only partly true. Sentence stress is complex, and it's hard to dig deep into it in a 14-minute video. Also, I think a lot of the time people only present the most basic information because they think that's all their audience is ready for. But I really don't like to start with the usual division of words into "content words" and "focus words" because I think it gives a false impression and obscures a more important truth: 1. There is a hierarchy among content words, and nouns trump verbs under normal conditions. 2. There is ONE word in each chunk of language that gets the MOST stress, and to me that is more important--and also easier--to identify than trying to look for all the content words and stress them. If you stress all the content words, your speech sounds unnatural and you are missing one of the most important facts about English stress: We always put a kind of spotlight on ONE WORD per chunk of language. Finding and stressing that word is the most important thing you can do in terms of sentence-level stress.
