It depends on your zone. If you have a short season most of the tomatoes on the side shoots won't ripen. I think it would be helpful if gardeners to put their zone in the description.

I'm zone 9. Hot and humid. I only prune for airflow. Very light pruning. But we also combine the string trellising method and use bamboo trellising. Bamboo is my favorite by far. So much so that I've decided we're going to grow clumping bamboo out here on the farm just for trellises. Folks have to remember to the more green on your tomatoes the more photosynthesis made. Producing healthier soil and healthier plants.

That's interesting to hear Kimberly, thank you. I like to prune for airflow as well. Less chance of disease. Plus it keeps the garden controlled: when growing in the front yard it can easily become a jungle as I'm sure you know XD

I love your tomato plants! I thought mine were big until I seen yours 🤣 I grow mine in pots though, and use regular tomato cages. I also had to tie some of the branches to the cage because my tomatoes were growing wild all over the place lol. I have a video on my channel showing my little potted garden if anyone is interested. Next year I'm going to grow a ton of them. This is my first year growing tomatoes so I only did a few, and I am in love! I want a big garden like this just filled!

I think you are 100% correct. The way you said it was important bcuz if certain zones have more disease or too moist(need for airflow) it may make sense to prune. I don't have disease so far and let Super sweet 100 and Sungold bush out and got monstrous yield in 2021. Those suckers produced a lot of fruit which I think is the proof. This year doing the same with Black Cherry and Sungold bcuz I'm sold on the concept. My fruit are larger this year on top of having lots of fruit,I think due to placing fish parts beneath the plant when I transplanted and fertilizing every two weeks with lime, epsom salts as well cans of sardines in water, fish fertilizer and tomato fertilizer. Why so much variety of fertilizer? Bcuz I had it and had some smaller fruit in previous year and they are essentially similar in composition anyways. My main stems are larger than previous years so I think the extra food helped. I only fertilized once per month in 2021. A mistake bcuz I'm growing in huge pots not in ground.More food needed.

Zone 7b here and I don’t really prune a damn thing except like he said yellowing leaves at the bottom. It is not necessary most, not all, but most of the time 😮❤ 🍅

I mean I've done the math plus or minus on single stem tomato plants vs bushy tomatoes, both indeterminate. The single stem v bushy plant 1v1 clearly favors a bushy plant. So if you have space, bushy I'd recommend if you can keep it under control (in the cage). If you want to try loads of varieties or don't have much room, single stem works best. Now the math of system yield is more complicated. If you the regular 4-6ft tall bushy single stem plant v a maybe 4-5ft tall bushy plant, system yield tends to favor the single stem simply because the space a bushy plant takes up doesn't give more yield than if you had more single stem plants. So the system yield for a single stem is usually higher. Now, there does come a point where it flips because the bushy plant ends up having that many more tomatoes if it is large enough growing upwards and can out shine the 3 single stem tomato plants. So basically, it depends what ya want.

Great info. Per prune or not to prune. I do it with my cherry toms to ensure air circulation and full sun exposure and have always had fantastic results vs when I did prune as much. I understand the reasoning behind your non pruning method and that you got a great yield too but was wondering if you ever did a side-by-side comparison with the same verity that were pruned? I am going to attempt to grow beefsteak tom's for the first time so really appreciated the insights from your channel 😊 thank you.

Hi, thank you, glad you are finding my channel useful! I have done a side by side comparison, and basically the unpruned plant just produces more because it has more stems. But, it also takes up more space. So I think in the end it's really six of one half dozen of the other (personal preference). You can see some of the single stemmed plants in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PaYYGfbqxma8k Hope this helps!

I don't prune indeterminant tomatoes because early-to-mid summer temps where I live easily break 90F. Once that happens the plants are done with blossoming and they won't set new fruit. The tomatoes on the plants then are what I'm going to get that year. If I single stem I'm lucky tp get 3 tomatoes per plant; if I leave them alone I can get upwards of 15 per plant.

@lucasgrowsbestyt I bought beefsteak seeds . I planted and labeled them. All my plants are producing large cherry tomatoes. There's a gardening group on Facebook and several people says this happened to them . I thought I was the only one but it seems to be an common problem.
