Your honestly amazing! I work as a junior plant engineer and I always use your videos to double check the work that I am doing or whenever I get stuck. Honestly god bless and never stop making the videos which you do because I honestly use them as a refresher. 💯

Could you please check the value of Sp as used in the calculations? (Table 8-9 of Shigley's textbook: Sp = 85 Kpsi). Am I right? Please also check the final value of Km. Thanks for the video.

I concur. The value should be 85kpsi. Shigley's example on pg 442 Example 8-4 also agrees (see answer #3 on pg443)

Sure. Might be hard through text, but we can try.

Thank you very much once again, really helpful. Just one question, if the bolts weren't meant to be reused, the safety factors would've been less than 1?
@LessBoringLectures3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. If they're not meant to be reused, it only means that the preload, Fi, can be higher; which means that all the calculations (for allowable external loads, for example) need to be carried out again with that new Fi value. The safety factor should always be greater than 1 for the design not to fail.

If this calculation done reverse, isn't that more easier? Like Based on gut filling, assume 4 number of bolt n find out external force in bolt. Then based on bolt stiffness n joint stiffness calculate fos. If its slightly less than 2 then increase number of bolt or size of bolt. Isn't this another approach?

Correction: Yielding Factor of safety shall by Yield strength /bolt stress not Proof strength/bolt stress.
