Hi people, hello to the two of you, I just want to share to you a little bit history of my City from the Philippines. I live in "Naga City" formerly known as "Ciudad de Nueva Cáceres", it was the THIRD SPANISH ROYAL CITY after Manila and Iloilo City. Our Language (know as Bicol Language - Bicolnón) was deeply influence with Spanish. We often used the following with spanish origin: 1. Cumpleaño = Birthday 2. Semana = week (The list goes on and it is speculated to have 25% of the language has Spanish Loan words) 3. Anything related to cuisine/utensils 4. Numbers (Uno, dos, tres....) (Time) 5. We love Kaldereta, Menudo, Mechado, Arruzcaldo, Igado, and the list goes on. Note: I don't speak Central Bikol Language, perhaps I am fluent at one of the dialect of Bicol Language which is "Bicol Rinconada". I just want to share my culture, my Identity. Thank You.

Just a little info. In Filipino, the word “Bolero” means someone who’s eloquent and good with words but uses it with lack of sincerity, sweet talking without the follow through.

Cyril James T, BOLERO is not a FORMAL TAGALOG WORD. It's a SLANG or STREET WORD. It is derived from the word BOLA, thus, BOLERO or BOLERA. Actually, BOLERO is a Musical Genre whether in Song or in Dance. It's kinda Slow Cha-Cha.

I was a “victim” (lack of a better term) of this one time in one of my old jobs. I was stocking some items in an aisle once and somebody came up to me and spoke Spanish. I didn’t get what he was saying but I knew he was speaking Spanish. Just to kind of mess with him but in a non-malicious way, I told him “Lo siento, señor. No soy Latino. Soy Filipino.” He suddenly gave me the most hilariously confused face I’ve ever seen. Because I clearly look Latino to some people. But those that know me relatively well, I’m ethnically Filipino.

In spanish Horse is Caballo, in Filipino it is Kabayo, pronounced as KA-ba-yo. So yeah, we pronunced double “L” as Ya/Yo. But if we see a name or a surname with double “L” we pronounced it with L, example: Padilla, we pronounced it as Pa-dil-ya. Estrella, would be Es-trel-ya.

Up until the1980s, Spanish was a mandatory subject for Philippine schools, after which it was made elective with Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, and French languages. At the college level, you need to take 12 units of Spanish and for education and legal courses at least 24 units.

The abuelas and abuelos will be able to guide you there, especially if you go to the smaller towns. My lolos and lolas all spoke fluently as they had to, but that generation is disappearing. Some though have passed them on, so the older generation will get total recall once you trigger the activation.

My cousin's daughter looks like Waleska. We probably adapt well in speaking other languages because when you go to the next town, the people there speaks a different language. There is a constant switching back and forth between our native tounge and others. Spanish speakers are disappearing in this country. My nieces don't even know the numbers and how to tell time in spanish, which is so sad. It is a beautiful language to speak. They are more interested in learning the Korean language though (Hangeul).

There are still families and regions that use Spanish as one of their alternative dialects. I remember in the 80's, a lot of famous universities have Spanish as one of the subject or course. My clan used the dialect from time to time besides their native Ilocano and city dialect Tagalog and English. And of course, singing was a hobby of the clan with my mom was a singer back in the 80's and 90's.

regarding that Spanish only challenge, I would totally agree with you there, that you can pass it but not with ease. We can pick up a few words here and there but fluently I doubt that most Filipinos would be able to understand what you are saying but we can definitely get the gist of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong. This is just based on what my parents told me. I was told that the Cebuanos that do speak Spanish are the ones with the actual spanish that Spain uses while the other places in Philippines such as chavacano are more of a Creole-Spanish. I was born in Cebu but raise in the US so I don't know much about it. My grandfather is spanish and was born in Spain so that's how my mother based her opinion. She understands the Cebuanos that do speak spanish versus the spanish spoken in other areas of Philippines.

I remember when I was in grade school, my mother was teaching me the Spanish version of the national anthem, Marcha Nacional Filipina. My grandfather also used to teach my sister spelling but he was used to the Spanish spelling of words (calle instead of kalye, etc.)

This is fun...i am from the ilocos region here in the phillippines...we ilocanos have many spanish word that are use in our daily communication...like when we count we use uno, dos, tres and so on...even the time of the day we use spanish... When we go to the market...we say it Mercado publiko...my abuela when she got mad she says..."carajo" hahahaha...we love arrozcaldo, paella, arroz valenciana...adobo...and many more. When you visit the phillippines you can prove it to yourself the filipinos can speak spanish😊

Noemie Salvador, am sorry but I doubt that Pilipinos can speak Spanish. When we say "SPEAK" that means one can converse/communicate with fluency. Many Spanish words are incorporated/infused in the many Languages/Dialects of the Philippines, but that doesn't mean that any ordinary Pilipino can converse, tho some can be understood. But the problem lies in how to respond in Spanish as well.

My genealogy is Spanish-Chinese-Filipino. Great grandfather on my fathers side is Spaniard. My grandfather on my mothers side is chinese. So eventhough we don't speak the spanish language anymore, but the blood that runs in us recognizes it. Maybe thats why we can switch on our brains to Spanish mode if needed.😂

In my spanish courses here in the phil we pronounce the double ll like yl. Thus, pollo sounds like polio and llave sounds like liave, and not the mexican poyo or argentinian posho/pozho or podyo/pojo. Caballero would sound like cabalyero. Estrella, is estrelya(the spanish as in spain pronounciation.) the y is mexican, argentinian sh zh or j. Yours is a bit like dy or j. And z we pronounce like in spain, a th. Corathon for corazon, even madridth for the city Madrid, at least the way we were taught.

Older Filipinos may be able to speak to you in Spanish especially in places like Cebu and Zamboanga. We had to learn the Spanish language before we could graduate from college. Unfortunately, it was taken out of the curriculum so the younger generations do not understand the language anymore.

I believe that is the Castillian pronunciation, as was mentioned in video, I think. My parents told me about that. Example, Mexican Spanish says as the "y" sound, such as tortilla is tortiya, while Filipino Spanish is as what you said, with the "el-ye", so toriliya.

Hola Waleska y Efra!!! Pilipinos in general can READ and SING in Spanish fluently because TAGALOG like SPANISH WORDS are READ AS IT IS SPELLED. BUT cannot speak in complete Sentence/s in Spanish as a conversation. Any Pilipino who sings in Spanish doesn't necessarily mean he can speak Spanish fluently. Except those people living in some parts of Zamboanga and Cavite who speak CHAVACANO, a Localized Spanish. Marcelito Pomoy sings in Italian (the Prayer) and Spanish (Despacito) but he doesn't understand it, same thing with Morissette when she sings in Korean. FYI, there are lots of Spanish Songs in our Videoke (karaoke) and many are singing it like, Besame Mucho, Quizas Quizas, Quizas and Historia De Un Amor to name a few.

Ll is funny because as others have said, we pronounce ll as elye in the Philippines even if it isn't officially part of the modern Filipino alphabet because we still encounter lls mostly in names of people and places. So people did hear a difference between ll and y. A lot of the loanwords that have been "Filipinized" do give a clue to how our ancestors must have heard the sound. It's sometimes rendered into a y sound as in kabayo and sibuyas and sometimes elye like in silya, kutsilyo, and kabalyero. I think we also called Spanish "Kastila" similar to how you call it Castellano.

There is also a word "estrella" in Tagalog/Filipino with the same meaning (star) and almost pronounced the same. 'll" (double L) is pronounced LYA by most, but it wont be difficult for Pinoys to change the pronounciation to "YA" when singing. Also, since Filipino/tagalog language are mostly in syllabication almost the same as spanish. You can survive speaking in spanish in the Phils....just speak slow and use mostly nouns and some verbs and you will be understood, also numbers, time, months, days, we have about 40% filipino words from spanish, but some words may have some different meanings. @efra I guess you can at least get basic spanish as a response in your 24 hour challenge esp for people who's been in college up to the 90's coz we have spanish subject as part of our curriculum, or maybe that's because we've been under Spanish colonial period for 333 years that some of spanish words were incorporated in tagalog, but there are some who can speak spanish well, known as chavacano here, mostly hails from southern part of the Philippines.
