A fascinating fact about Legend of Sleepy Hollow is that it's not really a ghost story. It's subtly revealed at the end of the original story that the horseman was Bram Bones in costume, and Ichabod survived the incident, but moved to another town out of fear, eliminating him as a suitor for Katrina. This exactly what Bones intended.
@JoelikesmoviesnstuffАй бұрын
It is strongly hinted that Brom Bones is the Headless Horseman, but it's never fully confirmed.

If you step back and look, Washington Irving intended The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as not only America’s first ghost story but as an anti-Yankee story (Yankee being defined as the descendants of Puritan New England that appeared pious, intellectual, odd, hypocritical and had a love of money.) You can see this the way Ichabod is perceived by the Dutch settlers of New York much as Irving and his contemporaries viewed Puritans immigrating over into New York at the time. He is a schoolmaster that sees his school books as the end all be all, underlying his pursuit of Katrina Van Tassel is her father’s wealth and land seeing only for it’s monetary value and he constantly used other people to sustain himself. You can see this in a light hearted fun way, even in the Disney version (the best version IMO, especially since the ghost is real in that one). Brom Bones and the townsmen are amused by the New England Schoolmaster and play a trick to scare him out of town. Interestingly, a google search of the name Ichabod indicates it means God’s Glory is Departed or Without God (maybe a way of saying the New Englanders had lost their way)
@Adamguy2003Ай бұрын
In addition, Ichabod's enormous appetite for food can be seen as symbolizing a belief that the Yankees sought to take control of and figuratively "Consume" the fruits of the Dutch colonists, to reap what they (The colonists) had sown.
@masterofallgoonsАй бұрын
That's putting more on Irving's intention than is likely actually there. Ichabod and Brom both have their faults and virtues, and Irving himself was an educated, well read man who valued literature.

Wow! From New Zealand? That's cool. I'm a fan of Peter Jackson movies. I always thought that if I visited NZ someday, I'd like to visit Putangirua Pinnacles (what Peter Jackson used as Skull Island in his opening scene of Dead Alive / Braindead). With this system, I can have 12.9K Subscribers, yet post videos that don't even get 200 views. Anyway, I'm really glad that you enjoyed this video. And just today, I posted yet another video about a town called Kinderhook, which has even more true facts that Washington Irving used for inspiration to the Legend. I've always been fascinated by the Legend of Sleepy Hollow ever since I was young and I had wanted to go myself to see Ichabod's grave. Are there any other points of interest other than the ones you showed us ? I also think there is a 'Sleepy Hollow' Festival that happens around this time of the year but I honestly don't know much about it. If it's anything like Salem Mass's shindig, they go ALL OUT from what I have heard.

Other points of interest? There are many. Are you familiar with the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze? I've been to both Sleepy Hollow and Salem. As much as I love Seepy Hollow, I have to say: the festivities in Salem are much bigger.

the headless horseman was inspired by a soldier who lost his head via a cannon ball, he's in an un-marked grave
@JoelikesmoviesnstuffАй бұрын
True.
@Jim-McАй бұрын
Quite sad too because the reason he was buried in the family plot was because a Hessian soldier had given a blanket to the real life Van Tassel family (who's house the British had just burned and they had an infant) and the family thought the decapitated soldier might be him so they gave him a proper burial.
@JoelikesmoviesnstuffАй бұрын
@@Jim-Mc Where did you learn this?
@Jim-McАй бұрын
@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff The caretaker of the Churchyard Bill Lent reported the part about the buring of the farm and the Hessian saving the Van Tassel child/baby(?) and that being the reason the headless man was buried there because he was possibly the heroic Hessian. The fact that a single Hessian artillery man was decapitated by a single cannon shot from Washington's retreating army on Halloween no less! was attested by eyewitness of General William Howe, and Maj William heath of the British Army. Perhaps if he was an officer he was on a horse, and also possibly recognizable without a head due to his Hessian uniform. Hence the Van Tassels buried him.

I had know idea. That Ichabod Crane. Was a real life person. Irving liked the name. To use it in his story. When I was real young. I use to think this was a true story. You know kids. Like you said. People watch one version of it. Around this time every year. I'm a big fan of Washington Irving's story. I love Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane. The Headless horseman is the best ghost story. It could be the Irish in me. Ireland has it's own headless horseman story.
