Over a year later this series is beyond helpful, and a standard for new reefers. I've had freshwater tanks for years and always wanted a reef tank, but when I tried to do research previously, I ran into too much information. This series is straight to the point. I started with a 10 gallon almost 2 months ago, and now am in process of cycling a cobalt 40g. This series allows me to be on top of my game for my new tank and ensure success. Much love to the BRS team.

Thank you for not shaming those who don't QT. To many people do the QT wrong to begin with and prophylactic treatments done wrong is what leads to treatment resistant strains and is what led to a lot of OTC treatments being pulled off the shelves by the FDA. In most cases a 14 to 30 day observational QT and make sure they're eating well would be better in most cases.

Wow thank you so much for this series. I had seen a video that sparked my interest in reef aquariums. Then I tried “researching” through forum threads and for a newbie that’s an impossible task. An endless amount of conflicting opinions, some newbie advice threads are literally over a decade old. I especially appreciate you trying to distill this down to the best approach for newbies that mitigates risk. I certainly feel like this has set me on the right path.

After binge watching this series, I'm not sure if I should be excited, or dismayed. This could lead to periods of fund depletion/equipment acquisition intermixed with periods of living room decluttering/reorganization. I had a few freshwater tanks a decade and a half or so ago. I left them with my ex-fiancée the last time I moved. While we were together, she insisted on filling all our tanks with fish I didn't want. We're still friends, and she has since cut down to one 100 gallon tank. Unfortunately she's already gotten rid of the other tanks. Back when I was in the freshwater hobby, every time I was in a fish store that had one or more saltwater tanks, I always eyed them with envy. I always thought they were gorgeous, but also thought they were out of my league, from both a cost and difficulty standpoint. That was long before resources like this series were available. If I decide to take the plunge into saltwater, I'll take the slow and steady wins the race approach and slowly acquire equipment while I also slowly acquire more knowledge. P.S. There is never anything available where you keep saying the entire five minute guide is available, at least not with my KZbin settings. :-) If I exit full screen mode, all the videos in the playlist are available next to the right side of the video, while you're pointing to the left side of the video.

What UV light did you all use on the e170? What compartment did you put it in? I have LOVED this series but the only constructive feedback I have would be to show more of what you all are doing/putting into the e170 on the backside. I bought a used one, cleaned it up, but now I’m not exactly sure where to put additional pieces of equipment or what filtration media goes into the racks. Again, thank you so much for your direct knowledge. I’m excited to try this all out.. and a little nervous!

Have yet to set up a reef tank yet but am in the research phase. I like the idea of the skimmer and filter being internal, my question is since the products are made from plastic wouldn't they leak toxins into the water as the salt water breaks down the plastic? Does anyone know if these products withstand the salt water over time?
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
There are certain types of plastic that are generally considered to be "reef safe." All of the gear discussed in this series will hold up to saltwater long term without the issue of leaching 🙂

I'm a freshwater guy looking to try a reef tank and loved the series. Since I already have a lot of equipment, I figured the logical choice would be to start with the 40 breeder. While going through your videos, I came across the Fiji AIO internal sumps and was wondering if you think that would be a good option as it's cleaner looking. Maybe that, paired with the skimmer you used??
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
That's certainly a viable option. The Fiji Cube AIO kit is nice because it can help hide some of your equipment. Downside being that it takes up real estate in the aquarium, so you'll have to weigh the pros and cons when deciding which route to take.

Im curious what was the average setup cost on the breeder vs the all in one? Im sure they aren't very far apart.
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
The main difference in cost is the tank itself. You can usually find a 40 breeder and basic stand at the big box stores for about $300, while the rimless (and much nicer looking) Red Sea E170 aquarium/stand combo is just over $1800. Granted, the E170 comes with a light fixture, skimmer, mechanical filtration, surface skimming, and return pump, so there is added value there that you don't get with the off-the-shelf 40 breeder aquarium.

What is the lightning in each? The 40 breeder has way to much disco look for me and I am lookinmg into lightening! I wish kessiis didint come in only the small circular single pucks! I like the hydras but afraid of that diso and not sure if they have a diffuser. I know you said before about kessil is easier if you dont know which setting may be to strong and harm corals and I am going up from a current usa so I really have no idea and afraid I may use to much light or to little, actually maybe it was that the spectrum was preset with kessil but something you said about the simplicity of it.

Just ordered a bunch of stuff to get a 85g going. Loved this series. Question on the filtration though.....what about a canister filter? I ordered the bigger of the 2 in tank skimmers. Was considering 2 of the in tank filters but the price knocked that back. So then was going to go with 2 hob filters but again all the junk on the back. So what are y’all’s thoughts on a good canister filter?
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Although canister filters isn't necessary if you're willing to keep up with the maintenance of a canister filter, which ideally would be every few days of cleaning, then you certainly could run one. A vast majority of reefers choose to avoid canister filters altogether since most tank filtration is easily achieved with water changes, skimmers and the biological filtration from rocks and sand.

Just a quick one about removing cyano with reducing nutrients. I had low nutrients of 2 nitrates and 0.017 phosphates. I took my rowaphos offline to bring my phosphates up, I then got cyano from the phosphates increasing and being out of balance with nitrates. I then Re added the rowaphos to bring the phosphates back down and then cyano went away. So reducing nutrients does work.

You mentioned using filefish for Aiptasia. Once the Aiptasia are gone, don't the filefish mess with the corals? I see a lot of folks saying that filefish are reef safe, but only with caution or just not reef safe at all.
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
They can nip at corals, but in some cases of heavy aiptasia infestations, it's worth the risk. Most of them can also be trained to eat frozen foods, which will reduce the chance that they nip at corals .

@BRStv

Vibrant will go after all algae, so it will affect cheato growth too. For us, it was a minor inconvenience, but other reefers have reported larger die offs. Best practice seems to be to try to avoid dosing Vibrant to a system that has chaeto involved.

Algae blennies are always a good choice. Although not a fish, a small pincushion or tuxedo urchin also work wonders.

Might have been already asked here, but too many comments to go thru...Did you glue any of the rock? I didn't on my last tank and it never moved, even with a wrasse and a shrimp goby pair.
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
We did glue the rocks in these tanks. That said, if you stack the rocks securely, you can certainly get away without gluing them. Just be sure to add the rocks first, then the sand second.

What wave did set up to aio tank? I got 20g redsea aio and and have 2 vortech mp10 i just used one. Is it beneficial to use two mp10 and what wave mode do you recommend if i used 2?
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
Two can provide a nice flow variation, but in a smaller 20 gallon tank, you could definitely get away with one MP10. We usually suggest the reef crest mode.

How well did the hob refugium work?
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
How well a refugium (algae filter) works is relative to the water volume of the system. The bigger the mass of algae, the more filtration capabilities. In this case, the refugium worked well, but was never meant to be the sole filtration for the tank, so we still performed regular water changes.

For the 40B tank we used the Tunze Comline here www.bulkreefsupply.com/comline-doc-skimmer-9004-dc-tunze.html The E-170 all in one tank comes with it's own skimmer from Red Sea.

Holy cow that dude was dumping a whole cup of Vibrant into that 40 lol. A 40b is probably 36ish gallons I think biweekly that’s 5ml of Vibrant?Also, let’s not forget pods can really do a great service to keeping rock clean. Depending on your livestock it may take a while to get them self populating but there’s no downside to dumping in some tiger pods every month.
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
The dosing will depend a little on what issue you're battling, but here are some of the instructions. -Cleaning Mode - Add 1mL of Vibrant per 10 gallons of aquarium water once every week. -Maintenance Mode - Add 1mL of Vibrant per 10 Gallons of aquarium water once every two weeks. -Bryopsis or Turf Algae Treatment - Add 1mL of Vibrant per 10 Gallons of aquarium water twice every week.

Can you keep a Yellow Tang in a 40?
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
At a small size, you can keep one in a 40, but will certainly have to re-home to a larger tank as it grows. A 40 gallon will not be a Yellow Tang's forever home.

We have seen this in some cases. Since Vibrant is a bacteria, it's reasonable to assume that it could be affecting the types of bacteria that are present in the tank through competition.
