She had a job, an actual personality, and she and Navean had ACTUAL romantic chemistry rather than the whole “it was love at first sight! I never seen little mermaid, but yeah ^u^ Anna I think had the most dresses but Tiana in my opinion was more fashionable. It's hard to compare the two, though. That's tough. Giselle had a lot of dresses in her movie too but I don't think she had near as many as the others. I haven't seen every princess movie. I just know that they spent more work on making Princess and the frog more historically accurate because it was more of a recent movie and they had access to photos and stuff and there's still people alive form then, too. For Tangled or Brave, it's hard to find photos from way back in the 1800's so they couldn't be as accurate on those. Frozen was modern so scratch that. Enchanted was more of a fantasy themed which was partly modern so scratch that as well. Old ones like Snow white and Cinderella were just dumb all they wanted to do was glamorize those movies back then. The only historically accurate classic besides Princess and the frog is probably Aristocats

I once heard a theory that said that the blue dress Tiana uses at the dance was actually meant for her. It was for sure for Tiana, the contrast in style to what Charlotte usually dons makes it almost clear. It also shows a considerate side of her, and how even as a spoiled rich kid she takes the time to think about people she cares about.
@bonkers_papaya3 жыл бұрын
YESSS! Also think about it this way: If you look hard enough it looks like Charlotte has a smaller shoulder/chest width (im sorry-) than Tiana. I have a knack for small details because I like to draw Disney characters and this is what I noticed. Now, nothing is stopping Charlotte from buying a blue dress. Yes, it's very unlikely, but it's entirely possible that she could've bought a blue dress because she liked it. However, if you consider what I pointed out, and how Tiana looked in it (it looked like it fit her like a glove), why would Charlotte buy a dress that doesn't fit her properly?
@Grace-eg3ky3 жыл бұрын

@pokaay31633 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting take on it. I personally agree with the sentiment that 2D animation shouldn't go away just because 3D styles are becoming more prevalent- the two are not comparable in terms of technological advancement. Movies like Spiderverse and Klaus, more popular examples, showcase how 2D and 3D techniques can be used hand-in-hand to improve the visuals harmoniously, and not in competition with one another.

@pokaay31633 жыл бұрын
That's actually a really sensible observation. Her friends can take time to party and have outings with one another- they are very social, and as such more likely to be trendy and follow popular styles and fashions of the time. Growing up Tiana was always my favorite Disney princess. Not only was she one of the best character wise but she also had the best wardrobe. Even so the writers made sure that they handled her character arc with care considering this was the first black princess they ever gave us. They also rounded out the world of 1920s New Orleans. They completely used it to their advantage which a lot of other princess movies fail to do. We got to see the inner city, the jazz scene, black culinary arts which really came into play during this time, the swampy bayou area which was in many black folk songs during the time, and the "mysterious" afrian voodoo part of it that got blown out of proportion during this time and caused many riots blaming black people for their "devilish" ways. For once in a while the villain was genuinely scary and this film is filled with sooo many bops. Navien also had great character development as well which is pretty rare in these movies. All in all, dare I say this may be the best disney princess film they've made.

Sallow Squalls Official I live near New Orleans too and all the kids that were taken to see this movie got it, including myself at 11 years old. Not sure how it was hard to follow. Sounds like a cop out, lol! At the beginning end, and even the middle of the day we know why the movie flopped bc Disney did not properly promote it. If I remember correctly they literally had frog sounds as it’s promotion. LOL! It also flopped bc people were not a fan of the only BLACK princess being a FROG the entire movie while the other non black princesses got to be human for majority if not all of their stories. They did Tiana dirty.

The movie could have been great if all the frog stuff didnt exist...the opening was amazing and the ending was so satisfing BUT the middle was annoying and pointless..at least in reguards to Tiana..It felt like she was being punished for no reason..her not wanting a relationship or to settle down and have kids shouldnt have been an issue and her working hard and not spending time hanging out with others isnt inherently bad either...Tiana didnt always want to work that hard but had to reach her goal.and she was close so why would she have let up right then? Naveen needed to learn a lesson but Tiana could have at least stayed human during the movie and taught him hummility without turning into a frog herself.

WHO ELSE IS EXCITED ABOUT SPLASH MOUNTAIN BECOMING PRINCESS AND THE FROG THEMED

That will make it a much better ride. The ride itself is pretty fun but the theme and decoration was always a miss for me. That ''Song of the South" movie was not well known by most people, and it's never seen anymore (compared to Snow White, which is older but everyone has seen it). Song of the south was racist, the characters were not cute or lovable. Changing the ride to a well known , more recent movie with loved characters will make it so much better. I think they should also re-theme the Blue Bayou restaurant to this movie, the restaurant that overlooks the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. It has those fake fireflies and frog croaking noises, and really has the same ambiance as Princess and the Frog. Tiana was a restaurateur so she should have a restaurant at Disneyland.

I miss the 2D hand drawn Disney films so much. There’s just so much beauty and you can feel the love and effort that goes into making them. I was born in 2001 and since they started doing computer/3D animation, the *magic* of Disney movies has started to go out for me with each new one they release
@retrolord85464 жыл бұрын
I agree, but the one thing that only I seem to notice with Disney's CGI is that they're trying to copy Pixar's animation. Watch a modern CGI Disney movie and a Pixar movie back to back and you'll see what I mean.
@angg69994 жыл бұрын
Retrolord I’ve noticed it too! In 2010, Tangled made twice as much money as their budget. In 2012, Pixar’s Brave made nearly five times as much as their budget (albeit the same amount as Tangled). Pretty much since then, I feel like Disney wanted to bridge the gap between them and Pixar so they seemed more like one company than the other due to Pixar’s rising success. Coco, Toy Story 4, Onward, Incredibles 2, and Inside Out were all incredibly well received. From my memory, really only Wreck It Ralph, Frozen (1&2), Zootopia, and Moana have been successful. I think the issue Disney ran into was when they wanted to further their animation by making all of the live-action versions of their classic, beloved 2D animated movies from the Disney Renaissance. They’re trying another Renaissance but they aren’t producing new stories and the live-actions don’t have the same beautiful effect as the originals (the only one I enjoy is Cinderella (2015)) so it’s just ultimately failing :/ They definitely need a new approach cause the ultra realistic live action animation is not working and the similarity between them and Pixar is only growing so if they want to differentiate, they need to find something else.
@retrolord85464 жыл бұрын
@Optimus Prime Well excuse me ya jerk. I'll let you know that I'm 16 years old and in case you haven't noticed 3d animation is used too much now now and it's starting to get boring and overused. Pixar has a few gems here and there. Toy Story franchise, Ratatouille, Coco, Moana, Tangled and Finding Nemo have all been excellent films, but you're right, a lot of the Pixar films haven't hit the same way that the hand-drawn animations in the 90s and 2000s have.

I haven't seen the video but I would like to say that escpessially now as a new artist, I LOVE the visuals. Dr. Facilier moments were so good. The contrasts of the dark colors with the bright lights and constant threatening movements from the souls from the rest of the movie is on point. The purples and reds and oranges make such good ambience and really give off the perfect evil and manipulatuve, but playful vibe he had. Edit: I'm 15, I also think the 2D ones are better. Right now, lots of the characters have the same features with only small nuances to tell them apart. Also, speaking of the formess style, I read drawing a flapper character for fun and did some research. I read that they had some sort of corset-esque version of a binder that flattened breasts to maintain that form.

Cinderella represents getting lucky af what were they on lmao? Cinderella worked, but not because she had an ultimate goal or dream which required the labor she was doing. Tiana was forced to work BECAUSE of what she wanted, on top of being able to survive, and that was almost taken away from her multiple times. If they're gonna go the realistic "work hard" route it would most certainly be about the young African American woman in the 1920s trying to raise money to run her own restaurant, and NOT the born-rich white damsel who got the help of a literal fairy to make her dream of living in a damn castle come true. Both women endured hardships, but Tiana's journey was by far the most relatable and down-to-earth (as down-to-earth as being transformed into a frog is, but I digress). Cinderella reads more like a light fairytale, which it is. Just shows how scarce any kind of analysis goes into Tiana and her story. And though this is only one example of it, you rarely find any sort of appreciation for this movie AT ALL, because it was left in Disney's back-burner for not being an instant hit and served as the final straw to move completely to 3D. Forgotten and overlooked.
@clarelim8473 жыл бұрын
@@pokaay3163 Cinderella was literally ABUSED by her step-family, and made a servant in her own house. Also, she did not dream of marrying a prince, the whole purpose of the ball was to have a day off, she just wanted a break from her step-family treating her like trash. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Tiana, but calling Cinderella a damsel in distress is a disgrace to people who were abused, and had no way of getting out of that situation. You need to note the context in which the Cinderella story took place. By the estimated time period, there weren't any social services, women wouldn't have survived on their own, and you were shunned if you attempted to run away from home. She literally DID NOT have a choice. And yet, she still embodied the traits of kindness, perseverance, and imagination. She ran into the world of her own mind because she did not have any other escape. And despite all of that, she still managed to become a genuine and kind person. The cycle of abuse is a difficult one to break, and she did it. Both their stories are relatable, for different reasons. A woman of color working multiple shifts to support herself and achieve her goals would likely relate more to Tiana, whereas a girl who was bullied and abused would relate to Cinderella, and find hope in her story. One is not greater than the other, there are very real and relatable moments in both films (Cinderella having her dead mother's dress ripped from her very body by the step-sisters, Tiana's scene on the balcony feeling hopeless about her dreams coming true). You do not have to dismiss one to appreciate the other.

@Always Unlucky I feel like it could go like this: Cinderella had perseverance And Tiana would have hard work See? It's simple, this would have solved so much problems!

yess! I love her dress. It was a little upsetting seeing that she was a frog for majority of the film though. The 20’s fashion in this movie was everything. Off topic but when I think of 20s, I immediately think of the 1927 film metropolis. Love your content btw❤️

tiana deserves a sequel or a tv series a la tangled the series where she ISNT a frog the entire time!!! and it would be a great opportunity to showcase more 20s fashion

And I loved the relationship between her and her friend, tiana never judged her and was well educated on the fact that that was the way the girl grew up, and how they stayed friends til the end ☺️🥺 And Tiana was never jealous, just an amazing friend!

About your point regarding the bob haircut, I understand your point on working class women getting bob cuts because it was simple and convenient, but I personally feel like it just works to betray an aspect of her character we saw already. We see in the movie that Tiana barely makes time for anything, and a deleted scene reveals that she only had time to let her mother tailor a dress for her after she quit all her jobs. My theory is, she was simply way too busy to make time for a haircut (look at the way the movie reintroduces us to Tiana after the timeskip). Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this video and this lesson on 20s fashion history!!! Tiana's definitely one of my personal favorite Disney princesses and I'm glad to see the RonJohn team didn't just take extreme "creative liberties" with the outfits in the movie.

Honestly this movie will always be my favorite Disney movie!! I grew up watching this and tiana taught me how to be an independent hard worker. She's such an inspiring princess and I could only wish to be half as driven as her 😔

I always get emotional talking about this movie not only is it really beautiful and realistic. It's accurate to new Orleans lifestyle the voodoo, the music, the love, you can tell they did research. I also love how the subliminally put in segregation during the time, when they sat at the back of the bus and that your 'background' comment. But they also showed her and lottie genuine friendship. All in all it's a wonderful for the first black Disney princess.😍

Thank you so much for including so many real-life photos of African-American women of the era!!! My beloved great-grandmother was born in 1910 & we have zero childhood or young photos of her, so it brought me so much joy to see what ladies like her wore at the time. I do know that she was known for her thick long hair until she was in her 90's.

7:50 i think Tiana having a low pony tail instead of the bob might also have to do with the fact that nowadays a bob is seen as more "stylish" and "cool" and a low pony says "working gal" better than the bob

There is a theory that since lottie you see during all the film wears exclusively pink expect her Mardi grass gown. So that means that she had that dress reserved for tiana in her measurements.

On top of how amazing the message of The Princess and the Frog is, as well as how fantastic the fashion and love story are, we need to appreciate Anika Noni Rose. Girl has some killer pipes! She brings such power and emotion to the already strong songs. As an alto, it makes me very happy that my favorite Disney Princess is also an alto (at least predominantly). “Almost There” is my anthem!

👆👆 Aw see love, now y’all got people saying Tiana (a black woman) should *rescue* Lottie (the white woman.) You see?? Just let tiana have her shine. Lottie doesn’t need flowers for being a good friend. White mediocrity.

African lily I agree, she is totally adorable and gave the entire movie a special little charm. I was lowkey rooting for her to find her prince (doesn’t even have to be a prince lol) at the end! And of course Tiana deserves a sequel too let’s just not forget the entire picture ^~^

You forgot to mention that Lotties' facial features of a around, soft face and features to resemble child-like appearance were hugely popular It Girl style of that time. This movie had some errors, but made up for the number of actual accuracies of the time period. 🥰💖👏👏👏

the blue dress and her human wedding dress also have a low back cut, was that even in fashion back then? seems very modern
@bell26384 жыл бұрын
the very low back on dresses (especially evening dresses) was hugely popular in the 30's, like it was everywhere, it started in the 20's though and it was pretty popular then too, just more risque than it was by the 30's.
