Intro I will break down proposition 2 and why should you consider saying yes to it? Proposition 2 is an education bond. Which allows the state to borrow a $10 billion dollar bond to repair and upgrade the health and safety condition of classrooms, school facilities and fund educational programs for thousands of public schools, community colleges like us and some charter schools. 8.5 million will go to the renovations and new construction of Tk-12 schools, while 1.5 billion would go to use community colleges. To pay it back they plan to pay 500 million annually for the next 35 years Historical Background: To give some historical background In 2016, the money from the last school bond has run out and is likely to deplete in January. The districts are interested in renewing a new bond to help aid repairs for mold, leaky roofs, septic tanks, along with building classrooms, remodeling old buildings and modernizing science labs. The voters in 2020 rejected the last school bond, of $15 billion, but after some debates, the governor and legislators lowered the price tags. Afterwards a poll done by Public Policy Institute of California, showed that 54% voters were likely to say yes for prop 2 - For Prop 2: The first reason you should consider voting yes is because prop 2 is vital to prevent further temporary school closures in California. In California, it states that 38% of students in California do not meet the minimum facility standards. Between 2015 and 2019, 108 schools have closed temporarily due to issues such as contamination, mold, and pest and infestation, directly impacting students' experience and outcome. Research states that students in subpar facilities tend to have lower attendance and achievement rates. And when schools close temporarily, parents can't properly look after or support their kids because of work.. Children and teens early years can have lifelong physical, social, and emotional impact. Positive experiences and environment can lead students to a strong life long path, while the contrary can lead to lasting detrimental impacts like drop outs and incarceration. All in all, the environment can influence and impact student learning. Addition prop 2 is supported by a lot of influential institutions like the California Federation of Teachers, labor unions and community colleges. And current there is 12.02 million dollars raised for prop 2, zero dollars raised against it Investing in school facilities through this bond can be a long term investment. Improved school facilities can enhance student learning environments, increase safety and can accommodate a growing number of students. Putting off maintenance and poor facilities can lead to greater cost for extensive repairs and replacements needed in the future Lastly, construction and modernization projects funded by the bond could create more jobs and help boost the local economy. Projects can stimulate growth not only in the education sector but construction industry and related fields. It also attracts more families and businesses to California schools. ------ Against Prop 2: Opinions against it say, we are already in debt, and will fixing up the building be worth it or will it jeopardize us. Also that property tax is already high as it is, and it’ll affect the community and make everything else very expensive.Why can the government just allocate funds to education itself?Should we even trust the government with so much money, how can we know they would use the money as they should?What about the California State Lottery act of 1984, which allows the lottery funding to be distributed into public education. Where has that money gone and is it still in effect?Some people also argue this bond might only benefit affluent education facilities that can match higher funds and funding might not be inequitable Refute: While property taxes might increase, the rise is likely to be small and spread over many years. Bonds are paid back gradually, so the immediate impact on homeowners is minimal compared to the long-term benefits of improved schools. Also taxes are complex there are many factors in why it may increase While critics argue that the government could reallocate existing funds, the reality is that the state budget has many competing priorities. Relying solely on reallocation could lead to cuts in other essential services, which may not be feasible. Proposition 2 provides a specific funding stream for school infrastructure, ensuring that these critical needs are met without compromising other state programs.” Also while residents are concerned if the government can be trusted with the bond is valid, prop 2 includes specific oversight provisions to ensure funds are used properly. And other groups and committees reviewing the spending for accountability is directed to improving schools vs unrelated projects And to refute the con regarding the California lottery: Proposition 2 is a bond measure specifically designed specifically for constructing and repairing school facilities, which means it provides direct funding for physical improvements in schools. In contrast, California’s lottery funds contribute to education funding more generally, but the amount can vary and doesn't specifically target infrastructure needs. Essentially, Proposition 2 focuses on immediate school building projects, while lottery funding is more unpredictable and supports broader educational programs. Addressing Local School Needs: The argument is that this bond only benefits affluent districts overlooks the fact that this funding mechanism also supports local districts with high need, who need repairs in the first place Inequity Concerns:Also while it’s true wealthy districts can raise more money for the state to match .However, the formula is created to offer crucial support for lower-income areas that struggle to raise sufficient funds independently. And If a district can’t raise more than $15 million locally, the state may cover up to 100% of the costs.Additionally, the bond could set a precedent for future policy improvements aimed at addressing these disparities more comprehensively. ballotpedia.org/California_Proposition_2,_Public_Education_Facilities_Bond_Measure_(2024) www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-07-05/2024-california-election-proposition-2-education-bond-voter-guide

I hate that teachers don't get enough pay. Again, I'm all for fixing this mess, but simply don't trust it. A good deal of my property tax goes to schools despite me having no kids. These propostions have turned into a never-ending gravy train for the Union construction industry. You also can't find any transparency on which schools need repairs. Especially not $10billion worth. @@chrislastnam6822 after rigorous research, in my opinion, it’s not. It’ll help but, these repairs aren’t cheap and there’s a lot of schools needing it. The repairs are not something basic like a busted pipe. It’s issues like lead in the water supply, hazardous waste contamination, mold, pest infestation and more. These issues are easier to handle in a household (which can still be difficult) but, a wide scale project like a school adds a lot of complexity, time and resources to address the issues. Not to mention this prop aims to improve the quality of schools by modernizing them. There will still be quite a number of schools that won’t be able too, as the only way to receive funding from the bond requires school districts to raise funds. The $10 billion bond only matches what the district raises and if they’re approved for it. A lot of poor communities won’t be able to raise the required amount. Also, there may be a few politicians worth removing but, the elected officials like Pilar Schiavo, Henry Stern and Brad Sherman have done a decent job. I don’t see a reason to remove them for someone else. Makes you wonder how things got this bad. To each their own though. Mulled it over, and voted to put HEPA filters in schools. (In theory) it should pay for itself since air quality significantly reduces student performance. Plus as you may remember from your childhood any reduction in rats will make kids more attentive. Maybe it's a waste, but I'm willing to take that risk (which I can't say for all bonds measures this year).

Vote no. Enrollment is declining and we spend more per student in this country than in any country in the world but we dont get good results. The proposition also forbids competitive bidding so the money will go to overpriced companies with connections yo big wigs in government. We need school choice to get better student test scores . Vote no on two. Parents need lower taxes so they can take better care of their families.

The government can use the money to pay for houses for teachers or to increase salaries of school buteaucrats. Catholic schools spend gar less per pupil on schools but their students score higher on standardized tests and there schools aren't falling apart, unlike Los Angeles public schools.

The money should follow the child and not follow the ZIP Code vote no
@jyrrin2 ай бұрын
if you wanted the money to "follow the child and not the ZIP code", you would vote yes, because your schools are funded by local property taxes - rich areas have better schools and poor areas have worse off schools. if you want to fk the poor then fine, but just say it. otherwise, vote yes so the money actually "follows the child and not the ZIP code"

Schools also need to control the construction thieves the are taking building materials (paid for by the state) to repair their own homes. Just look around in the neighborhoods where these construction workers live. The ovious is PAINT. Notice the color of the schools being repaired and Painted. How is it, that so many homes are the same exact color?

drug rehab is useless. It has about a 2% success rate. If people want to stop taking drugs they will do so. Until then we need to protect those of us that don't take drugs from having our houses burglarized by drug addicts looking for money to buy drugs.
