*The manufacture of a propeller for an airplane is somewhat complicated but the balance is essential for it to work very well. My congratulations . Angel.*

hi i have used this method myself ,it works .as stated you can use clear dope or paint inplace of your tape. using tape is only a guide . the way to tell if your prop is out of balance , is start your engine and watch with your eyes on the tip looking from the side if its out of balance tip moves or appears to move from side to side. my instructers very strict with me on having well balanced props,hope this helps it can be very frustrating .very best myfreind.

thanks for this tutorial. the hub balancing had always been a mystery for me!

Very Nice Job! Thanks, you made it simple to understand and works like a charm!

Thanks, i didn't know how to balance the hub, very helpful!

I usually let them touch for that reason. They don't want extra friction from what i understand, but I think if you allow it to BARELY touch, then you have minimal friction and it should still give you a good idea of balance.

Thanks for helping me hub ballance my prop!

One thing you didn't mention about balancing a prop is the following. You can measure the thickness of the hub from top to bottom and side to side to see if it was drilled off center by the manufacturer and if so you can then correct this by reaming out the prop for your crankshaft to compensate for the deviation at the hub basically re-centering the hole. Depending on how far off it is you may need to glue a dowel filling in the whole in the prop and starting from scratch.

No, this is to teach how to balance. It's mentioned in the video, that people get frustrated becuase they never fully understand how. The tape method helps you learn fast. So you can then do it by other means (and understand it). I HAVE used tape before at the field in a pinch, and it does stay on with no issues, just FYI. But I usually use glue, paint etc.

The other part you did not mention is that there are 3 steps in balancing a prop. 1 balance it laterally. 2 balance the hub. 3 balance the plain in which the blades are traveling on...rarely mentioned this is done by measuring at the tips and rotating the prop which measures wobble at the tips. This is where one blade travels in front and or behind the other and not on the same plain or location which induces vibration. Hope this helps.

That is balanced statically but not dynamically. Ideally you need to find the C of G between the mounting hole and the tip of the blade which is almost impossible. Instead you should add/remove weight from between 1/4 and 1/3 distance from the mounting hole to the tip, this will roughly be the CG of one blade.

Is it wrong to shorten the heavier end of the prop.

ive just purchased a new prop 4 my easystar plane , its a "pusher plane" and am concerned that i have now got a "puller prop" on it? is there a diference between props that pull and push? and i assume that the thin sharper part of the prop never goes into the wind? understand me? ne1
@ElectricEddieDaus4 жыл бұрын
YEA .... idea was good but you fell short. why did you not actual balance the prop after the adding of the tape ????

hi, I used tape to balance my 18x8 prop and made sure there was no bubble when the tape was stuck, i tested the prop on the engine stand and your right the vibration was reduced alot. my question is that can i used tape and not use glue, becuase I feel glue would be very messy and a lot more difficult to work with.

Do you have any video of making propeller fo RC airplane?

Hey Gewizz - sorry, I've never worked with Pushers, so I can't give you a solid answer on that

Oh my God you didn't weigh the propeller bolts or the prop washer, nor did you account for differences in prop wood density that wood show up when engine is on. I can appreciate what you're doing and maybe it's more for peace of mind, but seriously?

When you balance the hub you must balance it in a vertical position..
@TOPHAT1966GS12 жыл бұрын
I can't see myself throwing away a $ 30 + prop away. The off center that I am talking about is only around .0050 up to .0010 of an inch, this just by itself throws the hub and blades off balance by a few grams enough to be a problem. This is just my way of cost savings. I have tried different manufacturers some props are good some are bad it just depends on who made it at their factory.

My first planes so far have folding props, and I guessing that there isn't really a decent way of balancing them.

@trpastor12 жыл бұрын
Tophat - That is not really balancing. That is inspecting the prop. there's not much you can do but throw away a prop like that. So I wouldn't consider it balancing. Also, the redrilling you mentioned, is also not balancing - it is inspecting. If you are getting props that are this bad, I would stop buying them from that supplier.
