Trying to keep my plants alive. My well went out. I took a suburban crammed full of plants ( stacked 3 high) and a trailer full up to the second homestead where there is water. Normally a 6 hour drive but it was 7 do to stopped traffic from a motorcycle accident. Still have a load or load and a half to go., After 2 plus weeks I have water back. ($9000 later). Have been slowly (can't run the hose at full bore) getting dying plants watered and ready to move. Having to move all the box turtles, water turtles, ducks chickens and pea fowl too. I am SO very thankful to have water again !

I have wanted a high tunnel or plastic covered high tunnel but I think having a shade cloth is important for the main part of the summer here. We have been getting heat domes here in BC which fries plants compared to normal summer without heat domes. I live at a higher coastal elevation in the Fraser valley so can get periods of snow where it hardly melts but just keeps adding snow to the base. I guess I need both in some capacity. So high tunnel to shed snow with shade cloth on the inside and low tunnel for cuttings. Low tunnel in another location.

You can build a high tunnel covered in plastic. Make the sides where they can either roll up, or by clamped up a couple or few feet for summer ventilation. Put shade cloth on the OUTSIDE of the plastic. Add or remove shade and/or plastic as needed to suit your plants and growing season.

If you don't spray your lawn you could collect the clippings and put them in your Arbbervity bed. That would keep the weeds down and retain moisture as well.

I have a few tiny Limelight Hydrangeas in quart size pots, they have single stems, only about 3, 4 inches tall. Can I: 1. Leave them outdoor this coming winter? I am in zone 7. 2. If I let them grow taller and taller, can I train them to be hydrangea trees (or hydrangea standard) by next year? Thanks,

1. Yes 2. You can continue growing them as standards next year but they won’t be ready for another year or 2 after that.

Have done a few boxwoods. They rooted for me fairly well, but I think took 4 years to grow to selling size. VERY slow.

Can you make a video dedicated to transitioning cuttings out of the misting station? (maybe you already have?) I've read that you should gradually decrease the misting frequency as part of the process. I suppose large nurseries have dedicated misting stations where all the cuttings go in at once and come out at once. In that case, reducing the misting frequency would be possible. However, that is not practical for small growers that are constantly moving new cuttings into, and rooted plants out of, the same misting station. I would imagine the keys to transitioning cuttings would be shade, high humidity, and frequent watering until they've hardened off enough to thrive in a sunnier, dryer location. It would be great if you could share your knowledge and experience on this topic.

Most of the time I just move them out to the edge of the mist for a couple weeks... still keeping them mostly shaded. After that, they go in under shade with regular, daily watering and they do well. The main thing is to not give them too much direct sun too soon... you will cook them.

They are under shade right now... but these are paniculatas and would be OK in full sun. I have some that are. The shade just makes the summer sun/heat a little less harsh on them.

I’m trying to propagate some hydrangeas from one that I have in my property. I was able to get 9 cuttings. At what point will I know if any of them have gotten a successful start? It’s been about 4 weeks now.

Very gently tug on one of them. If it's "stuck," it's developing roots.

Ok so I seen you planted your green giants in the ground and my question is how big do you plan on letting them get before you dig up? Are you goin to pot them after digging them up and sell them bare root or what?

Will dig them this winter and put in pots. Do occasionally sell a few bare root. Don't want to leave them in the ground any longer than that... they'll be grown together and be a pain to dig up.

My plan is to be a green giant farmer and slowly build from there…. Weeping willows is what I’ve mastered and been selling like crazy currently but it’s getting rough cause my next two weeks are 105 degree temp straight! Water is rough keeping in pots at the moment

How often do they get misted during the day? Does the mist run all day or periodically?

From about 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, they run 7 seconds every 10 minutes. They need to be dry by sunset sop they aren't set all night - that causes rot.

I have electric, sewer, water, and trash all wrapped in one utility bill for my home address. I just use my home water hose, from my single meter. Water use is not that high... in fact, my water fees never go up.

@@savvydirtfarmer My utilities are billed together also, our sewage rate is higher than our water rate. This drought and temps are making me consider a drip system and rain barrel storage. Stay hydrated and healthy.

Mulch does wonders for weed prevention. Even just a straw bale will help save hours of weeding. It also keeps soil cool. If you don’t cover it, nature will.

We usually mulch with our hardwood bark, Didn't get to it this year, and it's been a mess!

Hi. I looked up endless summer the original hydrangeas on the patent website. It looks like the patent has expired. I really want to propagate them. Any ideas if I’m correct?

Patents are in effect 20 years from the date of filing. So find the date and go forward from there. I haven't looked it up, but it's a common hydrangea so probably not too hard to find, which you may well have done already.
