Hope all is well for ya, and that you’re still doin the stuff you like. Your blades were always lovely. If you do ever decide to make a video again do be sure it’s for the sake of enjoying the process and making something you’re pleased with. I’m hoping to get back into blade smithing some day down the line when I can get the space for it, and when it comes time to make a razor I know where to look for some reference material.

I made a similar forge made from a R-133 cylinder My burner was a bit different design & I put a half thicjness fire brick in the bottom. As with all my forging equipment i sold it about 15 years ago so I may build my own once again. I have a great shop to work in for just maintaining the shop for it's owner. She has 2 gas forges & a coal forge along with a 50Lb. Mayer Bros & a 150Lb Beaudry Power hammer. along with all the other stuff I can keep busy a couple of days just keeping the machinery running! Back to your forge Great design!

I thought pretty hard about a fire brick floor, but I kind of wanted to try to cast the whole core this time. Casting the chamber like that is something I wanted to try. I am not sure if it was worth the effort or not, time will tell. Happy smithing

A piece of advice for the next cast (these do get consumed on the inside), the inner pipe should be split and made from the main pipe size and another, that slips in the two removable halves. That way, when you want to remove it, you won't struggle with it, and risk breaking some of the liner. Just my two cents on it.

I’m not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying the inner sleeve is split down the middle in two pieces with another slightly smaller sleeve inside these holding them together?

Hey friend really miss your videos. You single handedly got me interested in forging and making razors. It seems you're not going to put out any more videos. I was wondering what the chances we're you would sell your most inspired fan (me) your Japanese nakayama stone? If not, I understand. Kind of a big thing to ask for I know. But I would be a great steward of it. Please let me know If this is even a remote possibility. Thank you sir

Mine's pretty similar. And yup, I had trouble removing my pipes too. I used a piece of galvanised chimney pipe, and didn't have the foresight to use mould release. ;)

I am not sure the grease did very much, I thought about using sheet metal, but went with the pipe because I had it laying around.

I love this channel, glad I found it. I’m going to pick up a cheap used propane tank from fb market today. I like the concrete idea. I wonder if parchment paper would be better non-stick than grease? Ah, I’ll use both!

sorry but i am looking forward to the answer. I'm a big fan of vintage things, especially about this vintage razor. it fascinates me and makes me want to create something special but Vietnam is nothing but the stories told by my ancestors. I am missing information about steel process and material (steel type). I tried consulting some people like LEWIS RAZORS. but that's still not enough, I failed several times. PLEASE . WHAT IS THE BEST MATERIAL FOR 1 Razor.And IMPORTANT INFORMATION? I REALLY THANK YOUp

Is there a certain angle for the burner going into the forge that works better , or makes the flame swirl better ?
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 4 жыл бұрын
I like the swirl, I have used other forges where it blows straight in and hits the wall. I think the swirl helps lessen the hot spot, but both ways work. That being said I always have my burner flame swirl around.

Great project. Was your old furnace just wore out?
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 7 жыл бұрын
My old furnace is still chugging away, it works great for forging, but the floor of the furnace gets burned away when doing a lot of forge welding. The hot borax/flux used in welding eats away at the bottom of my old furnace and I have to repair it. This forge will be a lot more flux resistant with the thick cast walls. It will be used primarily for welding.

So 3 years in, how is the cast interior holding up? I'm midway though building my own forge from the same type of helium tank, and started to wonder about the cement more or less 'floating' on a bed of ceramic wool, and wondered if it might crack if jostled much.
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 4 жыл бұрын
the forge has held up very well, the interior is still solid, ends have a few small cracks. The forge does especially good at dealing with flux. When there is somebody in the shop that uses a lot of flux when welding I make sure to use this forge. This forge does not heat up as fast as my forge with a thin layer of cement, but once it is hot it works great. If I did it again I would get all of the paint off. I took forever to burn the paint off of the tank.
@Vikingwerk
@Vikingwerk 4 жыл бұрын
@@lewisrazors Glad to hear its holding up well! I made sure to get all the paint off mine before I even started; figured it would be easier while the tank was structurally sound, before I went cutting holes in it.

People blow themselves up all the time cutting into vessels like this. I used a steel trash can, trimmed about 1.5" from the refractory material level, then hammered the edge down. I've moved the foundry many times, and it has held up well. Also a loose roll of cardboard came out much easier. Anyways, your razors are awesome! Anyways,
