I basically did same thing for neighbor a few months back. She called local plumber and without opening it up quoted her big bucks for new water heater. Hers was only 5 years old. Been running fine since I cleaned it out. Thanks Steven!

Life expectancy of a water heater now days is 6-8 yrs The so called vulture plumbers you are referring to have had water heaters fail shortly after repairs and customer takes it out on them even though the plumber told them it's old and should be replaced! What is it 1500.00 bucks or so,,,,,, not only that a old water heater is not ver efficient

​@chrismallory3718 Either you have money to waste or you're naive. And a new water heater install is over $4000. Why not be trustworthy and try to fix first and tell them its a try. 2nd time can be more replacement parts digging deeper or a whole upgrade.

​@@Katana_00you must be a plumber and know something I do not. Water heaters are throw aways now a days and as I stated have short life expectancy. Plumbing is not easy and that's why plumbers make good money! Not everyone can do it and there is a lot more too it then most can comprehend

Good fix plus the green light that blinks is now about 5 times brighter than it was prior to cleaning it. Should be good from now on. That Bradford white brand is probably the best out there so I'd use it until it starts to leak. Especially since its on concrete.

Sometimes to reset those pilot powered digital valve control boards, you have to discharge the capacitors on that board.

Good temporary fix but the pilot assembly should be replaced. It appears somebody fixed something before because they wrote R-W on tank.

Is that a Bradford White? Had the same issue, pilot would go out then re-lite be fine for a couple of weeks then go out again. Changed the generator and went out after a week. I re-lite it again so far been good for a few weeks now, fingers crossed.

You have to be sure the thermopile is in a good position on that pilot flame as well. It sends milivolts to the gas valve. Edit: if you have a multimeter, you can check what milivolts it’s generating and reference the manufacturer to see if it’s the right value.

But high price for install cause just like anything for the convenience, you pay more. But if it's just you or someone else a water tank works best for short 15 min or less showers

If you keep changing it regularly when you got it then it may give you a couple more years to the longevity of the water heater and importantly it keeps water heating efficient namely you don’t get the problem of limescale building up at the bottom and creating an insulating barrier to water heating effectively. If you have not changed an anode rod for a while more than 10years then probably not worth changing the rod unless you completely flush the tank out and try to get out as much limescale residue out of the water heater by removing water tap at the bottom and get and suction as much of the limescale out. That’s a much bigger job as I say if it’s more than 10years old keep it running as long as possible and then replace it.

Cathodic protection is real - ask any boat owner. I use active (impressed current) cathodic protection by replacing the magnesium anode rod with a Corro-Protec unit.
