I built a powder coat oven with the dimensions of 4ft ( width ) by 4ft ( length ) x 7.5 feet ( height ) 3 and 5/8 inch walls.... Skinned on inside with mineral wool insulation . I have a 250kbtu -400kbtu propane heater ( Mr heater model number MH400FAVT ) heating the oven . For my controls system I have a inkbird ITC-106PH PID hooked up to a inkbird solid state relay that controls a gas solenoid that I plumbed into the heater itself. The oven has a k style thermocouple that I have tried in different locations in the oven to try to fix my issue. My issue is that I have a large flucionation in temps when my oven gets to 400 . It actually overshoots and heats to about 430 degrees . Now another issue is that when the temp drops below 400 and calls for heat I can hear the gas solenoid opening and heater getting power and turning on the blower but the gas doesn't ignite for about 4 seconds which causes more temp influx I imagine but not sure . I have tried the PID in auto tune mode ... Factory settings ... And a couple pid adjustments recommended by a youtuber. I'm wondering if there is a way to maintain the temp better. Is my propane heater too big ? Do I have to wire a jumper of some kind to have constant ignite in my torpedo heater ? Do I have the wrong heater for the application ? This heater does have an internal thermostat . Thanks for reading this and thank you for your time and insight .

So did that small of a heater work for your oven I have a 4x4x6. same setup but a 125000 btu heater.. it takes 4 mins to heat to 400 degress..was told not to use anything smaller.. just ordered a commercial Carlin LP burner.

It did work, took about 10 mins to heat. Probably wasn’t the most efficient. I would go with a bigger heater if I ever built another oven.

I have a question on how you hook it up to your pid, are you using powder from 12v converter to the pid and then attaching your solenoid?
@kevinshively5 жыл бұрын
It's my understanding that when the PID gets a signal from the thermocoupler for heat it triggers the solid state relay which activates the "powerstrip" or 125v outlet. When the outlet gets power it sends voltage to the heater to ignite and also power to the solenoid to open up the gas flow.
@kevinshively5 жыл бұрын

I have a mr heater 250 k to 400 k hooked up to my PID... It has an auto ignite but it's not continuous ignite . When my PID calls for more heat it takes a little while for my heater to ignite it . Which causes overshooting of temps . I just need it to ignite when the pid opens the gas valve. Do I have to change any inside wiring

I would think not.. should function the same.

Have few questions as planning on building oven shortly and can see you have quite a bit of experience with it already. My oven side is determined by space I've got and products that will be placed there for coating so external dimensions will be 3.4x7x9ft (W-H-D). The door is at the narrow side. Do you reckon the 60k btu heated is sufficient? also, where would you place the blower in the middle or the back and then use the fan to blow the heat from the ceiling down above the door? Where to put the exhaust pipe then? Finally it is build outside... And insulation wise or stud width I would plan to use the same thickness as yours. Would really appreciate your advice on this! Thanks!
@boldcitydesignsjax6 жыл бұрын
I would step up to the 120 btu. That way it doesn’t struggle to keep up. I would still place it in the bottom. Heat rises we all know. Let the heat rise and force the cold air down and out of the exhaust at the lowest point. That way there is always fresh hot air and forcing out the coldest air first.
