I like the tie to be around the belt area. in the middle or at the top edge is fine for me. whenever I get a new tie, be it short or long, I always try to tie it a few times before the day I'm going to use it. that way I know how to tie it when the day comes, and I don't risk being late for work, because I had problems with the tie 👐

One of the most distracting looks on a man is when his tie peeks out from under his jacket. Some might consider it casual and a good look. Personally, I think it breaks the clean lines and men should start wearing vests again. Bring on back the styles of the 1920's!
@alexdickey95424 жыл бұрын
Well when men wore waistcoats daily, it made sense to tie the tie a shorter length to avoid it from peeking out from below the waistcoat. I guess tie length became longer once the waistcoat went out of style and 2 piece suits were in.
@nikanikuradze74372 жыл бұрын
@@alexdickey9542 if wearing a wasitcoat, especially a more high breasted one there was no need for long ties since it would all be covered by the waistcoat anyways, so ties were just long enough to tuck into the waistcoat below without popping out

Fantastic video I agree that the proper length would be just above the waist band this length give your look total balance if for example one end of the tie extends far beyond the other it simply throws your attire off balance people eyes will be drawn to that fact and no matter how well coordinated your outfit is when your accessories are at war with your suit in this case just doesn't look well symmetry is important when putting a look together when something looks out of place then you have defeated your purpose thanks for the video fine summation.

Personally - front blade tip just hitting the bottom of the belt. Rear blade just above the belly button, or a few inches past the keeper is fine. Since I am over 6 foot, this means a 63 inch tie. Also since I am a bigger guy - a 3.5 inch width on the front blade. Not every place sells Long ties with 3.5 widths. Custom made is wonderful.

I'm 6'3" tall, it's hard for me to find ties where I live that are long enough to have a knot that looks proportionate, and still retain an acceptable difference between the length of the blades, often, I will use tie pin or bar to keep the short back blade from peeking out and looking unsightly. Not always, but with some of my ties that's my only option. I prefer my front blade within an inch of the top of my trousers, that way it's never too short, but still has a crisp outline unobstructed by my trousers or belt.
@n0c0mmentsplease6 жыл бұрын
cmasailor I'm 6'0" and it's quite hard to get a tie that wouldn't be too long when wearing it with normal waisted trousers, not these modern rags which are meant to be worn on privates or even lower.

From what I've read, a larger knot is most ideal for a spread collar shirt. And given that larger knots take up more of the tie length, I find that I barely have enough material to place it in the tie-stay. PS I find large and elaborate knots. My go-to knot is the double Windsor.

The knot that looks best is dependent on your size. A big knot on a big man can look great compared to a small knot and vice versa for skinny or shorter guys. I personally like the tie to be 1cm above the waste (still below belly button) and the back part to be about 2-3cm higher than the front. I'm a tall guy with a thick neck and athletic build so the classic look does well for me. So the thick not is the way to go and the tie has to come from a big and tall store. Pick a knot first that works for your size and shape. Then go on the hunt for the correct tie to do it with. Switching knots to adjust for length after you buy the tie can result in fail.

I am 34 but like the old school look of short tie. I wear pants slightly high and tie is 1 to 1 1/2 inches above. I use my first 2 fingers. If the back of the tie is too long you can tuck it in the shirt through where you button the shirt.

I've read that the probable origin of tie is from Croatian mercenaries and it served the sole purpose to be an emergency bandage. So every soldier had a bandage in case of injury - you can imagine medic could not have enough for everyone, right. So the origin might have been actually very practical rather than pure decorative as you stated.
@G1NZOU2 жыл бұрын
That's kind of how I remember the Scout neckerchief being for, you could use it as a bandage or sling if needed, or really any purpose requiring a cloth and knot.

another thing that can affect length is his weight. Personally I got a belly (trying to lose it but I got one and it's likely here to stay for years to come) and I like a good full Windsor knot as it helps balance out how I look when I wear a tie. I've tried picturing myself with a bowtie and I feel (personally) that a larger man (in the waist region not height) wearing a bowtie is basically giving in because when I see pictures of such men it tends to draw more attention to the fact they have a larger midsection/have a gut rather than balance how they look.

I have a thought about 0:39 - Although the history of tie places it as pure decoration, could it not be suggested that over time, function was infused into tie design, making it _more_ than just decoration today? I ask this because I believe the modern tie does serve a distinct purpose: A shirt button cover (typically, a tie that covers any more or any less than your shirt buttons is already considered generally taboo) and something to block the elements from getting down your collar. To take it to a logical extreme, if the tie is purely decoration then why are clip-on ties not more acceptable? Thoughts?

It seems to me that clothes manufacturers are consciously making tie lengths shorter and pocket squares smaller in a bid to save on material costs. I have bought around 30 ties over the past 3 years and not one of them is long enough for both ends to meet at belt height, whichever knot I use. Only about ten of my ties are long enough to tie a full Windsor and still get the tail of the tie in the keeper loop.

You need to rethink how you wear a tie. Here's what the Master Michael Drake had to say... "The tie is important not only because it’s so much the focus of attention, but because it’s more symbolic than utilitarian. The best ties are hand made, never stitched by machine. You have a suit made in the round, and so the tie should be three-dimensional as well. Avoid extremes: no wider than nine centimetres and no narrower than seven. Eight will look right on any occasion. The pattern should not be overly designed, with too many colours, or too shiny; although solid satin in navy, grey or purple is fine for the evening, for a more formal look. The time-honoured tradition of lighter coloured ties in the morning, a little darker in the afternoon and darker still in the evening is hard to beat. Seventy percent of the ties we produce at Drake’s of London are shades of blue. It’s always a good starting point. There are only two knots worth considering, the four in hand and the half Windsor, the second also being a good standby if the tie is too long or a slightly fuller knot is required. Best not to use the loop or ‘keeper’ at the back of the tie, to remain nonchalant. It’s ok to see part of the tail. Avoid a look that’s too stiff and rigid - think the Duke of Windsor or Snr. Gianni Agnelli rather than your local bank manager, whose ties will often look ironed flat. Wearing a tie that is either too long or too short is another give away. In an ideal world the tie should reach the top of the trouser waistband with both the front and tail finishing at the same length. If this can’t be achieved, better to have the tail slightly longer than the front. Often the rise of the trousers can cause the tie to be the wrong length." Michael Drake founded Drake’s in 1977. Today it is the largest independent maker of handmade ties in England.

I like his channel, but this is one is so self evident and everything goes type of video it wasn’t worth the time making it. In Britain the standard, and correct method, is to the trouser waist level only and the back blade is tucked in the front blade hook, or keeper, and should never be seen. Today’s modern way’s are not traditional but if you’re young enough perhaps it’s for you, although frowned on at a gentleman’s club in London and my regiment club. I didn’t see the point of this video.

I don't want to disappoint or scare you, but there are countries besides Great Britain and places besides your clubs. But even in your clubs, I suppose men don't come in the same height, as well as their trousers. Shotgunmad xl The combo of long tie and high trousers could be it too. Thing is, since he's taping up his ties like @3:55 that suggests it's barely long enough in the first place. Or maybe he's tying the front of the tie long for some other reason. I'm a little taller than him, so having the back tail of the tie too short is something that happens with regular length ties. Now why he doesn't wear tie bars is another question. His company sells them. I'm sure he's seen them all over the place in his life. I'm genuinely curious.
