Proper Seagull Handling Techniques

A Seagull flew into my line and got tangled up, which is a common occurrence when surf fishing, its easy to unhook and release them unharmed if you first cover their eyes/beak, support catch and release!

Nice catch ! I caught a Great Blue Haron years ago and I had to do the same thing. It was the biggest coincidence of my life. I was looking the other way and I didn't see the Haron take off. Just as I casted across a narrow river, the Haron flew right into my line. So I had to reel him in and untangle him. Lucky I had a friend with me, I held his beak while my buddy untangled him. He/she walked away while looking back at me. That was a thrill of a lifetime, seeing and handling one up close. It's beak was about 6" long and I was afraid of getting pecked. Cheers

Nice to see you taking care to do it right and get the gull released with as little damage as possible. Have seen some guys mishandle /abuse the gulls. Nice work, dude.

Cool video. That tip about covering his eyes really does the trick, I guess! Hope I don't have to do this, but at least I won't be scared if it happens.

Real good idea for a video. Thanks. I never had the balls to touch em before. Helped a few here and there, with a high level of anxiety. This makes me more confident. Fun story, one time I saw a seagull trying to take off from the water, twenty feet out. Every time, it barely got its head up before it dove back in head first. I thought it was eating until it seemed unnatural. I then figured the fishermen up the beach tangled it up and left it to fend for itself. A moment after that annoying thought, I watched the seagull try one more time to get its head out of the water, and I finally saw the greedy bastard had its beak stuck in between the shells of a huge live clam. Tough pickins

Yeah, i caught a seagull this summer too while fluke fishing. We took a rag, put it over its eves and untangled it while it was calm.

This summer I had a seagull eat my bait the second it hit the water, it hooked itself in the neck tried to fly away and got the line stuck around another seagulls neck almost instantly killing both of them

Feeding one now with a hook sticking out of his mouth, looks like hook has back of upper and lower mouth, and affecting his eye a lot. He can hardly open mouth to eat this bread. Big and strong still, but I can't see a solution... Frustration!

I find pelicans far more annoying to hook because the stupid bastards dive into my lures and of course get all hooked in the neck pouch. TERRIBLE time getting it out.
