A lot of people don't realise that you can get cordless saws with the blade either on the left or the right side. Both have advantages and disadvantages and in this video I explain what they are.

Never even realised this, owning both the plunge saw and cordless saw, both makitas... I guess that, when I felt the base was unstable, I just came at it from the opposite side of the board? The moment I saw the Milwaukee one I thought: that must be Keith's saw 😄

Agree. I'm left-handed and when I'm trimming of an inch of a board with a left-blade saw I support the board with my weak hand and guide the saw with my strong hand. The wide baseplate on the right suits me. But I've got a right-blad saw too. 🙃

I got my Skillsaw in 1981 as a 16 year old apprentice. I can still smell it now out of the box, the black and gold colour looked too good to use on a building site. I'm 60 now and still a carpenter and it's always intrigued me why the blade was never on the left and now I know. I would have taken my fingers off on the first go as that "know it all" apprentice. Great video, always appreciate when you post.

Another informative video on something that I should have knew, but had never paid that much attention to. My tip to save fingers on a leftt hand saw and help in other obvious ways, cut all wood / sheets on a insulation sheet. Fully supports work work, no balancing Nothing drops on floor. No damage to end of wood as weight snaps last 10mm or so off. or having to use other hand to try and catch. Impossible to touch blade with fingers.

I have both blade right and left saws. I agree that when you are cutting off the end of a table or saw horses and your offcut is unsupported then blade right is more stable. For blade left, if you are right handed, you want to support your offcut. You can cut on a bench and place scrap wood blocks underneath your workpiece to support both the work side and the waste side. You could also put some kind of foam board underneath your entire workpiece. One issue with my blade right saw is that the motor protrudes on the left. So when i use a speed square as a guide and cut full depth, the speed square edge can interfere with the motor, which is frustrating. Either right or left work for me as long as i set up my cut appropriately. I just have to set up my cut differently depending on whether i am cutting with blade right or left if i want a fully supported cut and if i want to use a guide.

having your blade and handing on the same side is basically always safer and more accurate. It is slightly slower to line up cuts but that is pretty marginal. The big discrepancy is free handing rips, having opposite handing lets you see the blade and cut sheets quickly and accurately with a bit of practice. Compared to setting up a fence its a big time saver, its really aimed at contractors. From a DIY point of view they seem easier but will probably give you worse results

I’m looking for a cordless saw for convenience but From a safety point of view - being familiar with power tools and how they react allows you to develop muscle memory over time - where as swapping and changing on a regular basis something as basic as which side the blade is on might introduce another element of risk.!? Especially with a circular saw.! Also even with eye protection wood chips and loose bits of carbide are a definite hazard when you’re peering directly at a cut line…. Great video and very informative. But I think I ‘ll go for a R/H blade just to keep things simple..👍

DeWalt’s cordless Left blade is 6.5”. Their cordless Right blade is 7.25”…I bought Right for the deeper capacity. You don’t need to see the blade making the cut if you measure and use a framing square (or spirit level for long cuts) as a guide fence. Oh yeah and Right side blade throw chippings clear instead of all over the work.

Am I crazy, or can a broad amount of these issues be solved by just rotating the workpiece 180 degrees or tackling it from the other side; ie: now placing the "waste" on the opposing side so that you can support the workpiece. Obviously not a solution for the issues where the blade is too close to your hand, or on something that's already fixed to another surface. As a lefty, I've become quite accustomed to moving around myself or a piece after someone right-handed has been working on it. Sometimes the cleanest, safest approach is to just stop and see if the solution is just to move yourself, your guide or your piece.

There's no safety issue with either saw if you are using it the way you are supposed to with your hands on both the handles, rather than trying to guide the saw with your hand along the side of the saw, both types of saws will chop your fingers off if you do that and get your hands near the blade, so that's not an excuse for a left or right blade saw by any means, that's a poor practice problem by the operator. I have both types of saws, and don't try to guide the saw with fingers along the side, that's a dumb idea in the first place....clamp your workpiece, and use both hands on the saw, and you'll get straight cuts regardless if you have a left or right blade saw...the lighter saws are great but they tend to wander easier as they don't have as much weight to them to keep them steadily moving forward. Both styles of saw have their advantages, but buying one or the other based on your hands gravitating towards the side of the saw for guidance isn't one of them...that's just an improper tool use practice by the operator, and a terrible habit to have learned. Nice thing with the cordless tools is you aren't stepping all over the cord, or getting it caught on your workpiece, usually a bigger issue with a rip cut though....The disadvantage is they're typically lighter weight than the corded versions because they're supposed to be more portable, but the lighter weight seems to allow these saws to wander more, and they're also somewhat smaller too which makes the wandering problem more substantial.

Nice video, thank you. Just bought an Aldi 40V brushless motor saw, which to my dismay turned out to be a "leftie" there's a switch for the laser under the handle, which you have to press every time you use the saw, actually when it's running, totally stupid design, and unless you're holding the saw with your left hand, there's no way that you can get at the switch. Ideal for a "south paw" but if like most folks you're right handed, a bit awkward , bujt for £40 a very good saw!

Traditionally circular saw blade was always on the left. UK is only country in Europe in which you struggle to buy normal left bladed saw. I always believed it was due to Brits being "unique"... driving on "other side", carpets in the toilet, roundabouts with traffic lights or separate water taps... reversed circular saw made sense then ;)

I (DiY,, not professional) always used right sided saws. Perhaps, first of all, because all my own saws were corded (though I have seen left-sided corded saw !). Never felt comfortable with left-sided, since never knew were to get my left arm - going for knob across a blade (and thus obscuring the view, which kind of the main point of left sided ones) is so weird. I have no problems leaning a bit to the right to look at the blade, while both my arms (right on a trigger, left on a knob) are safely away from the blade, and not crossing over.

For a blade left saw, I guess the rear handle configuration with the dust port that ejects the saw dust to the right (away from your hands) makes a bit more sense... But in Europe, at least, you can get only the cordless versions... Corded versions seem to be a thing only in US, west coast especially, where the Skilsaw was born.

6:40 bearing down hard on the saw with your whole arm and hand in the path of the blade looks scary. I would say in that case, you could secure your work piece and get your left hand on the front handle as you said was your normal method. As far as orientation of the blade, being left-handed, I've had the issue of the blade being close to my right hand all my working life. AND still have most my fingers. (kidding.. they're all gone 😂) Only recently when buying a cordless did I have the choice.

Perhaps this is a US vs UK thing. I have a late seventies corded true SkillSaw and it is blade to the left as were all the saws I saw on the construction job site back then. I didn’t even know that they weren’t all that way until I purchased a cordless saw a few years back. I personally have never had an issue getting my fingers near the blade in my fifty years using it. Of course I always have the cutoff/waste piece to the right of the cut and stabilize the good piece with my free left hand. Probably due to fifty years of muscle memory I find the right hand blade awkward.

3:18 - Er... why don't you just turn the board around (i.e., so the board stays on the right and the off-cut on the left), so the wider part of the base stays on the board the whole time? If you're using power tools you should always be clamping the piece, so it's not like you need your other hand anyway (in fact, you should probably keep _both_ on the saw). I guess you could simply make a wider base if you really want to hold on to pieces with your left hand.

You want the blade and waste from cut blowing away from you, so if your right hand you need a right hand saw, if your left hand you want a left hand saw, it's safer for flying material to be blown away from your eyes not towards them... just learn how to use saw correctly it takes time, if . All saws have points you look through so you don't look at blade .

Right hand locations keeps the spinning cutting danger further away from your body for right handed persons.

Can't see the logic in having a left hand one (unless you are left handed) - the safety issue being the main one. Of course if you are left handed and prefer to work opposite to the traditional right handed way then they are perfectly safe. But I doubt they were made for that reason. Me thinks offering a left handed one was more to do with marketing than functionality. I can't see any value in owning one of each - familiarity with working routine and pattern go a long way to increasing safety and accuracy.

You are not making Any allowance for us left handers, who make up a good percentage of the population. I have been looking for a circular saw with the blade on the left for literally decades, but do not want a battery powered one.

Hi Was wondering depending on if your left or right handed would this no dictate the side the off cut is on or could you not cut from the opposite side

🖐️ Yes you can go down that route but it can make life a bit tricky , also having the space to do a cut on an opposing side is big part of it . Flipping things over and doing a cut also must be totally accurate , remembering that you actually working upside-down .

You've made the erroneous assumption that all your viewers are right-handed, it seems. They're not - us lefties need cosseting as well on occasion.

Thanks Stuart, I'd never really thought about this before as I haven't seriously looked at buying a new circular saw for a number of years apart from a Tracksaw and as you said they're all RH, however thinking about it, being left handed the LH would feel more natural to me ! Your safety point is an important consideration, I don't use my circular saws that regularly, but when I do I try to focus on the safety first when deciding how to make the cut - again it's not natural to me as I use a handsaw with my Left hand and so clamp the piece with my Right.

For support issues caused by the side of the blade, just go on the other side of what ever you’re working on.

My cordless is right‐bladed. I can still see the blade cut without relying on notch. If you can see the blade without contorting then blade on right side always

Just wondering they made left and right handed circlure saws to help people, for example people who are left handed be much safer to use circlure saw on left side than the right, as they use us the left more than the right hand, same other way round. But I might be wrong with this thought

For me a being right handed, I chose makita because the blade is on the left. Not all brands manufacture right and left hand saws.

When you need to just trim a sliver off, just cut it in the opposite direction, that way more of the shoe is resting on the board. You'll need to clamp it down of course as you won't be able to hold it.

To suggest that a saw is unstable because the sole plate is unsupported is quite ridiculous. It doesn't take a lot of thinking to turn the piece round and cut from the other side. 🤔🙄😖
