Great video, I've been a professional carpenter for over 30 years and the advice and methods here are spot on. Only thing I would suggest is fitting a lock to take a euro cylinder. Much easier and cheaper to change if the key is ever lost.

I've done this so many times - but it was nice to sit back and just watch someone else... and I really loved the very BCUs. I saw the steel tips but I still cringe when I see hammers being used... but I also have to smile at my years-old conditioning... Looking forward to what you deal with in 2022

I live in the United States so we don’t really use Mortis locks and residential on new builds. They’re on older houses but when I’ve installed the regular cylindrical locks, I’ve used a hammer drill and drilled into the brick in basement and put super long screws with anchors so it’s hard to kick the door in because the screws go into the brick or the cinderblock behind the frame.

Great stuff, enjoyed watching that. It is so tempting to use what is in your hand to remove the protective film. I keep an assortment of hardwood, plastic and copper 'things' handy for that purpose; but, it takes discipline to go and get them. However, I worked out that the amount of time I spend arguing with myself to get them is greater than going to get them. :)

Another informative and enjoyable watch, many thanks! I'd add one small point about doors, many of the 'light weight' interior doors have very limited amounts of structural wood into which to fit hinges and locks, close attention is required to the labeling on the doors the ensure locks are mounted in the right place.

Stuart, Thank you very much for this. But sometimes we dont have the luxury of being able to remove the door- which looks like it makes it so much easier. One tip i did learn was to turn the key on the mortise so it stuck out when fitting the mortise lock in. if there were any error it made it so much easier to help get the lock out if it was in too tight. Also I agree with other viewer who suggested that you show viewers also how to reverse the catch if required. Great work- as ever- thanks

Enjoying your channel, one suggestion , sure you are aware of this. if you can fix a longer screw into the strike plate side or in to one of the hinge holes it makes the door more secure to forced entry, easier to do on a wood framed building

The drilled holes are not center-aligned so for me that defeats the purpose of using a narrower bit to "avoid making a wider..." mortice cavity. When chiseling out the hole you'll get a width the length of how much the furthest holes are apart. Humm. I like the tip for drilling vertically down (using the attached 2x4) though I've seen other (most) videos where people drill on a door that already has been hung (more unconfortable, I think, but a few make their cases for doing it this way). BTW I'm about to intall my first mortise lock so I'm watching a few videos on this. I pick up various hints from most of them.Thanks to all.

I'm not a carpenter but fixed a few recently. Hanged a complete door from scratch few years ago. My God never again. I was exhausted afterwards. I did it by myself. A plain wooden door. I cut everything out and did the hinges. Put two high security deadlocks on it as well. On my own property this was. To save a ton of chiseling , in my opinion you really need the 20 and 21 drill bits. I could find a 21 though. The recommended 19 and 20 makes for a lot of very awkward chiseling and noisy banging. I found. Btw is this such a tool yet as an electric Chisel because omg would this make things easier. Lol. Also they should make the hole in the lock body on the frame much bigger. Because it takes some skill and experience to line it up properly with the lock in the door. A few millimetres out and your stuffed lol. It won't lock

More great tips, I really like the clamp a verticle piece timber to help the straight drilling! Stupid question: drilling a pilot hole, then starting the screw of with electric screwdriver, why do you finish that screw manually? (if the question makes sense!!) Ohh and merry Christmas Stuart
@abscomm

So that you don't get the "drill driver chatter" when the screw seats itself, that would just damage the screw head and the driver bit.

@ProperDIY

Thanks. You would notice I was using a impact driver to screw them in. Unlike a drill driver that has a clutch and may stop once the screw is in far enough, an impact driver has a huge amount of power and can spin very fast so is possible to completely strip the tread or drive it in far too deep damaging everything around it - hence getting it close but finishing it off by hand.

When it comes to cleaning off the plastic that gets in the logo, rather than using a blade use toothpicks; their points are sharp enough to lift the plastic out without marking the metal, and cheap as chips so they say.
