Properly Lighting a Backflow Incense Burner

First locate the tip of the incense cone and light it. You then need to gently blow out the flame or fan the flame until it disappears. The cone will then transform glowing red and release a pleasant-smelling fragrance with its smoke.
Next, allow the fragrance to release so that the cone can slowly begin dropping the incense smoke.
Place the backflow incense cone on top of the burner. Allow the incense cone to run for about 2 minutes before the backflow effect begins. It is important that you open a window or allow some air so circulate the area.
Please don't burn incense unattended. Enjoy!

Hi Randon, sorry to hear your cones are going up in the air. This might happen if you over light the cones, or don't allow for enough time for the cone to burn down. Here's an article the I think might help you with lighting and placing the cones to get the best flow effect. I also want to note, you'll get a more dense flow effect if the room is more still. However, I would recommend some sort of ventilation, like a window open. Light for 10-15 seconds don’t touch it with your hands once it’s lit, they can get as hot as coal so handle with long tweezers, hold the incense cone on the burner in place with the tweezers when you blow it out so it doesn’t fall on your desk, sometimes you may have to put paper under the burner so it doesn’t stain the surface of your table

What am I missing? You lit the cone and set it on the burner. How do people not know that’s what you do? Mine sucks! There can be NO air movement near it. No talking, no fans in the room, no heat or a/c blowing, nothing. If there is then it just blows around. It doesn’t “waterfall”.

It's the same principal as a chimney, where cooler air is drawn in to the fire- place which pushes the smoke upwards. Here that process is upside down where the ember draws in the cool air from the top which in turn forces out the smoke through the pre-made hole in the cone.

Same. From what I've read the cones that come with the burners are generally a bit crap. I like the smell of mine but they burn very fast and make a sticky residue on the burner and on the surface spreading further than the little mat it came with :')

Why light it and then put it in place? - I generally put mine in place and then light it, as I don't want to be holding a lit thing if I don't have to. I only have the smaller cones, so this would be particular difficult for me to do without igniting my fingers.
