The Oast house is fab, so well done and executing Sarah’s idea of the upside-down house.
@NYCHeartandSoul4 жыл бұрын
It seems like the biggest affront to the house was removing all the mantel pieces. Sweet couple but they were totally unprepared to take on a renovation. Losing the mantels takes away all the charm. I’m surprised the council didn’t react to that. I guess they didn’t know! Oast house however is a gem. Bravo! I would love to live there.

@@inesolujic2534 You must have found it strange that someone called Karen was on the receiving end of a power-hungry curmudgeon's strictures. And maybe even stranger that another Karen gasped on hearing that the couple were forced to retain rotting wood. Such regulations are insane.

Listed buildings are a nightmare structurally and financially. My sis learnt that at a cost.
@katrinascreationscrafting6 жыл бұрын
I don't get the grade 2 listing issues. The Conservation Agency is doing nothing to restore or maintain these buildings, they're just letting them fall down . Any improvements that a buyer does is better than letting it fall into ruin. So, why make it so difficult on the buyer?
@trudiprigge18834 жыл бұрын
This is so true! One would think the conservation officers/dept would do as much as they could to make life easier for the people who are willing to improve places like this. It is sad to see how they become the cause of the downfall.
@paulosullivan34723 жыл бұрын
Yes England is losing so much of its history because conservation officers wont allow the buildings to be renovated. I live in a building which has some parts which are medieval in the basement, some bits like the outhouse which is Georgian and some parts which are Victorian. My house is still here because people kept living in it and maintaining/rebuilding it, thats how you maintain history.

Conservation is great when it's NOT EXTREME. When it's asinine (as I find in it in THESE 2 instances), then it's a case of The Tail Wagging The Dog. The law should be that the oven and the press be PRESERVED, but why not find a place that can actually USE them? Why should they be forced upon people that are trying to preserve a house but for whom these 'appliances' are useless?? It makes no sense. It is laziness on the part of the Preservation Society that they are ONLY in charge of laying down the law, but there are no measures taken for the re-distribution of these fantastic appendages of history.

@@cappsginny699 Good question. But seriously... if THEY (anyone) love their purple, then that is all that matters. We all resonate with different colours. @andreaandrea67163 жыл бұрын
@nova00boss I'm actually very PRO-conservation and think it's important to not let history be lost. However, in many cases, the time that's wasted (and the money it costs) waiting for permits, being refused, applying AGAIN, dissuades many people from even trying with listed buildings and the result is that many of these places are then lost AS A RESULT of the conservation officers, rather than working WITH the people who are trying to renovate, work AGAINST them. Not to whitewash them. It's just the same-old-same-old; People in positions of power often abuse that power. On the other side, people who don't have the money to PROPERLY renovate, should go into a different business.
