Look up Grant Petty Vs Jeremy Young to see why you can't edit Prores RAW in Resolve. The co founder of Atomos used to work at Blackmagic. He signed a non competition agreement and when he left and set up Atomos Grant took him to court. So it is politics, but not in the way you thought.

I made a video about this topic some time ago too. It's sad that after all this time, the problem still persists. There is software to convert your prores raw file to cinema dng, but we all know the process is long, painful, and you need massive hard drive space. Thanks for the video! Awesome job. Hopefully someone at Adobe can make a recommendation to add white balance and tint changes.

ProRes RAW in Davinci Resolve, if done properly, would be pretty much perfect for anyone nitpicky about conserving details in lowlight videography. But it seems like all we have right now are choices between different sets of compromises. Thank you for highlighting this!

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic, will never, ever do a thing to help Jeremy Young, an ex-employee of Blackmagic. Plenty of articles on it. There are other things about Jeremy Young that make me conclude I would never trust Jeremy Young either. Grant’s track record, on the other hand, in supporting the film, broadcast and videography sectors is extraordinary.

Ha! I remember I was so excited for when Prores Raw was announced and looked up info on it several times a week and asking myself the questions: "What will you be able to do with it? This will change everything!" etc etc. I gave up Proresraw and Premiere to get better RAW controls with the format when it passed year 3-4 since they started "supporting" it, and I jumped to Davinci instead. Thankfully Resolve supports my Nikons RAW formats right away

I’m one of those poor souls that has an atomic ninja V & edits in resolve. The best workaround I’ve found is using Compressor to convert the ProRes raw to Prores4444. IMO both of them being 12 bit codecs i’m getting the benefits of more color info & still have yet to find what I’m gaining editing the RAW vs 12bit prores4444 (I know debayering in post is part of it, but ProRes raw & Braw both do partial debayering in camera/record) it’s a good workaround until I can replace with a video assist

I'm so ready for Sony to update the FX3 to support BRAW over HDMI but we have to wait until September 2025 to get that which absolutely blows. I like the bm video assist way more than the ninja V because you can record to SD cards. But I love the idea of recording weddings in raw just like I record audio in 32 bit float. Especially with how finicky slog3 can be sometimes having that raw wiggle room is ideal.

The biggest reason is that the CEO and founder of Atomos, Jeromy Young, used to be an engineer at BlackMagic. Grant and Jeromy hate each other. Or let’s say, Grant hates him for leaving the company. He may or may not have taken technology and poached staff with him.

This is the whole reason I bought Blackmagic Video assist 12g instead of the Atomos Ninja. If I shoot raw, I want the ability to actually use it in my NLE of choice 😂 Also the compression options with PRR are pretty limited, whereas being able to go all the way to 12:1 compression in BRAW while still producing an excellent image is fantastic! I've started using BRAW in 12:1 compression for a lot of my commercial and corporate work, and it's been brilliant.

@kevin-e5h5tАй бұрын
Conversely, Blackmagic is working with Apple (the ProRes people) to make a stereoscopic cinema camera for their 3D Virtual Reality Headsets. Go figure. I never considered Atomos for it's monitor/recorders because it's HDMI port did not work with all cameras with a HDMI output, not because of ProRes (even though it was reported to crash all the time). I have only ever had BMD cameras and DaVinci Resolve Studio, which has been fully built up from scratch. Both Apple and Adobe Editors have disparate, stitched together apps, plugins and features that they harvested from other makers.

I think it also has to do with the cameras from BMD. Braw helped put their cameras on the map. It also helps move users to Resolve and in particular the paid version of Resolve. ProRes Raw is typically a superior raw format to Braw. It’s visually more like real raw video vs Braw and it’s also hardware accelerated on Apple Silicon which helps it perform really well. If ProRes raw is much better than some users might start to question buying BMD cameras. They will use cameras that provide better or different options like IBIS or auto focus or 16 stops of dynamic range. Aspects of cameras BMD just cannot compete with right now. Braw working really well with Resolve helps keep users in the BMD ecosystem. Supporting PeoRes raw makes users aware they don’t need to stay in that ecosystem. I could be wrong as well. No matter the actual reason it’s not a technical reason. Apple would happily license ProRes raw to BMD. This is most likely a political situation and it sucks. Instead of criticizing Apple, users need to start putting BMD on the spot. Start requesting this and demand it pointing out they know it’s all BMD holding this back. More reviewers need to call this out as BS instead of Apple always getting the blame. Apple FCP in turn doesn’t support Braw for no other reason then they will not write support for any proprietary raw format. Canon and Red wrote their own support for FCP. Any other camera manufacturer is welcome to work with Apple to support their raw formats. BMD is more than welcome and capable of writing their own support for FCP but they refuse to for what I believe the same reasons as above. If Braw works great on FCP and so does ProRes raw then users might start moving away from Braw and BMD hardware. It makes their ecosystem less necessary.

Well, this problem seems to be solved, sort of, in the near future for Sony users who can record in Blackmagic RAW for the FX-6 and FX-9 and most likely this will be followed by the FX-3 and perhaps the FX-30. This might not only give a boost to Sony but also for Davinci Resolve as a platform to edit Sony footage. And of course it will make also make the Blackmagic RAW recorders much more populair. On the other hand it seem to be a bid blow to Adobe. If Sony and Apple are starting to prefer working with Blackmagic then there is a lot of power shifting towards Blackmagic.

All Atomos would have to do is add cinemaDNG to their monitors and things would be better for everyone. I wish Lumix, and all these other companies that are getting raw internally would also offer cDNG as well. Again, Nikon who owns Red is the gatekeeper of raw now. Consumers really are getting screwed. You're correct. I think Atomos is just as evil as red was.

Also, if these companies cannot make a deal, I think creators and influencers should collectively call for boycotts of companies who are making all of our lives harder (and more expensive). Do some activism and ally with like Gerald Undone, and others. Consumers need a seat at the negotiating table. This video could be the start of good things if you can organize with other influencers. Also, the subscription editing model has to completely go. There's competition and then there's pettiness.

While the feud between Atomos and Blackmagic is unfortunate (childish?), is Apple playing the same game with Adobe? Why can't Premiere Pro have the same level of controls that FinalCut has when working with ProRes RAW? Does Apple expect people to give up Premiere Pro for FinalCut? More people are leaving Premiere Pro for Resolve, so it makes sense Adobe could retain some of those by offering full control of ProRes RAW within Premiere. It's games like this that lead to lose-lose situations for more people than the few who benefit from these proprietary "standards".
