My grandparents lived in Laurens and Great Falls, respectively. When visiting them, we'd go to Greenville a lot. After I moved to Germany I'd fly into Greenville Airport (usually via Philadelphia or Charlotte) to visit them. They've long since passed on, but thanks so much for the memories! ❤

As a person from NY, and lived and traveled all up and down the east coast(from Maine to Florida) and midwest (Milwaukee/Chicago to Dallas), I often describe Greenville like Goldilocks porridge, its "just right." Not too fast, not too slow. The main con I think is that the area is growing faster than they can build and the infrastructure isn't built for that. There are areas (like the I-85/I-385/woodruff rd area and surrounding downtown areas) that get super congested during peak traffic hours where a normally 10 minute drive can take 30-45 minutes. They are working on it though as they added extra lanes and recently had a town meeting to discuss more changes to help with the traffic flow. I moved here originally in 2014, bounced around some more then moved back in 2018 and the city has changed tremendously in just that short amount of time, and has changed even more since then.

You are correct! I think that the influx of people and also just the amount of people that moved here during the Covid years has been more than anticipated! It's been interesting to feel the last two years or so in the real estate market and what's been happening as more people move here. I still love it, and think it's an awesome place. Just sometimes have to learn different ways of getting places other than the main roads. =)

Greenville does have a busline which I used to get to Greenville Technical college and back home. The city was considering cutting its budget entirely last year to save money, but it is definitely vital to workers and college students. The Automotive Industry may be great for job growth here, with BMW and Michelin, but I think it also has diminished the cities interests in public Transportation to keep the Auto Industry happy. And that's irresponsible to the environment and lower income communities. Adding traffic lanes is not going to break up congestion. An effective bus service would. So if you build a lane. Make it for rapid transit of buses.

So is spring full of pollen the whole time and does not clear up? Is the fall, winter and spring sticky and humid also? How does it compare to say Orlando? Thanks
@aubree_lewis

So, the pollen is pretty intense in the spring time. But it gets ten times better after it rains unti lit builds up again. Not really unbearable though! The summer gets pretty hot, but again, maybe one week of "holy cow, stay inside" days. Then the fall is my favorite. Beautiful colors and 60-70 degrees! The winter is super mild, but we will get snow one or two times. It will be gone in a day or two! =)

Coming to Greenville from the Boston area proved to me more that the public can get irrational with their judgment & can make a slum place sound like a utopia ! Have lived in Greenville for a year and just decided that I will not judge on others judgment and I have to see for myself in the future. I moved to Des Moines, Ia after 1 year in Greenville. Let me tell ya, BMW factory, Michelin & other factories don’t seem that they feel privileged to be in Greenville, in fact Greenville should feel privileged & proud to have those factories. The close outskirts of the city are run down and poorly maintained (traffic lights, dangerous intersections, roadways & houses). It is a very small town & lacks in character and food scene (in fact it was never voted as a foodie town), every business closes early. The city is still at 50% of being fully developed & neo urban. I noticed a lot of toxic entitled teenage population the way they behave, communicate & drive. Toxic baby boomer generation of veterans who talk excessively about their experience in wars (think Lindsay Graham). A lot of Drunk drivers and silly needless accidents in a not so populated town. Housing market is needlessly expensive for what that city has to offer (less convenience and quality of life). Des Moines on the other hand got quality Scandinavian setting, well built roadways, open spaces, well built apartments with well finished Scandinavian interior yet very affordable. The food scene here is impressive for a small midwestern town with a lot of ethnic foods, Pizza and burgers on a level of NYC ! A healthy diverse population as well with socially engaged population . whereas in Greenville it reminded me a little of Minnesota but just because of the sunshine it feels friendly. The population in Greenville seem to have a low iQ compared to the one in Des Moines. I also noticed that a lot of businesses here are opportunistic, I mean because that city had been forgotten & not on the spotlight and with the population influx lately they seem to take it as an opportunity to scam and overcharge, sometimes with an attitude that you don’t expect in a southern hospitality setting ! Think of Greenville as a deserted abandoned lot that was rebuilt fast without a plan as an emergency shelter for domestic migration running away from Covid-19 and crime ridden big cities. I love to go out and see people well dressed and this is sea Moines for me, the Greenville, SC dress code is kinda preppey at best and not so diverse and appealing. In fact Memphis, TN got much better dressed population compared to Greenville. Greenville still has a southern touch and with its accent which makes you feel you are in the 60’s ! If you want to move to the Carolina’s consider That segment from Greensboro, NC to Raleigh Durham which feels modern & will make you feel like home coming from the north east.

Where exactly does this avalanche of people work? No infrastructure trains to move people around. There is really no where to go. There is an interesting bus system but make no mistake the people in these new homes and Starbucks crowd are never on the bus and never will be, plus it does not run on Sunday. Apartments and new homes everywhere. Poorly designed with cheap material and extremely serious flaws. Some seem constructed with wood from popsicle sticks or toothpicks. Front doors of each or some separate homes designed and constructed so they actually are side by side. No privacy! Also, some with side-by-side backyards. No privacy, again. No fun. Hard to sell when you move.

Greenville has many different industries, and half the people who I help these days work from home and like the ease of getting to major airports without having to live super close to them. Also, as far as what is being built and the quality, I would have to agree that not all builders are created equal and its important to do your research. Thanks for your opinion.

Considering retiring to South Carolina , Greenville peaked our interest. We currently live in Queens NY. Need to get out of the city....too many people and traffic. Need to have access to health care when we get old and need good vet care for our cats too. Looking to rent a 2 bedroom apartment to start. What is the averge rent there?

Hey Doreen! Happy to answer anymore questions you may have. There are a few vets in the area that are great as well! I think the average rent really depends on what you are looking or where you are looking. I think for a 2 bed apartment you will be looking at $1,100+. But a lot has to do with location for sure!

What can a single person alone do here that doesn't involve drinking.. again the key word is ALONE. On the west coast, as a health conscious single introvert - I had options. Here, I need friends or a date or to drink.

I was born in NYC but grew in Upstate SC .I have lived here since 1974 .Native Southerners tend to associate with family and friends from high school .One of the biggest problems though are newcomers who come here and they start out being open to making friends but then stop after making a couple of friends .Then they sometimes become as bad as natives about making more friends .Big mistake because when one of those small handful of friends moves on you're back to square one .I have a social group I formed online and our meetings are decent sized but I have a hard time getting together with them outside of regular meetings .I play golf and I have to beg people to play .Logically our group which is made up almost entirely of newcomers seems like it should be bigger given that there are so many in the area with no family and they aren't as churchgoing as locals (church is a big way to socialize with locals ) .Newcomers in my experience will profess to have very little social life when they come here but when I contact them to come to meetings they many times hem and haw about being busy or I get this ho hum " I can take it or leave it " attitude and this after complaining how hard it is to meet people in the Upstate .So newcomers share some of the blame as for why it's hard to meet people in the area.

Greenville is experiencing rampant sprawl and overdevelopment that this small town and rural infrastructure cannot support. It is rapidly changing, and its charm is quickly disappearing. You can expect runaway inflationary prices for housing, increasing congestion, rising taxes, and increasing crime. Greenville is full. Don't move to Greenville!
@aubree_lewis
@aubree_lewis 2 жыл бұрын
That is one way of looking at it, and your opinion. However, I do believe that the infrastructure of the area is doing well to keep up! The upstate has the largest fly-over highway system in the state, the housing prices are still 30% less than the national average, and taxes to rise with inflation unfortunately.

@@aubree_lewis Is the “inflation” comment a political opinion reference? In every county in SC the Assessors’ Offices determines property taxes by Market Value which is irrelevant from inflation. We saw huge price increases in property values in Florida beginning in Q2 of 2020 before we “supposedly” had any inflation. (I’m sure those Florida properties were reassessed after transfers at that time). And lastly, the millage would be determined by the General Assembly and respective County and City Councils, NOT the FED. I’m sorry, I think the “inflation” excuse is completely inaccurate and just tired.

@@aubree_lewis Supply and demand. Markets. The price is what’s someone is willing to pay for it… That’s not “inflationary”, it’s called Capitalism. May have been a general comment or observation by yourself and @Roland Pittman, just a foolish one. Sorry, not sorry. Especially, since you’re the influencer and content-maker here.

I’m sure you coouuuld make the connection between the two like if Inflation is A, which leads to B, and B to C, and so forth all the way to Property Taxes as Z. So yeah, that, and I am only one degree from Kevin Bacon.

I have lived in Greenville SC. for 7 years from the West Coast. I have also lived in The Caribbean as well as The North. If you have light skin you will have a better chance to enjoy Greenville. If you examine the numbers, Afro. Americans are actually slowly moving out of the state of SC. Not so many appear to be moving in. This is the first school system where my kids were called N****RS by some of their white schoolmates. I am dark and i often get several stares when I frequent eateries that cater to mostly white customers on the outskirts of town or even in some suburbs. Most people that I have encountered will greet you but prefer that you keep moving. The atmosphere is peaceful in nature but socially tense. If you try to strike up a conversation with a stranger in your space you will most likely appear strange if they dont know you and maybe even creepy. If you dare differ in opinion from the views of many locals they will be nice but mark you and keep their distance. Be sure to bring your own friends with you. Most food in Greenville (but Charleston has great food) is truly mediocre to poor in the eyes of most people I meet who come here from other places. The school system seems pretty good and the facilities are nice. Conversations about race and culture might very well be perceived as racist. (which is perceived as a problem from the past that we already dealt with so why bring it up because it might make someone feel uncomfortable). Most people attend church but you would be hard pressed to find someone who would like to have a good conversation about the bible with you if you are not a family member. Parks are great and usually not crowded or frequented by the homeless. Roads are nice. Many of the women are a tease (mildly flirty),but for the most part they expect most men to stay in their own lane (and not respond to it) as most of the women are married or otherwise in a committed relationship. Cops are cooler than anywhere I have lived and deserve honorable mention. Service is often poor from small businesses (home repair etc.). Lots of support for seniors , Low cost of living. If you are into fashion you will stand out (like you dress funny).
