I from Hawaii, born and raised. Hawaii has it's perks and it's nice for a slow and easy living...however I got bored with it and I wanted to leave but no mater how hard I tried, I always seem to find my way back home...I joined the Army to get away from Hawaii...guess where my first duty station was...Hawaii, f*ck me, right?

I don't think many who move here realize just how expensive it is to live/survive in Hawaii. Come here with lots of cash in the bank or the willingness to work 3 jobs. Sometimes both depending on the lifestyle you hope to live. You learn to do without many things you once thought were important. As long as you have a car, surfboards and a roof over your head, all is good. Oh wait, don't surf. Surfing sucks. Beware, there is a shortage of affordable rentals. The good ones never see craigslist. Nice video....

My mom was adopted when she was one, and her family moved her to Honolulu right after. She lived there until she was sixteen. It makes me really sad that it's so commercialized and touristy. Mom told me that even in the 60's, the culture was fading. Like the American Indians/Native Americans (depending on what you call the native mainlanders), they were kind of kicked out. Why did the Europeans do that? I'm not blaming all of you. But they took away so many people's homes to brag about how much land they owned. Sometimes I'm embarrassed by my own species. Is that wrong?

The thing that bothers me the most is the about people like this, who move to Hawaii. Military families included is the fact that no one bothers to talk about the Hawaiians. Our history and culture are being destroyed and looked over. These people from the mainland, Asia and the world love to talk about aloha. Thinking that watching Lilo and Stitch means they know the meaning. People want to live in 'paradise' so they move to a chain of islands with limited land. The true Hawaiians and natives of the land have always been pushed to the sidelines, with less access to better school. The Hawaiians have no way to own a home on their own lands because foreigners with more money or opportunities drive up the cost of living. Then once they get a Hawaii ID, they go on to talk about being 'kama'aina' a Hawaiian word meaning children of the land when they have no right to this title. They use this to get discounts at stores that offer a kama'aina discount. I am not oppose to foreigners who respect Hawaiian history and culture, who give back to Hawaii. I respect the tourist who come and visit, who explore and enjoy. I guess my point is that not enough people know Hawaiian history and how Hawaiians are still being affected today.

@johnNYgoesLA7 жыл бұрын
@disorderlyteen I like Hawaiians like you! I agree. However I believe many hawaiians dont know enough about their own culture and language. For example why is it so common to misspronounce hawaiian words? Like Māʻili. Why do ppl prounouce it like Miley? I can't say it right cos my friends will look at me like I have no right to speak hawaiian cos I am haole.
@disorderlyteen7 жыл бұрын
Language evolves, much like how hello turned into hi, brother into bro. Most people who grow up in Hawaii and attend public school are required to learn state history. They grow up learning about how a few rich westerners gather together and imprisoned the last Queen of Hawaii. How the monarchy was slowly stripped of its power. How these westerners passed voting laws that prevented most native Hawaiians from even being able to vote for their own leaders. It also doesnt help that westerners brought sickness that wiped out more than half of the Hawaiian people. I am not saying that its okay to look at you funny because you choose to say Hawaiian words correctly, I personally appreciate it. It shows that you took the time to learn.
@johnNYgoesLA7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. When I said culture I meant stuff like polynesian navagation, growing crops the old way, eating traditional foods etc. I know the story of Queen Lili... Such a dark chapter. Honestly it makes me sad. I found a T-Shirt that I bought the first time I was on the islands... I never had a close look at it until recently when I realized that it says HAWAII - est 1959... Isn't that offensive? I whish Hawaii was a sovereign nation again, but I also realize the benefits that come with being part of the USA.

I agree. Grew up in Maui. Best times of my early life. My parents moved back to Cali and I had to choose at 19 what I would do. I didn't have family or connections in a hotel or whatever and didn't see prospering in a plate lunch place I was working and selling pot was just for fun. LOL. Many moons passed and now I have a contracting/construction business and hope to save up for a while and will try to go back and retire in Hawaii one day. Hawaii is the best. I didn't realize what it meant to be Filipino till I moved there. Hawaii showed me how to respect family, friends, land, and how to fight. Made most of who I am today.

I believe this was a great video for her perspective. I don't think she was trying to fight our battle for Hawaiian rights for this video. It isn't just transplants that make traffic difficult. We have to take some responsibility for allowing our land to be bought up by outsiders, allowing our aina to be overdeveloped, etc.. We can't continue to blame "others". Having Hawaiian blood and most of my ohana still lives on island and half have never left.. I say this was a fair assessment of Da Bus and traffic not to mention the cost. Good and fair video.

My girlfriend and I just came back from shooting in Hawaiʻi and we loved that they respect the environment so much, like no plastic bags, lots of electric cars, clean beaches, fines for smoking etc. And we actually took the bus pretty often but we thought it was okay! It took us to the most beautiful places in Hawaiʻi Kai and up to Kailua, and a friend took us to the North Shore in his car :) It just takes ages!! You should try the bus on Maui, the system only covers a small part of the island and the stops are miles apart (and again, super slow). Still Hawaiʻi is one of our favourite places :)

I remember being in Hawai'i 30 years ago, visiting friends who are native Hawaiians, and sitting on an inter-island flight with a married couple who would have been my parents' age. We spent the entire flight from the Big Island to Kauai'i discussing the pros and cons of living in Hawai'i after they had retired from Michigan (I was trying to decide if I would pick up my career and relocate to The Islands for the lifestyle and proximity to friends). The end of the discussion was that my flight companions had decided to move back to the Mainland, the final determining factor was that in order to go anywhere it was necessary for them to get on an airplane! I have since continued to return to The Islands many times, and one thing that has not changed has been the sheer number of Hawaiian residents who still get on a plane with you on O'ahu with their bags of groceries - and if you take the time to ask, you find it's a regular trip to buy food items, clothing, etc., you still cannot buy on Kauai'i, Molokai'i, and especially Lanai'i. I still visit my friends regularly, even though it's a 10 to 12 hour flight, but that conversation 30 years ago put an end to my plans of retiring to The Islands.

At 7:00 in this video it shows MAKAPU'U beach on Oahu. I spent 3 hours body boarding in 84 degree water there. Awesome time... until I walked back up the trail to the parking lot. Two police cars next to my rental car. My car had been broken into and all my belongings had been stolen. The police said that rental cars are targeted by local thieves due to the fact that tourists almost always leave something worth stealing in them especially at beaches. Took my statement of what was stolen and I never saw my things again! If you think locking your car is going to protect your goods...think again! Take it from me, don't leave valuables in your car... even if you hide them.

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I thought there were roadside fruit markets that were less expensive than the stores. Have you found these, or are they only in certain areas/islands?

We had a great bus system but after the state had a massive budget cut, one of the first things to go were some of the best bus routes. We had 2 circle-island buses that tourists loved. It went from town to North Shore. And things are taking longer because of our ridiculous traffic.

I was born and raised in waimanalo :) as a Hawaiian, I completely agree with everything you're saying. I love my homeland and culture, but it is very expensive to live here. My family and I are 75% Hawaiian, my father is pure Hawaiian and my mom is half and even with all the Kama'aina discounts, it's still very expensive here. And the bus system is horrible lol I didn't realize how bad it was until I traveled and the buses in the mainland are almost ALWAYS on time and here in Hawaii, you have to plan at least half an hour to an hour ahead in case your bus is late. My parents raised us with us outside all the time. Beautiful weather, always active and always at the beach. My parents struggled financially but we were always abundant in happiness. I think moving to Hawaii and raising a family is a great experience but please consider the financial part. xoxo :)
@gorathiemann8 жыл бұрын
+Abbie Kaleo That is so wonderful :) I love Waimanalo it is so magnificent. I totaly agree that the financial part is a huge thing. I just think that in Hawaii you are happpier with less :) It is so beautiful and diverse. So cool that you are 75% Hawaiian :) Have an amazing day :) ALOHA

+Tropicalinii I'm so ready to go home! I just miss Germany so much and I don't like the people here. They all just eat so, so much meat and they have a completely wrong way of thinking. I mean it's kinda their choice how and what they think but if millions of animals have to die because of it then it's not. And every time I try to talk to them about it they're just pigheaded. I hope you're having a good time in Mexico! Have a nice day too!! :)
@gorathiemann8 жыл бұрын
i know what you mean !!! but they have to change one day ! have a nice day:) If you ever gonna come to hawaii let me know:)
@ettlena8 жыл бұрын
+Tropicalinii I will :) It will probably take at least 3 more years though.
@ettlena8 жыл бұрын
+Tropicalinii and yes, you're right. My environmental science teacher once said that whenever there won't be any more water for the US, they will just take it from other countries and it doesn't matter to him how many people die as long as he gets water. It's so horrible and I wish I could do something about it but nobody listens to me. :(

Heres some cons from a local....Note....hawaii has.....A TON of TRAFFIC (2ND worst in the nation), A TON of Homeless people (there are actually communities of tents), a TON of immigrants (1/2 the population are FOB Chinese and/ or Filipino), A TON of tourist everywhere, Extremely high cost of living, WEAK ass State Government, Lots of Drug use (one of the worst ice use in the nation), shipping items to Hawaii normally cost and arm and a leg, one of the worst Road conditions), EXTREMELY over populated (on the island of oahu), A LOT of violent crimes lately, And over all poor grade school education ratings (one of the worst in the nation). Oh and did I mention a TON OF TRAFFIC!! Not saying everything is bad in Hawaii....those are just a few things to think about before moving or visiting here. I'm born and raised on the island of Oahu, but Hawaii has changed negatively, especially the last 10-15 years.

Depends on where you live though, tropica. It's actually a bit cheaper to live on the Big Island as compared to California, the groceries may cost more, but the electricity and water bills cost way less.

People not from Hawaii usually have an idealized view of what it's like to live in Hawaii. I think from watching American television shows like Magnum PI (depending how old you are) to Hawaii 5-0. To various films about the surfing culture. Which almost never shows you the bad (e.g. homelessness, high cost of living...). People either go for the water sports if young or to retire there if they can afford the mega-mansions on beach. What could be better than, for retirees (with deep pockets), to wake up in their dream home along one of the many beautiful beaches. Or sit watching the gorgeous sunsets, palm trees swaying, tiki torches burning...waking up to the sound of the surf...blue waters, blue skies (summer). Vs. living in the suburbs or in an urban area facing condos and corporate buildings. But there is also the "Aloha Spirit". Most people getting along well. Willing to help each other. Especially if you're a person of colour. Very little racism (esp for Asians...what little there is might be directed at white people by the less fortunate...usually homeless people..always shouting to white people about how they took their land). But most every one gets along well. More so than in other states or provinces (Canada). Interesting there are no KZbin videos made by professionals who moved to Hawaii (e.g. doctors, lawyers....). People already established financially/job. College educated.
