One notable pro that you guys missed was the history that NOVA, DC and MD have to offer. From Washingtons Mt. Vernon and the GW Parkway to all of DCs monuments and memorials. Smithsonian Institution’s museums and the ability to sit in on a session of Congress. Old Town Alexandria and Arlington National Cemetary. National Harbor and the fishing communities on the Chesapeake Bay. And lets not forget the fresh seafood wherever you go.

NOVA is the bomb if have a relatively high paying job or two incomes. There really aren't any "bad" places to live in NOVA. Fairfax County, Loudon County and Prince William County all have nice options. Even cities are nice Alexandria, Falls Church, Arlington, etc. The worst part about NOVA I remember was the insane traffic! It took me 1.25 minutes to commute 15 miles to work.

Very helpful video . Moving from Texas and we definitely feel the housing cost as we are leaving a beautiful home for one that’s much older and on a much smaller lot. We agree these sacrifices will at least give our children several amenities that they wouldn’t have here (walking to a park, a lake , boating and great school). It’s hard to give up something beautiful but sometimes it’s give or take . Also my husband will be taking a bus so his truck is now almost useless 😬😬. We have joked recently that we are paying for your beautiful trees and green grass as our area was hit hard with a drought this year.

You will be further down to MD if you move to Fairfax, Oakton, Reston, or Ashburn. What is your comfortable budget so I can guide you further?

Hi Elizabeth, generally speaking, anywhere in N.VA is safe. Stay if you can in Fairfax/Arlington/Loudoun county. Hope this helps!
@drj46083 жыл бұрын
I've lived in the DMV (DC/MD/VA) area since '89 and was your shoes in 2010 (recent college grad looking for affordable housing). I would start by looking for rentals along the metro system or the VRE when starting out. Having access to public transit is a plus if you are looking to buy and sell later. And if you are a recent grad, you will definitely sell later. You don't have to be in Virginia, but can also venture out to MD. General rule is that MD/VA that borders east DC tends to be less safe when compared to west.

You should try Alexandria around Duke Street area. It's close to beautiful Old Town Alexandria and you can take the metro into DC. If you prefer a low key family, pet friendly and walkable nature area then Herndon or Reston is good. I live in Herndon and take the metro to McLean where I work. It's about a 45 to 50 mins to DC on the silver line.

Tysons Corner is only 3 or 4 stops from Reston or Herndon on the silver line metro and both cities are a little cheaper than Arlington. I work in McLean, one stop after Tysons Corner and it takes 15 mins by train and 20 mins if I drive. Herndon is your best choice. You can get an apt for $1300 upwards depending on location but that's 1 bedroom.

I’ve lived in NOVA since 1995. I have live in DC as well as MD. I’m from NY originally. NOVA is really nice if you can afford it. Weather is great considering it’s a southern state. September to November is the best fall weather on the East Coast. Proximity to DC is overrated in my opinion. It encourages higher rents and mortgages. Very diverse and many things to do. Federal Government is a huge employer but Amazon is trying to change that lol. I’m very qualified to answer any questions about this region including MD and DC. Enjoy great video.
