Cons of ophthalmology 1. Huge investment to setup own clinic and basic instruments too. Phaco machine starts at 25 Lakhs. 2. Job market sucks. 3. Low paying salaries start at as less as 70k. Even retina and cornea specialist are being offered as low as 1 to 1.5 lakh per month. 4. Just doing MS or DNB won't help, you got to learn further in fellowship, observership, FAICO,FICO,FRCOphth. 5. Patient flow for starters is very low as compared to other surgeons. 6. Cataract schemes offering free surgery to all lower the business potential in private practise. 7. Competition from optical shops and lenskart, so practically nil side income from specs
